Literature and Learning - Stefan Collini
The study and teaching of English literature is generally regarded as one of the central disciplines in the modern university, yet for much of its history it struggled to gain academic legitimacy and was frequently derided as ''a soft option''. Its early professors responded by emphasizing its scholarly character, foregrounding philology and literary history in ways that marked the syllabus far into the twentieth century. Stefan Collini provides here the first full account of the discipline''s development from its late-eighteenth-century beginnings up to the early 1960s. Paying special attention to institutional settings, he challenges numerous assumptions about the character of universities in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From the detailed exploration of syllabuses, exam papers, and other institutional records, the impact of literary criticism is revealed to be later and more partial than is commonly assumed. Rather than seeing the early teaching of English literature as ''a substitute for religion'' or ''a means to soften class conflict'', Collini emphasizes the role of ideals of learnedness and scholarship, as well as of external factors such as opportunities for employment in the civil service and secondary school-teaching. There are full discussions of the parts played by such figures as John Churton ... Unknown localization key: "more"

What are Universities For? - Stefan Collini
Across the world, universities are more numerous than they have ever been, yet at the same time there is unprecedented confusion about their purpose and scepticism about their value. What Are Universities For? offers a spirited and compelling argument for completely rethinking the way we see our universities, and why we need them. Stefan Collini challenges the common claim that universities need to show that they help to make money in order to justify getting more money. Instead, he argues that we must reflect on the different types of institution and the distinctive roles they play. In particular we must recognize that attempting to extend human understanding, which is at the heart of disciplined intellectual enquiry, can never be wholly harnessed to immediate social purposes - particularly in the case of the humanities, which both attract and puzzle many people and are therefore the most difficult subjects to justify. At a time when the future of higher education lies in the balance, What Are Universities For? offers all of us a better, deeper and more enlightened understanding of why universities matter, to everyone.

Learning and Behavior - Amy L. Odum, James E. Mazur
Learning and Behavior reviews how people and animals learn and how their behaviors are changed because of learning. It describes the most important principles, theories, controversies, and experiments that pertain to learning and behavior that are applicable to diverse species and different learning situations. Both classic studies and recent trends and developments are explored, providing a comprehensive survey of the field. Although the behavioral approach is emphasized, many cognitive theories are covered as well, along with a chapter on comparative cognition. Real-world examples and analogies make the concepts and theories more concrete and relevant to students. In addition, most chapters provide examples of how the principles covered have been employed in applied and clinical behavior analysis. The text proceeds from the simple to the complex. The initial chapters introduce the behavioral, cognitive, and neurophysiological approaches to learning. Later chapters give extensive coverage of classical conditioning and operant conditioning, beginning with basic concepts and findings and moving to theoretical questions and current issues. Other chapters examine the topics of reinforcement schedules, avoidance and punishment, stimulus control and concept learning, observational learning and motor skills, comparative cognition, and choice. The Oxford Guide to Arthurian Literature and Legend - Alan Lupack
The Oxford Guide to Arthurian Literature and Legend is both a critical history of the Arthurian tradition and a reference guide to Arthurian works, names, and symbols. It offers a comprehensive survey of the legends in all of their manifestations, from their origins in medieval literature to their adaptation in modern literature, arts, film, and popular culture. Not only does it analyse familiar Arthurian characters and themes, it also demonstrates the tremendous continuity of the legends by examining the ways that they have been reinterpreted over the years. For instance, the motif of the abduction of Guinevere can be traced from Chrétien de Troyes''s Lancelot or the Knight of the Cart and the vulgate cycle of French romances in the 13th century, to Malory''s retelling of the story in the Morte d''Arthur, through various modern adaptations like those in T. H. White''s The Once and Future King and the contemporary film First Knight. This indispensable reference guide contains seven essays that trace the development of the Arthurian legend, encyclopedic entries, bibliographies, and a comprehensive index. The essays explore the chronicle and romance traditions, the influence of Malory, the Grail legend, the figures of Gawain and Merlin, and the story of ... Unknown localization key: "more"

