Eager to Learn - National Research Council, Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Committee on Early Childhood Pedagogy

Clearly babies come into the world remarkably receptive to its wonders. Their alertness to sights, sounds, and even abstract concepts makes them inquisitive explorers—and learners—every waking minute. Well before formal schooling begins, children's early experiences lay the foundations for their later social behavior, emotional regulation, and literacy. Yet, for a variety of reasons, far too little attention is given to the quality of these crucial years. Outmoded theories, outdated facts, and undersized budgets all play a part in the uneven quality of early childhood programs throughout our country. What will it take to provide better early education and care for our children between the ages of two and five? Eager to Learn explores this crucial question, synthesizing the newest research findings on how young children learn and the impact of early learning. Key discoveries in how young children learn are reviewed in language accessible to parents as well as educators: findings about the interplay of biology and environment, variations in learning among individuals and children from different social and economic groups, and the importance of health, safety, nutrition and interpersonal warmth to early learning. Perhaps most significant, the book documents how very early in life learning really begins. Valuable conclusions and recommendations are presented in the areas of the teacher-child relationship, the organization and content of curriculum, meeting the needs of those children most at risk of school failure, teacher preparation, assessment of teaching and learning, and more. The book discusses:Evidence for competing theories, models, and approaches in the field and a hard look at some day-to-day practices and activities generally used in preschool. The role of the teacher, the importance of peer interactions, and other relationships in the child's life. Learning needs of minority children, children with disabilities, and other special groups. Approaches to assessing young children's learning for the purposes of policy decisions, diagnosis of educational difficulties, and instructional planning. Preparation and continuing development of teachers. Eager to Learn presents a comprehensive, coherent picture of early childhood learning, along with a clear path toward improving this important stage of life for all children. Early Childhood Development: A Multicultural Perspective - Jeffrey Trawick-Smith

Early Childhood Development: A Multicultural Perspective, 6/e addresses both typical and atypical child development from birth through age eight. This text highlights the diversity of child development, preparing professionals to meet the unique needs of children from a wide variety of backgrounds. From reviews of Early Childhood Development: A Multicultural Perspective: “I believe that overall the textbook is unique in its multicultural approach. It is also very reader friendly and contains the information that is essential to understanding the development of children. . . . [T]his text is one of the few that truly does focus on the early development years. Additionally, it is one of the only [texts] that has the multicultural emphasis.” —Keri Maxwell, West Virginia University “I use the text because it is the only one that I have found with a true multicultural focus throughout, not just a “multicultural” chapter at the end of the book. . . . [The W]riting is excellent, especially helpful are the examples and vignettes. . . . [The book] gives multiple examples of how content is applied; gives a review of important points; and gives application ideas at the end of each chapter. [A] strength [of Chapter 18] is looking at family issues (poverty, oppression, etc.) and going through the different age ranges covered in this book. That helped to integrate that knowledge about families and apply it across ages.” —Sandra Newcomb, University of Maryland, College Park “Excellent text. . . . [T]he author has done an outstanding job of presenting key concepts in a readable, understandable, and relational way. Excellent Research into Practice [feature].” –Marilee Cosgrove, California State University, Fullerton

Wars and Soldiers in the Early Reign of Louis XIV Volume 8 - Bruno Mugnai

Whatever name the historians gave to the conflicts fought by Sweden and Denmark-Norway, and despite all of the battles, sieges, winter campaigns, and guerrillas, in a wider perspective these events have been often considered a theater of war on the periphery. The struggle for predominance in Europe was not formed up in some hyperborean outlying land, but down in Flanders, Rhineland and Mediterranean. However, even in Northern European countries, the war set its mark on the masses, involving economy, domestic policy and diplomacy throughout the conflicts. After the devastating war against Poland, and Russia, and later The German Empire, Brandenburg and the Netherlands, Sweden was a major Louis XIVÂ’s ally. Both France and Sweden were interested in reducing the Dutch leading roll as a seafaring, commerce nation. Denmark-Norway faced this scenario always in the opposite side. The Swedish army was still regarded as a role model by the contemporaries, and even after the reforms introduced by Gustavus Adolphus, Swedish generals did not cease to develop new military theories, while the state provided itself with an administrative structure capable of supporting the war effort. No less important was the political and military trajectory of Denmark, the nation that more than any other in these years was on the front line against the Lion of the North. The history, organisation, equipment, uniforms and ensigns of the two armies are brought together in a single volume, together with an appendix dealing with the Duchy of Courland.

Early Childhood Quality Rating Scale – Emergent Curriculum (ECQRS–EC) - Denise Kingston, Iram Siraj, Brenda Taggart, Kathy Sylva

The Early Childhood Quality Rating Scale – Emergent Curriculum (ECQRS–EC) is designed to measure the quality of support for literacy, mathematics, and science in pre-school settings.Although different curricular frameworks are used around the world, there is increasing agreement that emerging academic skills should be supported by a playful pedagogy. The ECQRS–EC substantially updates the ECERS–E, which was the first observational scale to focus directly on the development of emergent academic skills. This evidence-based tool also includes a subscale dedicated to diversity and inclusion to help educators support gender and cultural differences in children aged 3–6 years old who are developing at different rates. This revised quality rating scale recognises the important role of the adult in providing children with high-quality interactions and can be used for research, teacher self-evaluation, and programme improvement, audit and regulation.

