Velikán svetovej literatúry Stefan Zweig (1881 – 1942), spisovateľ, esejista, básnik a prekladateľ, stále oslovuje svojím dielom nových a nových čitateľov. V slovenskom preklade vyšli napríklad jeho romány Opojenie z premeny, Netrpezlivosť srdca, eseje Hviezdne hodiny ľudstva, Liečba duchom, autobiografický román Svet včerajška, biografické romány Balzac, Mária Antoinetta či Mária Stuartová. Sujetom poslednej Zweigovej knihy je renesančný mysliteľ, humanista a skeptik, otec literárnej esejistiky, Michel de Montaigne. Hoci biografia Montaigne nebola dokončená, zostali v nej autorove poznámky, ktoré zvykol vždy pred vydaním knihy odstrániť, nie je to jej nedostatkom, naopak. Podáva svedectvo nielen o Montaigneovi a jeho dobe, ale aj o Zweigovi. Biografia Montaigne vznikla šťastnou náhodou. Stefan Zweig utiekol s nacistami okupovanej Európy do Brazílie, kde sa usadil v meste Petrópolis. Práve tu objavil Montaigneove dvojzväzkové Eseje, ktoré vnímal ako útechu vo svojom postavení vyhnanca. Montaigneov životopis písal s veľkým zaujatím, videl paralelu medzi nacistickou brutalitou a náboženskými vojnami v časoch Montaigneových. Za štyristo rokov sa ľudstvo nezmenilo. Stefan Zweig vzdáva úctu Michelovi de Montaigne, človeku a humanistovi, ktorý nikdy nezradil svoje vnútorné presvedčenie a aj v najťažších časoch zostal homme libre, slobodným človekom.