By breaking down the barriers between literature and philosophy, this book opens the field of Chinese literature to new interpretive methods, and brings Confucian values to readers through literature. The anthology is a selection of 28 literary works—12 poems and 16 prose pieces—by 21 authors from the Tang and Song Dynasties (618-1279). Ethnic Studies and Youth Literature
Brings together scholars and practitioners to present an ethnic studies framework for studying and teaching youth literature. For decades, youth literature has been reckoning with its role in systemic racism and oppression. In this landmark edited volume, Marilisa Jiménez GarcÃa and Sonia Alejandra RodrÃguez assemble a cadre of well-known women of color scholars and practitioners to make a case for ethnic studies as a path for pursuing racial justice in the field. Ethnic studies, they argue, demands that we go beyond seeing race, ethnicity, culture, and diversity as questions of identity and difference. Instead, it shows us how marginalized positionalities create epistemologies that shape our understanding of age, craft, genre, and knowledge production. Multidisciplinary and intersectional in its approach, Ethnic Studies and Youth Literature analyzes US imperialism through the lens of youth literature and vice versa, shedding light on the roots of our current culture wars and curriculum battles.

Experiential Learning and Community
Institutional autonomy, private interests, and relevance are central themes in the evolving discourse on the nature and role of higher education. Whether pushing institutions to become more responsive to industry and labour market demands or resisting these very pressures, leaders and policymakers insist that universities must adapt. Experiential Learning and Community explores the changing role of the university, with a particular focus on how the rise of experiential learning (EL) is reshaping teaching and learning.Through the lens of EL, universities are balancing two core principles: fostering an engaged citizenry and democracy, while also equipping learners with the skills needed for a prosperous economy. As EL rapidly expands in various forms – such as work-integrated learning like co-ops and internships, as well as community-engaged student placements such as service learning – universities are extending their reach far beyond the campus. The book asks: Should universities fully embrace EL? If so, how can institutions and faculty adapt to this fundamental shift in their core mission? Are community partners now equal collaborators with a voice in pedagogy and curriculum? And perhaps most importantly, are students better served by this emergent EL approach to teaching and learning? Literature and Science in the Nineteenth Century
''It has been said by its opponents that science divorces itself from literature; but the statement, like so many others, arises from lack of knowledge.'' John Tyndall, 1874Although we are used to thinking of science and the humanities as separate disciplines, in the nineteenth century that division was not recognized. As the scientist John Tyndall pointed out, not only were science and literature both striving to better ''man''s estate'', they shared a common language and cultural heritage. The same subjects occupied the writing of scientists and novelists: the quest for ''origins'', the nature of the relation between society and the individual, and what it meant to be human. This anthology brings together a generous selection of scientific and literary material to explore the exchanges and interactions between them. Fed by a common imagination, scientists and creative writers alike used stories, imagery, style, and structure to convey their meaning, and to produce work of enduring power. The anthology includes writing by Charles Babbage, Charles Darwin, Sir Humphry Davy, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Michael Faraday, Thomas Malthus, Louis Pasteur, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Mark Twain and many others, and introductions and notes guide the reader through the topic''s many strands. The Routledge Introduction to English Canadian Literature and Digital Humanities - Paul Barrett, Sarah Roger
The Routledge Introduction to English Canadian Literature and Digital Humanities is a guide to the debates, concepts, and theories at the intersection of Canadian literary studies and digital humanities. Equal parts theoretical and practical, it focuses on debates that overlap the two domains. The book historicizes the connections between the two by surveying the history of digital humanities in Canada, the tradition of Canadian writers engaging with technology, and digital humanities analyses of Canadian literature. It also situates both CanLit and DH with respect to contemporary concerns about alterity, queerness, race, and Indigeneity, and it demonstrates how digital technologies allow writers and scholars to intervene in them. The book complements its theoretical discussions with a practical introduction to digital humanities methods. Using Canadian literary texts and with examples from projects at the intersection of CanLit and DH as examples, it introduces key DH approaches to novice readers. Topics covered include data collection, data management, and textual analysis, as well as essential DH tools and the Python programming language. A concluding case study guides readers interested in applying the ideas presented throughout.

Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature - Martin Humpál, Helena Březinová
The book Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature focuses on migration as it has manifested itself in literature and culture in the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Since migration almost always leads to a disturbance of identity and creates a potential for conflicts between individuals, as well as between groups of people, the authors have chosen to examine the theme of migration in relation to the questions of identity, both national and individual. The present monograph therefore concentrates on such cases of disturbance, disruption and hybridization of identity, as they are represented in literary works linked to the European North. The book will be of interest to all readers who are interested in issues such as xenophobia, racism, nationalism, cosmopolitism, globalization, cultural transfer, cultural hybridity, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

Literature and Evil - Georges Bataille
''Literature is not innocent,'' stated Georges Bataille in this extraordinary 1957 collection of essays, arguing that only by acknowledging its complicity with the knowledge of evil can literature communicate fully and intensely. These literary profiles of eight authors and their work, including Emily Brontë''s Wuthering Heights, Baudelaire''s Les Fleurs du Mal and the writings of Sade, Kafka and Sartre, explore subjects such as violence, eroticism, childhood, myth and transgression, in a work of rich allusion and powerful argument.