Fiorella & Mayer's Generative Learning in Action - Enser Mark, Zoe Enser

Generative Learning in Action helps to answer the question: which activities can students carry out to create meaningful learning? It does this by considering how we, as teachers, can implement the eight strategies for generative learning set out in the work of Fiorella and Mayer in their seminal 2015 work Learning as a Generative Activity: Eight Learning Strategies that Promote Learning. At a time when a great deal of attention has been paid to the teaching and learning from the perspective of effective instruction, Generative Learning looks at the flip side of coin and considers what is happening in the minds of the learner. This book takes a teachers-eye view of a range of theories of learning and keeps their application to the classroom firmly in mind through the use of case studies and reference to day to day practice. Generative Learning in Action also discusses the key considerations and potential limitations of each of the strategies, as well as how you could implement these in your own practice and more widely across a school. The authors bring a wealth of experience to this topic. Zoe Enser was a classroom English teacher for over 20 years as well as head of department and school leader in charge of improving teaching and learning. She is now lead specialist advisor for Kent with The Education People. Mark Enser has been a geography teacher for the best part of two decades as well as a head of department and research lead. He is the author of Making Every Geography Lesson Count and Teach Like Nobody''s Watching as well as a TES columnist.

The Art of Terrestrial Diagrams in Early China - Michelle H. Wang

A study of early Chinese maps using interdisciplinary methods. This is the first English-language monograph on the early history of maps in China, centering on those found in three tombs that date from the fourth to the second century BCE and constitute the entire known corpus of early Chinese maps (ditu). More than a millennium separates them from the next available map in the early twelfth century CE. Unlike extant studies that draw heavily from the history of cartography, this book offers an alternative perspective by mobilizing methods from art history, archaeology, material culture, religion, and philosophy. It examines the diversity of forms and functions in early Chinese ditu to argue that these pictures did not simply represent natural topography and built environments, but rather made and remade worlds for the living and the dead. Wang explores the multifaceted and multifunctional diagrammatic tradition of rendering space in early China.

Deep Reinforcement Learning in Action - Alexander Zai, Brandon Brown

Humans learn best from feedback—we are encouraged to take actions that lead to positive results while deterred by decisions with negative consequences. This reinforcement process can be applied to computer programs allowing them to solve more complex problems that classical programming cannot. Deep Reinforcement Learning in Action teaches you the fundamental concepts and terminology of deep reinforcement learning, along with the practical skills and techniques you’ll need to implement it into your own projects. Key features • Structuring problems as Markov Decision Processes • Popular algorithms such Deep Q-Networks, Policy Gradient method and Evolutionary Algorithms and the intuitions that drive them • Applying reinforcement learning algorithms to real-world problems Audience You’ll need intermediate Python skills and a basic understanding of deep learning. About the technology Deep reinforcement learning is a form of machine learning in which AI agents learn optimal behavior from their own raw sensory input. The system perceives the environment, interprets the results of its past decisions, and uses this information to optimize its behavior for maximum long-term return. Deep reinforcement learning famously contributed to the success of AlphaGo but that’s not all it can do! Alexander Zai is a Machine Learning Engineer at Amazon AI working on MXNet that powers a suite of AWS machine learning products. Brandon Brown is a Machine Learning and Data Analysis blogger at outlace.com committed to providing clear teaching on difficult topics for newcomers.

Forbidden Desire in Early Modern Europe - Sir Noel Malcolm

A landmark study of the history of male-male sex in early modern Europe, including the European colonies and the Ottoman world.Until quite recently, the history of male-male sexual relations was a taboo topic. But when historians eventually explored the archives of Florence, Venice and elsewhere, they brought to light an extraordinary world of early modern sexual activity, extending from city streets and gardens to taverns, monasteries and Mediterranean galleys. Typically, the sodomites (as they were called) were adult men seeking sex with teenage boys. This was something intriguingly different from modern homosexuality: the boys ceased to be desired when they became fully masculine. And the desire for them was seen as natural; no special sexual orientation was assumed. The rich evidence from Southern Europe in the Renaissance period was not matched in the Northern lands; historians struggled to apply this new knowledge to countries such as England or its North American colonies. And when good Northern evidence did appear, from after 1700, it presented a very different picture. So the theory was formed - and it has dominated most standard accounts until now - that the ''emergence of modern homosexuality'' happened suddenly, but inexplicably, at the beginning of the eighteenth century.Noel Malcolm''s masterly study solves this and many other problems, by doing something which no previous scholar has attempted: giving a truly pan-European account of the whole phenomenon of male-male sexual relations in the early modern period. It includes the Ottoman Empire, as well as the European colonies in the Americas and Asia; it describes the religious and legal norms, both Christian and Muslim; it discusses the literary representations in both Western Europe and the Ottoman world; and it presents a mass of individual human stories, from New England to North Africa, from Scandinavia to Peru. Original, critical, lucidly written and deeply researched, this work will change the way we think about the history of homosexuality in early modern Europe.

