Thinking through Graphic Design History - Aggie Toppins

Graphic design has a paradoxical relationship to history. While it claims to promote originality and innovation - ideas that emphasize the new and unique - design practice is deeply embedded in previous ideals. Too often, design students encounter the past in brief visual impressions which seduce them to imitate form rather than engage with historical contexts. Even though it has claimed to be objective and even comprehensive, graphic design history has focused largely on individual careers and Eurocentric achievements.Yet the past swells with untapped potential. Graphic design history can serve the field of today and tomorrow, but its narratives require updates. History, like design, is always changing â ” and like design, history is driven by present-day questions. This book shows how students and practicing designers can enrich their work by thinking historically about design. With thoughtful analyses, stimulating creative prompts, inspiring case studies, and perspectives from designers all over the world, this book challenges our traditional understanding of graphic design history, and the very notion of the design canon, offering ways to shape socially engaged, critical practices.

Thinking through the image: The visual events of Miroslav Petříček - Milena Bartlová, Jiří Přibáň, Miroslav Petříček, Jaroslav Janošek, Jitka Hlavicov

Images are names for we cannot name,” says the philosopher, teacher, and translator Miroslav Petříček, who written on visual art for several decades. He has summarized his observations in, among other things, the book Thinking Through the Image: A Guide to Contemporary Philosophical Thought for the Non-Intermediate (2009), which formed the impulse for the 2023 exhibition at Prague City Gallery. The main idea behind the exhibition and its accompanying publication is was the presupposition that an encounter with an image is primarily a visual event. The aim is to emphasize that the languages of words and of images are closely related but that their material is different: an image or expression cannot be simply translated into words or concepts. An image does not show; it causes something. It is more than an illustration, nor is it a mere visual mediator of an idea; it is a specific way of inciting the mind to think of what has been painted. Thinking through the image is a response to the encounter with a visual event. By engaging in a dialogue with works by more than forty artists, the publication s five authors (Miroslav Petříček, Jitka Hlaváčková, Milena Bartlová, Jiří Přibáň, and Václav Janoščík) present their views on the language of visual art, its history, and brand-new approaches balancing on the line between real and digitally manipulated sensory input. Along with original photographic documentation by Jiří Thýn, they guide the reader through a labyrinth of visual events, from abstract sensory percepts via the search for shapes and concepts all the way to the construction of an idea: from the mysterious interface between chaos and order or light and darkness to metaimages of the contemporary world. The publication features work by the following artists: Karima Al-Mukhtarová, Zbyněk Baladrán, Mária Bartuszová, Jana Bernartová, Rudolf Fila, Tomáš Hlavina, Václav Janoščík and Adam Trbušek, Magdalena Jetelová, Magdaléna Kašparová, Michal Kindernay, Julie Kopová, Zdeněk Košek, Tom Kotik, Eva Koťátková, Václav Krůček, Kristina Láníková, Jiří Matějů, Maxmilián Aron Mootz, Pavel Mrkus, Jiří Načeradský and Jaroslav Nešetřil, Jaromír Novotný, Milan Paštéka, Ondřej Přibyl, Jiří Skála, Kateřina Šedá, Miloš Šejn, Adriena Šimotová, Josef Šmíd, Kateřina Štenclová, Studio of Joyful Creation (Marie Kúsová, Lukáš Paleček, Vojtěch Proske, George Radojči?), Dagmar Šubrtová, Eva Vápenková, Vladimíra and Miroslava Večeřová, Martin Velíšek, Petr Veselý, Lenka Vítková, Martin Zetová

