Stefan Zweig utiekol s nacistami okupovanej Európy do Brazílie, kde sa usadil v meste Petrópolis. Práve tu objavil Montaigneove dvojzväzkové Eseje, ktoré vnímal ako útechu vo svojom postavení vyhnanca. Montaigneov životopis písal s veľkým zaujatím, videl paralelu medzi nacistickou brutalitou a náboženskými vojnami v časoch Montaigneových. Za štyristo rokov sa ľudstvo nezmenilo.