A New Guide to Sex in the 21st Century - Louise Perry

The bestselling feminist book, now adapted for a young adult audienceBefore the 1960s, sex before marriage was frowned upon and pornography was difficult to get hold of. We are now much freer to do what we like – there has been a ‘sexual revolution’. This must be a good thing, right?Wrong, argues Louise Perry. These changes have had many negative consequences, especially for girls and women. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-ups and freely available porn are a tiny minority of rich and powerful men. Women have been forced to adapt to these changes in ways that often harm them. Louise Perry carefully guides readers through the difficulties of sex in the 21st century. Her advice will be invaluable to all young women and men who may be feeling lost in a world where ‘doing it’ can sometimes seem dangerous or confusing.

Understanding Research in Early Education - Margaret M. Clark

In this newly revised edition of Understanding Research in Early Education, Margaret Clark demonstrates the continuing relevance of research in the homes of young children and in preschool units. Through rigorous yet understandable language, the text stresses the importance of research, acknowledging how easy it can be, amidst the change and flood of documents on early education and care, to overlook the insights to be gained from past research. The author draws on her own studies, and those of others, to illustrate how to avoid common pitfalls, ask the right questions to inform studentsÂ’ research projects, and critically apply findings in the classroom or nursery. The book is one of the few texts for students to bring research alive, analysing key research to consider its limitations and the extent to which results are relevant to policy and practice. Without requiring any prior expertise in research and research methodologies, the third edition will prove invaluable for undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in early yearsÂ’ education, and practitioners undertaking continuing professional development. New content includes: fully revised chapters, an updated reference list, and a new chapter discussing current research on baseline assessment.

This book supports students to:   - know why self-regulation matters - understand why self-regulation is increasingly evident in policy and curricular around the world - focus on social, emotional and behavioural aspects of self-regulation - explore the importance of relationships in self-regulation – between children and adults and between children themselves - effectively observe and document self-regularion

Language, Literacy and Communication in the Early Years - Carol Hayes

This book guides students and practitioners through the wealth of information on cognition and language development by breaking the area down into manageable chunks and drawing these together into a full understanding of the holistic nature of child development. Children with communication difficulties are at risk of poor outcomes educationally, socially and in employability. Whilst there may be a range of interventions which can help children, it is the practice of those working with them that is the key to success. Therefore a firm understanding of communication development and the ability to adapt teaching to support children''s individual needs are vital. The text offers a balanced approach to the theories and research into the development and acquisition of language and literacy in the early years. It examines how practice can be improved and the impact that language and literacy development has on learning outcomes. It also, importantly, addresses the particular pedagogy related to bilingual and multilingual learners. Carefully structured activities are provided and the text clearly relates theory to practice. Pedagogical features encourage a questioning, challenging and reflective approach, promoting critical thinking throughout.. *** Librarians: ebook available (Series: Early Years) [Subject: Early Childhood Education, Language, Communication]

Everyday Magic in Early Modern Europe - Kathryn A. Edwards

While pre-modern Europe is often seen as having an ''enchanted'' or ''magical'' worldview, the full implications of such labels remain inconsistently explored. Witchcraft, demonology, and debates over pious practices have provided the main avenues for treating those themes, but integrating them with other activities and ideas seen as forming an enchanted Europe has proven to be a much more difficult task. This collection offers one method of demystifying this world of everyday magic. Integrating case studies and more theoretical responses to the magical and preternatural, the authors here demonstrate that what we think of as extraordinary was often accepted as legitimate, if unusual, occurrences or practices. In their treatment of and attitudes towards spirit-assisted treasure-hunting, magical recipes, trials for sanctity, and visits by guardian angels, early modern Europeans showed more acceptance of and comfort with the extraordinary than modern scholars frequently acknowledge. Even witchcraft could be more pervasive and less threatening than many modern interpretations suggest. Magic was both mundane and mysterious in early modern Europe, and the witches who practiced it could in many ways be quite ordinary members of their communities. The vivid cases described in this volume should make the reader question how to distinguish the ordinary and extraordinary and the extent to which those terms need to be redefined for an early modern context. They should also make more immediate a world in which magic was an everyday occurrence.

Ausubel's Meaningful Learning in Action - Sarah Cottinghatt

American psychologist and psychiatrist David Ausubel is well known for his famous quote:"The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows. Ascertain this and teach him accordingly" (Ausubel, 1968, vi).But few know about the richness and importance of his assimilation theory of meaningful learning and retention, which holds many more instruction-altering insights. One of the main reasons why this theory is so important is because it focuses on the end goal teachers are after: teachers don''t want students to memorise distinct ideas; teachers want students to develop vast bodies of knowledge in the subjects they are taught. Ausubel explains that the only way to achieve this is through supporting students to learn meaningfully. This book explores the key elements of the theory and what it means to learn meaningfully. It then links the theory to highly practical implications teachers can use day-to-day in all aspects of their teaching.
