Kromě pražského rodáka Hanse Kelsena bychom asi stěží hledali jiného právního teoretika, jehož jméno se stalo synonymem celého jednoho proudu právního myšlení - tzv. analytické jurisprudence. Od roku 1961, kdy byla kniha Pojem práva poprvé publikovaná, inspirovala několik generaci právníků, filozofů i politologů a bez nadsázky lze říci, že dějiny angloamerické právní filozofie a teorie posledních téměř pěti desetiletí jsou do značné míry obdobím kritického vyrovnávání se s Hartovou koncepci práva jako systému primárních a sekundárních pravidel. Hartovy slavné polemiky s americkým právním teoretikem Lonem L. Fullerem, v nichž se originálním způsobem oživil spor mezi pozitivním a přirozeným právem, měly rozhodující význam pro tak rozmanité školy právního myšleni, jaké představuje například dílo Ronalda Dworkina, Josepha Raze nebo Neila MacCormicka. Hartova schopnost skloubit tradiční právní dogmatiku s lingvistickými a sociologickými metodami působí i dnes mimořádně přesvědčivě a svěže. H. L. A. Hart však nebyl autorem jediné knihy a například jeho studie Law, Liberty and Morality (Právo, svoboda a morálka, 1963) a The Morality of the Criminal Law (Morálka trestního práva, 1965) jsou principiální obhajobou liberálních názorů na právo a politiku. Hart v nich polemizuje například s dobovými názory lorda Devlina a hájí tu koncepci práva, podle niž nelze právními prostředky regulovat sféru morálky. V tomto i mnoha dalších názorech tak Hart kriticky rozvíjí nejlepší tradici britského liberálního myšlení a filozofie, jak ji známe z díla Jeremyho Benthama, Johna Stuarta Milla nebo Johna Austina. Liberální motivy jsou ostatně příznačné i pro Pojem práva. Možnost seznámit se s tímto zcela klíčovým dílem moderní právní filozofie v českém překladu proto jistě uvíta nejen právnická veřejnost, ale také všichni, kdo se zajímají o politickou a morální teorii či o praktické otázky politického rozhodování a tvorby práva nebo jeho aplikace.
