Thinking through Graphic Design History - Aggie Toppins
Graphic design has a paradoxical relationship to history. While it claims to promote originality and innovation - ideas that emphasize the new and unique - design practice is deeply embedded in previous ideals. Too often, design students encounter the past in brief visual impressions which seduce them to imitate form rather than engage with historical contexts. Even though it has claimed to be objective and even comprehensive, graphic design history has focused largely on individual careers and Eurocentric achievements.Yet the past swells with untapped potential. Graphic design history can serve the field of today and tomorrow, but its narratives require updates. History, like design, is always changing — and like design, history is driven by present-day questions. This book shows how students and practicing designers can enrich their work by thinking historically about design. With thoughtful analyses, stimulating creative prompts, inspiring case studies, and perspectives from designers all over the world, this book challenges our traditional understanding of graphic design history, and the very notion of the design canon, offering ways to shape socially engaged, critical practices.

Thinking through the image: The visual events of Miroslav Petříček - Milena Bartlová, Jiří Přibáň, Miroslav Petříček, Jaroslav Janošek, Jitka Hlavicov
"Images are names for we cannot name,” says the philosopher, teacher, and translator Miroslav Petříček, who written on visual art for several decades. He has summarized his observations in, among other things, the book Thinking Through the Image: A Guide to Contemporary Philosophical Thought for the Non-Intermediate (2009), which formed the impulse for the 2023 exhibition at Prague City Gallery. The main idea behind the exhibition and its accompanying publication is was the presupposition that an encounter with an image is primarily a visual event. The aim is to emphasize that the languages of words and of images are closely related but that their material is different: an image or expression cannot be simply translated into words or concepts. An image does not show; it causes something. It is more than an illustration, nor is it a mere visual mediator of an idea; it is a specific way of inciting the mind to think of what has been painted. Thinking through the image is a response to the encounter with a visual event. By engaging in a dialogue with works by more than forty artists, the publication's five authors (Miroslav Petříček, Jitka Hlaváčková, Milena Bartlová, Jiří Přibáň, and Václav Janoščík) ... Thinking Through Methods - John Levi Martin
Sociological research is hard enough already you don't need to make it even harder by smashing about like a bull in a china shop, not knowing what you're doing or where you're heading. Or so says John Levi Martin in this witty, insightful, and desperately needed primer on how to practice rigorous social science. Thinking Through Methods focuses on the practical decisions that you will need to make as a researcher where the data you are working with comes from and how that data relates to all the possible data you could have gathered. This is a user's guide to sociological research, designed to be used at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Rather than offer mechanical rules and applications, Martin chooses instead to team up with the reader to think through and with methods. He acknowledges that we are human beings and thus prone to the same cognitive limitations and distortions found in subjects and proposes ways to compensate for these limitations. Martin also forcefully argues for principled symmetry, contending that bad ethics makes for bad research, and vice versa. Bringing Talk to Life: Thinking Through Dialogue in The Classroom - Meghan Tipping, Paul Gurton

