Nizozemský filosof Martin Stokhof (*1950) se ve svých novějších pracích věnuje zvláště filosofii jazyka a významu a problémům jejich vědeckého pojednávání. V poslední čtvrtině minulého století byl jednou z určujících postav formální sémantiky, usilující o rigorózní popis významu v přirozeném jazyce za pomoci prostředků formální logiky. Na rozdíl od mnoha kolegů zaujal posléze k projektu formální sémantiky výrazně kritický postoj, mj. v souvislosti se svým wittgensteinovským bádáním, které je druhým těžištěm jeho novější práce. V první stati se Stokhof zabývá charakterem a předpoklady formálně sémantického projektu jako takového. Ukazuje, že úvahy na téma tzv. radikální intepretace a normativity významu nás nutí přehodnotit vztah mezi významem jazykového vyjádření a jeho interpretací, a to způsobem, který je s tímto projektem jen obtížně slučitelný. V druhé stati autor představuje raného Ludwiga Wittgensteina jako zřejmého, byť zároveň zcela opomínaného, předchůdce formální sémantiky. Věnuje se systematickým a v menší míře i historickým souvislostem mezi Traktátem a pozdější formální sémantikou. Z nalezených podobností a rozdílů pak vyvozuje závěry ohledně soudobého statusu této disciplíny na pomezí filosofie a empirických věd. Konečně třetí studie formální sémantiku ohledává z hlediska jejího kontrastu s pozdějším Wittgensteinovým myšlením o jazyce.
