Rusko ve spolupráci s Francií začalo razantně prosazovat své politické i hospodářské cíle. Změnami byla ohrožena pozice Velké Británie. Německo začalo rozvíjet aktivitu na Dálném východě opožděně, slabost válečného loďstva ho nutila k opatrnosti. Berlín se zprvu snažil koordinovat svůj postup s jinými mocnostmi. Německu vyhovovala skutečnost, že se ruská pozornost načas primárně soustředila na Dálný východ. Od poloviny 90. let Němci a Britové rozvinuli poměrně úspěšnou spolupráci, především při poskytování dalších velkých půjček Číně a při stavbě železnic. Tato spolupráce však měla své limity. Britové dlouho zastávali názor, že by Čína měla zůstat otevřená volné hospodářské soutěži a ekonomická převaha jim měla zajistit úspěch. V rozporu s tímto přístupem bylo vymezování sfér vlivu, v nichž jednotlivé velmoci uplatňovaly dominantní ekonomickou pozici. Britové pochopili, že zabránit vytváření sfér vlivu nedokážou a důrazně se zapojili do procesu získávání železničních a důlních koncesí, britské banky se podílely na velkých půjčkách Pekingu, ... Pozornost je věnována stranickému euroskepticismu, který má své postavení v každém ze sledovaných států. Ve stranických systémech jednotlivých zemí střední Evropy mají vliv politické strany euroskeptické nebo strany s prvky euroskepticismu. Důvodů výskytu eurokritických postojů a odpovídajícího etablování takto zaměřených politických subjektů je celá řada, přičemž stěžejní je kombinace dlouhodobě charakteristických historických, etnokulturních, geografických a dalších faktorů (a tomu odpovídající střet zastánců národně a univerzálně zaměřené politiky) a nárůstu sociálně ekonomických problémů v současné době (vliv ekonomické krize, globalizace atd.). To způsobuje, že eurokritické politické subjekty sehrávají roli protestní alternativy vůči mainstreamovým stranám na politické scéně.
