Hennetmair později poznamenal: Thomas musel něco tušit, někdy mi dokonce sám nosil dopisy a dokumenty, aniž jsme kdy na toto téma prohodili jediné slovo. Hennetmairovy zápisky líčí řadu detailů a událostí z pohledu člověka, který měl k autorovi přístup jako málokdo jiný. Rodinné scény a humor, jímž Bernhard oplýval ve chvílích, kdy se cítil v bezpečí, jsou cenným svědectvím spisovatelova soukromého života. Společně se svou ženou se ve vápence zabarikáduje, izoluje se od okolního světa a připravuje se na sepsání epochální práce; ale čím víc se na ni koncentruje, chce ji konečně dostat z hlavy na papír, tím více se od ní vzdaluje. V psaní ustavičně troskotá, a tak se jako poslední akt, jenž může (nejen jeho) životu dát smysl, jeví smrt: o Vánocích, v den narození Spasitele, Konrád svou ženu zastřelí. O dva dny později nalezne policie promrzlého muže ve vyschlé žumpě; Konrád se nechává bez odporu odvést.