Do you wish you had more opportunity to listen to your students and include discussion of pressing and controversial issues in their lives and society today in your curriculum? Amidst rising recognition of how being articulate improves life chances, this book takes a look at these questions, outlining an alternative approach to curriculum and pedagogy.Bringing Talk to Life is firmly grounded in classroom experience and research evidence, and explores how a dialogic approach to teaching can improve students’ confidence and agency and restore teachers’ professional judgement. It outlines the social and linguistic barriers some students find in accessing knowledge through the school curriculum and identifies ways that teachers can help them become more confident and articulate by modelling different behavioural norms and introducing concept vocabulary in an accessible way.Using transcripts of classroom dialogues, teachers’ plans and examples of students’ work, chapters show by contrast that a talk-focussed, enquiry curriculum can free up teachers and pupils to explore ideas together, reigniting curiosity. It has been specifically written to connect issues of theory, history and contemporary practice and to allow students to make these connections easily. This is a history of twentieth-century architecture, written with close critical attention to the theories that lie behind the works described. Importantly, unlike other historical accounts, it does not take sides and urge the reader to identify with one strand of thinking or style of architecture at the expense of others, but it presents a dispassionate view, with persuasive arguments on behalf of different positions. It pursues the history of European and American architecture chronologically, but the history is interwoven with the philosophical ideas that informed both writers and architects and are essential for its understanding. The book is relevant to current issues of contemporary practice and education, showing that philosophical issues are fundamental and those relating to design decisions never go ... New Graphic Design
Neue Grafik, the -International Review of graphic design and related subjects, - was initiated by designer Josef Muller-Brockmann and published in eighteen issues between 1958 and 1965 by an editorial collective consisting of him, Richard Paul Lohse, Hans Neuburg und Carlo Vivarelli ( LMNV ). The complete volumes are now available in an excellent facsimile reprint from Lars Muller Publishers. From a historical point of view, Neue Grafik can be seen as a programmatic platform and effective publishing organ of Swiss graphic design, an international authority in its field at the time. Protagonists of the Swiss school and its rigorous Zurich faction lead an essential discourse on the foundations of current communication and constructive design. The influence of this movement cannot be over-stated. The Swiss school, also called -Inter-national Style, - became exemplary for the conceptual approach to corporate design of increasingly globally operating corporations and an influential precursor in the design of individual projects, such as posters, exhibitions, and publications. The Duncan Method - Thinking Through Dance - Eva Blažíčková
The text by renowned dance teacher Eva Blažíčková explains dance as a unique artistic discipline which, through teaching using the Duncan Method, can develop not only into an independent creative activity, but also positively influence the formation of a person and their relationship to the world. The author gradually introduces readers to the theoretical foundations of the Duncan Method and defines its current form, focusing on the key areas that shape it (Technique, Improvisation, Creation, The Art of Teaching). At the same time, she provides a detailed analysis of the differentiated qualities of movement. A significant part of the book is then devoted to didactic procedures and specific exercises that can be used in practice when teaching dance across age groups and types of schools. The publication is written in sensitive, poetic-philosophical language and, with its broader scope, opens up more general questions of artistic education, the quality of existence, and the values that shape human society. The whole is complemented by original drawings by the academic painter Vladimír Kokolia, which naturally accompany the reader through the landscape of Duncan's dance thinking.

Rudolph de Harak Graphic Designer - Richard Poulin
The first major publication on the life and work of America’s celebrated mid-century modern graphic designer. Rudolph de Harak (1924–2002) is one of the most influential modern graphic designers of the mid-20th century. This beautifully produced, comprehensive monograph is the first and only major publication devoted to this fascinating and significant figure and provides an in-depth account of de Harak’s life and work. From his early years in Los Angeles to his success as a design consultant and educator in New York City, de Harak brought huge inventiveness to everything he designed, from record covers to book jackets, from furniture to exhibitions. De Harak’s work was influenced by early modernist masters, such as Will Burtin, György Kepes, Alvin Lustig, and Max Bill, as well as by the rigour, simplicity and rationalism of the International Style, Abstract Expressionism, Op Art and Pop Art. Graphic design guru Steven Heller says, ‘Rudy de Harak is a solid link between American and Swiss modernism. He was an exemplar of minimalist form with a conceptual content. A book on his life and work is sorely needed and long overdue.’ Organized chronologically into six chapters that cover de Harak’s life and career from 1924 through to ... Battleships of the Iowa Class: A Design and Operational History - Philippe Caresse
The four battleships of the Iowa class, the crowning achievement of US battleship construction, had exceptionally long careers and each in their way left a distinctive mark not only on the US Navy but on naval history at large. Built as the ultimate American battleship and designed to engage the major units of the Japanese and German fleets, the class were commissioned in the closing stages of World War II, the beginning of half a century of service during which individual units saw action in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War and finally the Gulf War. As such these vessels are symbolic of the primacy of US seapower during the Cold War, and the preservation of all four of these mighty vessels as museum ships is testament not only to their enduring fascination, but also to the immense technical, financial, military and political resources wielded by the United States during the second half of the twentieth century. This superb new book includes a general introduction providing the context and design history of the entire class; detailed and extensively illustrated information on specifications, equipment and modifications; and comprehensive coverage of the construction, career, operations and preservation of ... The History of Information - Haughton Chris
SHORTLISTED FOR THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS 2025***A journey through the evolution of knowledge, communication, and information. The debut non-fiction book by best-selling author Chris Haughton.History, as it is often taught, is a list of kings and queens and treaties and events. It presents the what and when, but it rarely asks why.Why is it that we had kings and queens at all?Why then all of a sudden did we abandon them and shift to democracies? Why did the world’s religions rise around the same time? Why is society dominated by men?The answers all come down to the same thing: information. The striving to share information, and – at the same time – the striving to undermine it, explains so much of today''s world and connects so many seemingly unconnected things: the rise of religions, states, science, democracy, the west, militarism, racism, fascism, consumerism, big tech, polarisation, and AI.This history of information is closely connected to the history of visual communication – and as these two are largely the same – it makes sense to tell this story visually: a history of graphics told through graphics. The History of Information, through a mix of timelines, graphics, and illustrations, clearly breaks down and explains each ... Unknown localization key: "more"
