A New Guide to Sex in the 21st Century - Louise Perry

The bestselling feminist book, now adapted for a young adult audienceBefore the 1960s, sex before marriage was frowned upon and pornography was difficult to get hold of. We are now much freer to do what we like – there has been a ‘sexual revolution’. This must be a good thing, right?Wrong, argues Louise Perry. These changes have had many negative consequences, especially for girls and women. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-ups and freely available porn are a tiny minority of rich and powerful men. Women have been forced to adapt to these changes in ways that often harm them. Louise Perry carefully guides readers through the difficulties of sex in the 21st century. Her advice will be invaluable to all young women and men who may be feeling lost in a world where ‘doing it’ can sometimes seem dangerous or confusing.

Parenting in the Age of Sexposure approaches the thorny issue of sex and sexuality in the lives of children, at a time when the media and the Internet bombard kids with countless sexualizing, explicit messages ‘Thin is good’; ‘Having sex is “in”; ‘Sex has nothing to do with commitment’. How do parents bring up children when the media overwhelmingly portrays girls and women as sexual objects, encourages boys to form superficial relationships and reinforces gender biases? How do they secure their kids’ emotional wellbeing, while admitting that sexuality is an integral part of the human experience? Equally, how do they deal with the ugly realities of sexual violence and abuse and safeguard their children’s interests? Parenting in the Age of Sexposure attempts to address these questions and offer ideas for conscious parenting.

Women at Work in World Wars I and II - Paul Chrystal

This book is about women in World Wars I & II - women working in factories and on farms, or toiling perilously in field stations just behind the front lines, in inhospitable hospitals and convalescent homes. It is, therefore, about the prodigious contribution women made to the war efforts from 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, standing in for the men who had left their places of work for the various theatres of war from Greece and Italy to Belgium, from Mesopotamia to France. Their tasks were many and various: keeping the troops supplied with shells, bullets and explosives, keeping the nation from starving to death, keeping hundreds of thousands of wounded troops alive so that they might fight another day. The book is, in short, the uplifting but sometimes tragic story of the many women who stepped up to work in the factories, hospitals, field stations, in transport and in civil defence, on the farms and shipyards, or signed up to the various military and civil services during the two world wars of the 20th century, ‘wars to end all wars…’.The book is different because it deals with women’s labour in both world wars and in all occupations, it covers the discrimination ... Formative assessment, one of the key techniques explored within this book, has explicit links with reducing anxiety: raising childrenÂ’s belief in their ability to achieve and giving them clear frameworks of learning intentions and success criteria as well as in-the-moment feedback so that they are reassured and able to voice any worries while they are working.Written in a practical and accessible manner, the authors unpack the psychology behind issues related to studentsÂ’ mental health and provide illustrative, relatable anecdotes and helpful strategies to support a positive, anxiety-free learning environment. The book is divided into four distinct sections:Why is everyone so anxious and what can we do about it?Understanding and dealing with extreme behaviourSupporting the learning to reduce anxietyCreating a containing and compassionate schoolThis is a must read for anyone working in a primary school. Asian and Hispanic Immigrant Women in the Work Force - Fung-Yea Huang

Data from the Current Population Survey were used in a unique analysis of migration and economic adaptation in a nationally representative sample of Asian and Hispanic immigrant women. The study describes migration patterns and compares the labor market adaptation experiences of women who migrated with their families and women who migrated independently. The book also examines the systematic differences in migration patterns by country of origin and how these differences relate to labor market performance The findings highlight the considerable impact of immigration policy on the economic adaptation of immigration women. Wives who migrated before their husbands were more likely to be in the labor force, especially when compared to wives migrating after their husbands. In contrast, wives who migrated with their husbands were not likely to participate in the labor force. Interestingly, Asian immigrant wives, were more likely to migrate while married than were Hispanic immigrant wives. Asian wives who migrated after their husbands, earned substantially lower wages than their respective ethnic counterparts (Ph.D. Dissertation, Cornell University, 1995; revised with new preface and index)

In Dialogue with the Other Voice in Sixteenth–ce – Literary and Social Contexts for Women`s Writing - Julie D. Campbell, Maria Galli Stampino

This excellent collection of essays and texts surveys the culture and intellectual context of early modern Italy in order to render more intelligible the writing of Italian women. The role of women in society and the persistent misogyny even of the most pro-woman texts are explored in the essays, and the recent critical debates are examined. The translations make available in English a selection of male-authored texts which directly or indirectly elicited the spirited responses of women, for which the volume is aptly entitled “In Dialogue.” A valuable classroom resource, the volume is an important addition to The Other Voice: Toronto series. —Elissa WeaverProfessor of Italian, Emerita, University of Chicago

Pain and Prejudice: A call to arms for women and their bodies - Gabrielle Jackson

An incredibly important and powerful look at how our culture treats the pain and suffering of women in medical and social contexts. A polemic on the state of women's health and healthcare. One in ten women worldwide have endometriosis, yet it is funded at 5% of the rate of diabetes; women are half as likely to be treated for a heart attack as men and twice as likely to die six months after discharge; over half of women who are eventually diagnosed with an autoimmune disease will be told they are hypochondriacs or have a mental illness. These are just a few of the shocking statistics explored in this book. Fourteen years after being diagnosed with endometriosis, Gabrielle Jackson couldn't believe how little had changed in the treatment and knowledge of the disease. In 2015, her personal story kick-started a worldwide investigation into the disease by the Guardian; thousands of women got in touch to tell their own stories and many more read and shared the material. What began as one issue led Jackson to explore how women - historically and through to the present day - are under-served by the systems that should keep them happy, healthy and informed ...
