Přitom se nevyhýbali tématům, o nichž jinak Bernhard s nikým nemluvil tak otevřeně a bez skrupulí, ať šlo o názory na uměleckou scénu, o honoráře, praktiky nakladatelství nebo o úzké přátelské vztahy, či dokonce o ženy. Hennetmair později poznamenal: Thomas musel něco tušit, někdy mi dokonce sám nosil dopisy a dokumenty, aniž jsme kdy na toto téma prohodili jediné slovo. Hennetmairovy zápisky líčí řadu detailů a událostí z pohledu člověka, který měl k autorovi přístup jako málokdo jiný. Rodinné scény a humor, jímž Bernhard oplýval ve chvílích, kdy se cítil v bezpečí, jsou cenným svědectvím spisovatelova soukromého života. Lékař se synem se v něm vydávají do temných údolních vesnic ve Štýrsku, kam nikdy neproniká slunce. Pacienti, odlišní svým postavením a povahou svého utrpení, představují pro mladého studenta obraz lidského života jako jediné vleklé nemoci. Zatímco v první části příběhu sledujeme popis rozrušené lidské psychiky, ve druhé části děj pokračuje zpovědí knížete Sauraua, kterého lékař navštíví na zámku uprostřed hlubokých lesů: Saurau ve svém dlouhém, vyčerpávajícím monologu, který je jakousi reflexí rozkládajícího se současného světa, vyjadřuje touhu po skoncování s existencí, kterou ve svém schizofrenním mozku vnímá jako anachronismus. Rozrušení se odehrává v krátkém období těsně před "katastrofou" a je jedním z nejpřesvědčivějších Bernhardových románů, předurčujících jeho pozdější prozaickou tvorbu.

Společně se svou ženou se ve vápence zabarikáduje, izoluje se od okolního světa a připravuje se na sepsání epochální práce; ale čím víc se na ni koncentruje, chce ji konečně dostat z hlavy na papír, tím více se od ní vzdaluje. V psaní ustavičně troskotá, a tak se jako poslední akt, jenž může (nejen jeho) životu dát smysl, jeví smrt: o Vánocích, v den narození Spasitele, Konrád svou ženu zastřelí. O dva dny později nalezne policie promrzlého muže ve vyschlé žumpě; Konrád se nechává bez odporu odvést. Román Vápenka je "hledáním příčin" této smrti, příčin ztroskotání psaní, ale obsahuje také témata deprimujícího dětství, nesnesitelné každodennosti nebo děsivé idyly, kterou představuje vápenka i její obyvatelé. Konrád a jeho žena jsou pro Bernharda typickými protiklady: on dává přednost Kropotkinovi, tedy politice, ekonomii a činu, ona Novalisovi, tedy poetické existenci a kontemplaci; Konrádovo postižení duševní ... V osmdesátých letech vstoupil do literatury detektivními romány (Gordický uzel, Selbův podvod a Spravedlnost podle Selba), v nichž představil omšelého soukromého detektiva Selba, který se potýká s nacionálněsocialistickou minulostí své země i svou vlastní. Ke kriminálnímu žánru se vrátil ještě v roce 2001 románem Selbova vražda. Světového úspěchu dosáhl románem Předčítač (Vorleser, 1995). Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) je jedním z nejvýznamnějších filosofů 20. století a jeho dílo podstatným způsobem proměnilo a stále ovlivňuje analytickou filosofii. Většina čtenářů jeho spisů zná tzv. raného a pozdního Wittgensteina, ztělesněné ve dvou hlavních pracích, raném Logicko-filosofickém traktátu a pozdějších Filosofických zkoumáních. Přechod mezi raným a pozdním Wittgensteinem byl však poměrně dlouhý, složitý a nejednoznačný, a v některých bodech vedl blízko konkurenčních filosofických tradic, zvláště fenomenologie. Fragmentární a kryptické Wittgensteinovy texty se vzpírají jednoduchému a jednoznačnému výkladu; i proto ve světě vychází řada interpretačních prací. V našem prostředí dosud systematická výkladová monografie Wittgensteinovi věnována nebyla. Přítomná práce se soustřeďuje právě na tzv. "střední", přechodové období s jeho unikátními "fenomenologickými" intuicemi: na úlohu "fenoménů", které vedou a určují logickou formu jazyka vypovídajícího o světě, na rozbor forem barvy, prostoru a času, které jsou nezbytným předpokladem smysluplné zkušenosti, tj. zkušenosti artikulované smysluplným jazykem, nebo na úlohu situovaného aktéra. Obrat k pozdnímu Wittgensteinovi se tak ukazuje ne jako prosté odmítnutí traktátovské koncepce, nýbrž jako složité nahlédnutí toho, že pokus o opravu traktátovského rámce "fenomenologickými" prostředky nebyl úspěšný. Normativistické myšlenky Modré a hnědé knihy a Filosofických zkoumání jsou však v nejednom ohledu předznamenány už v rukopisech Wittgensteinova "středního" období.