Probably a zillion. And there are surely just as many ways of writing it. In CAPITALS, and with an exclamation mark ! Or with a question mark ? Or maybe both ?! As a tiny black word in the middle of a white page; or with large, multi–coloured, dancing letters ; maybe with a simple shape or an image.Being interested in graphic design means looking at and understanding the world around us. And being aware of the multitude of signs that shape our daily life day after day and freight it with meaning – whether it s a stop sign, a cornflakes packet, a psychedelic album cover, a seductive headline on the cover of a magazine, the more subtle typography of a page in a novel, a flashing pharmacy sign or the credits of a sci–fi film.Thinking about this plethora of signs was what led us to conceive this introduction to graphic design as a collection of beacons and benchmarks – as a toolbox for exploring and learning in a simple and intuitive way through play, alone or with others, whether you re a child or an adult. These are experiments, a series of suggestions, with no right or wrong answers. The four sections of this book – typography, posters, signs, identity – are all invitations to dive in, explore and let your eyes and your hands take you on a voyage of discovery! – Sophie Cure and Aurélien Farina

Also a History of Philosophy, Volume 3 - Jürgen Habermas

In the final volume of his history of philosophy, Jürgen Habermas offers a series of brilliant interpretations of the thinkers who set the agenda for contemporary philosophy. Beginning with masterful readings of Hume and Kant, he traces the genealogy of their postmetaphysical thinking through the main currents of historicism and German Idealism, and the multifarious reactions to Hegel⠙s influential system, culminating in nuanced readings of Marx, Kierkegaard and Peirce. Through his analysis of their work, Habermas demonstrates the interpretive fecundity of the central themes of his philosophical enterprise ⠓ his pragmatist theory of meaning, his communicative theories of subjectivity and sociality, and his discursive theory of normativity in its moral, juridical and political manifestations. In contrast to the bland compendia of thinkers and positions generally presented in surveys of the history of philosophy, Habermas⠙s thematically focused interpretations are destined to provoke controversy and stimulate dialogue. With this work one of the indisputably great thinkers of our time presents a powerful vindication of his conception of philosophy as an inherently discursive ⠓ and not merely analytical or speculative ⠓ enterprise.

Menu Design in Europe - Steven Heller

Menu Design in Europe is a mouthwatering feast for the eyes, featuring hundreds of European menus from the early 19th century to the end of the millennium. At once a history of continental cuisine and a sprawling survey of graphic styles, Menu Design in Europe satisfies the craving for foodies and design enthusiasts alike. The dominance of French cuisine provided the template for the culinary delights that spread throughout (and beyond) the continent. As restaurants and dining experiences increased in the 19th century, the need for a more formal presentation of available items resulted in a range of printed menus that could be both extravagant and simple. The 1891 menu from Parisâ ™s Le Grand Vefour, with its intricate die-cut design, evokes a bustling Belle Epoque bistro, while the 1932 menu from Londonâ ™s Royal Palace Hotel transports you to the bar at a spirited, Jazz Age nightspot. On the opposite side of the design spectrum, the menu for the mid-century Lasserre restaurant expresses a surrealistic simplicity. A range of stylistic decades is represented, from masterpieces of Art Nouveau and Art Deco to the graphic appropriations of the German Democratic Republic. Also showcased are the Michelin awarded restaurants of the celebrity chefâ “era and rarities such as a German military menu from World War II. More than just bills of fare, these menus often represent a memorable dining experience, at times being presented with as much care and attention to detail as the meal itself. So, although one cannot sit in La Tour Dâ ™Argent in 1952 and sample its famous duck dish Le Caneton Tour dâ ™Argent, we can surely imagine what it was like when looking at the waterfowl-themed illustration displaying the nightâ ™s offerings. Featuring an essay by graphic design historian Steven Heller and captions by ephemerist and antiquarian book dealer Marc Selvaggio, Menu Design In Europe features menus from leading collectors and institutions, providing a sumptuous visual banquet and historical document of two centuries of culinary traditions.