Reading Literature and Chronic Pain - Dr Josie Billington
This valuable and insightful study into chronic pain and its treatment advances a striking analysis of the complex phenomenon of chronic pain, also attesting to the importance of the medical humanities in addressing urgent questions that medical science alone cannot resolve. The primary purpose of this book is twofold. First, to demonstrate empirically – against a conceptual background drawn from multiple disciplines and knowledge bases (historical, medical, neurobiological, psychological, socio/anthropological) – how an apparently ‘soft’ intervention such as literary reading can effectively combat symptoms of a condition as intractable as chronic pain. Second, to explore what this evidence tells us about pain (as a lived experience as well as a condition in urgent need of new treatment options) and about literature and the reading of fiction and poetry as therapeutic influences in contemporary health and healthcare, most particularly in alleviating the (often severe) mental health difficulties with which chronic pain is almost universally associated.Based on unique empirical research with people who are living with chronic pain, this book is the first of its kind to demonstrate the value of literature and literary reading both as a discourse for understanding and ''finding'' pain and as an intervention in its treatment.

Literature and Politics in the Age of Nationalism - Talat Ahmed
This book aims to provide a historical account of the All-India Progressive Writers? Association (AIPWA). In a structured narrative, it focuses on the political processes inside India, events and circumstances in South Asia and the debates and literary movements in Europe and the United States to demonstrate how the literary project was specifically informed by literary-political movements. It explores the theorisation of literature and politics that informed progressive writing and argues that the progressive conception of literature, art and politics was closer to the theorisation of two thinkers of whom the writers themselves knew very little ? Leon Trotsky and Antonio Gramsci.

Race in American Literature and Culture
Exploring the unsteady foundations of American literary history, Race in American Literature and Culture examines the hardening of racial fault lines throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth while considering aspects of the literary and interrelated traditions that emerged from this fractured cultural landscape. A multicultural study of the influential and complex presence of race in the American imagination, the book pushes debate in exciting new directions. Offering expert explorations of how the history of race has been represented and written about, it shows in what ways those representations and writings have influenced wider American culture. Distinguished scholars from African American, Latinx, Asian American, Native American, and white American studies foreground the conflicts in question across different traditions and different modes of interpretation, and are thus able comprehensively and creatively to address in the volume how and why race has been so central to American literature as a whole.

Literature and Sustainability
How might literary scholarship engage with the sustainability debate? Aimed at research scholars and advanced students in literary and environmental studies, this collection brings together twelve essays by leading and up-coming scholars on the theme of literature and sustainability. In todayÂ’s sociopolitical world, sustainability has become a ubiquitous term, yet one potentially driven to near meaninglessness by the extent of its usage. While much has been written on sustainability in various domains, this volume sets out to foreground the contributions literary scholarship might make to notions of sustainability, both as an idea with a particular history and as an attempt to reconceptualise the way we live. Essays in this volume take a range of approaches, using the tools of literary analysis to interrogate sustainabilityÂ’s various paradoxes and to examine how literature in its various forms might envisage notions of sustainability. An electronic edition of this book is freely available under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND) licence.

Teaching and Learning on the Verge - Shanti Elliott
Our changing world demands that all students become agile thinkers who can grow sturdy interpersonal and civic relationships. This book proposes that teachers who think of learning as “playing with power†tap the creative and subversive energies of young people, making academic work far more consequential than a piece of paper with a grade on it.  Young people must learn to play democracy just as they might play a violin or a sport: not as a game of “let’s pretend,†but fully participating in the language, spaces, and possibilities of public life.  Based on 20 years of teaching experience and research in schools across the country, Teaching and Learning on the Verge demonstrates how educators in all disciplines can integrate civic engagement, multicultural literacy, and leadership into their classrooms and programs. Featuring voices from literature and philosophy in dialogue with the living stage of classrooms, streets, and community spaces, this book offers an imaginative and practical guide to democratic education.