Draplin Design Co.: Pretty Much Everything is a mid-career survey of work, case studies, inspiration, road stories, lists, maps, how-tos, and advice from Aaron James Draplin, “the Bernie Sanders of Graphic Design” (Wired).“Aaron James Draplin lets the simplicity and universality he found in Lego toys as a child guide his work designing corporate logos and other work for companies like Nike and the New York Times, plus snowboards, posters and a slew of other projects.” —Globe and MailEsquire. Ford Motors. Burton Snowboards. The Obama administration. While all of these brands are vastly different, they share at least one thing in common: a teeny, little bit of Aaron James Draplin—one of the new school of influential graphic designers who combine the power of design, social media, entrepreneurship, and DIY aesthetic to create a successful business and way of life.Draplin Design Co. includes examples of his work—posters, record covers, logos—and presents the process behind his design with projects like Field Notes and the “Things We Love” State Posters. Draplin also offers valuable advice and hilarious commentary that illustrates how much more goes into design than just what appears on the page. Draplin writes in his introduction, “I made this stuff my life. When something is your hobby first, the ‘work’ part never feels the same. I love making this stuff. And I’m hoping that will never change. I’ve been lucky to pull off a killer life in design. London Underground By Design - Mark Ovenden

London Underground By Design is the beautifully illustrated new book from Mark Ovenden, the acclaimed author of Great Railway Maps of the World, published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Tube in 2013.Since its establishment 150 years ago as the world s first urban subway, the London Underground has continuously set a benchmark for design that has influenced transit systems from New York to Tokyo, Moscow to Paris and beyond. London Underground by Design is the first meticulous study of every aspect of that feat, a comprehensive history of one of the world s most celebrated design achievements, and of the visionaries who brought it to life.Beginning in the pioneering Victorian age, Mark Ovenden charts the evolution of architecture, branding, typeface, map design, interior and textile styles, posters, signage and graphic design and how these came together to shape not just the Underground s identity, but the character of London itself. This is the story of celebrated designers - from Frank Pick, the guru who conceptualised the modern Tube s look under the design fit for purpose mantra, to Harry Beck, Tube diagram creator, and from Marion Dorn, one of the twentieth century s leading textile designers, to Edward Johnston, creator of the distinctive font that bears his name, as well as Leslie Green, designer of central London s distinctive ruby-red tiled stations, and the Design Research Unit s head, Misha Black, who in the 1960s rebranded British Railways and created the Victoria line s distinctive style, and Sir Norman Foster, architect of Canary Wharf station. Fascinating ... authoritative ... bristles with photographs I ve never seen before ... the book does ample justice to a network that - overcrowded and overpriced - is a glorious palimpsest of design Andrew Martin, Observer I wouldn t ordinarily enthuse about one book at such length, but this is an important work...not because it s an entertaining read (it is), but because it identifies the birth of a brand...and records the birth of a new idea - the transport interchange Kevin McCloud, Grand Designs Magazine Mark Ovenden has devotedly documented the designs associated with [the Underground] ... addictive for anyone interested in the look of everyday life Telegraph This beautifully illustrated history is a worth tribute [to 150 years of design] Shortlist A wonderful, handsome book ... it makes me want to nerd out, get a travel card and whiz out to the strange ends of Metroland or the UFO shape of Southgate station Robert Bownes/Andrew Tuck, Monocle Weekly (Radio programme)Mark Ovenden is a British writer and broadcaster. Just Urban Design - Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Kian Goh

Contributions by urban planners, sociologists, anthropologists, architects, and landscape architects on the role and scope of urban design in creating more just and inclusive cities.Scholars who write about justice and the city rarely consider the practices and processes of urban design, while discourses on urban design often neglect concerns about justice. The editors of Just Urban Design take the position that urban design interventions have direct and important implications for justice in the city. The contributions in this volume contextualize the state of knowledge about urban design for justice, stress inclusivity as the key to justice in the city, affirm community participation and organizing as cornerstones of greater equity, and assert that a just urban design must center and privilege our most marginalized individuals and communities. Approaching spatial and social justice in the city through the lens of urban design, the contributors explore the possibility of envisioning and delivering social, spatial, and environmental justice in cities through urban design and the material reality of built environment interventions. The editors’ combined expertise includes urban politics and climate change, public space, mobility justice, community development, housing, and informality, and the contributors include researchers and practitioners from urban planning, sociology, anthropology, architecture, and landscape architecture. Contributors: Rachel Berney, Rebecca Choi, Teddy Cruz, Diane E.
