Encounters and Destinies - Stefan Zweig
'The European voice... sparkling with poetic brilliance' - TLS'Zweig's accumulated historical and cultural studies [are] almost too impressive to take in' - Clive JamesStefan Zweig was a born eulogist. In this collection of powerful elegies, homages and personal memories, Zweig forms a richly interconnected portrait of key creative figures in the European cultural diaspora up to 1939. Many of those mourned or celebrated here cast a long spiritual shadow over Zweig's own writing life: Verhaeren, Rolland, Nietzsche, Roth, Mahler, Rilke and Freud.Zweig's farewells, souvenirs and declarations of gratitude demonstrate his ardent pan-Europeanism and rich friendships across borders. Montaigne - Stefan Zweig
Velikán svetovej literatúry Stefan Zweig (1881 – 1942), spisovateľ, esejista, básnik a prekladateľ, stále oslovuje svojím dielom nových a nových čitateľov. Montaigneov životopis písal s veľkým zaujatím, videl paralelu medzi nacistickou brutalitou a náboženskými vojnami v časoch Montaigneových. Za štyristo rokov sa ľudstvo nezmenilo. Stefan Zweig vzdáva úctu Michelovi de Montaigne, človeku a humanistovi, ktorý nikdy nezradil svoje vnútorné presvedčenie a aj v najťažších časoch zostal homme libre, slobodným človekom. Slovenský preklad je doplnený o esej Mareka Kurtu Zweig vs Montaigne.

The Last Miracle: Jewish Stories - Stefan Zweig
'Thoughtful, highly observant, and humane' GuardianTwo thousand years of human struggleFive tales of family breakdown, political struggle, and monomaniacal obsession from one of the defining voices of the European Jewish diaspora.

Marie Antoinette - Stefan Zweig
“The most influential biography of Marie Antoinette.” —Guardian “Bids fair to be the definitive life of that tragic queen.” —New York Times International Bestseller: One of the great writers of the 20th century paints a vivid portrait of one of the most famous, complex, and controversial characters in European history.  Stefan Zweig based his biography of Marie Antoinette, who became the Queen of France at the age of fifteen, on the correspondence between her and her mother, and her great love the Count Axel von Fersen. Zweig analyzes the chemistry of a woman’s soul from her intimate pleasures to her public suffering as a Queen under the weight of misfortune and history. Zweig describes Marie Antoinette in the King’s bedroom, in the enchanted and extravagant world of the Trianon, and with her children. And in his account of The Revolution, he describes her resolve during the failed escape to Varennes, her imprisonment in the Conciergerie and her final tragic destiny under the guillotine.  Stefan Zweig’s account has been the definitive biography of Marie Antoinette since its publication, inspiring Antonia Fraser and the recent film adaptation.

Audiokniha: Na výbuchy zvůle, fanatismu, násilí a nesnášenlivosti v Německu 30. let 20. století zareagoval rakouský prozaik a esejista Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) nepřímo, oklikou přes 16. století, století humanismu a reformace: napsal beletrizovaný životopis humanisty Erasma Rotterdamského (1934).

V jedenácti kapitolách popisuje Zweig velmi podrobně a s velkým psychologickým vhledem a pochopením život a působení gaskoňského šlechtice, renesančního myslitele, humanisty, skeptika a otce literární esejistiky Montaigna, který vystupoval proti převládající vyprázdněné a životu vzdálené latinské vzdělanosti univerzit. V brazilské Petrópolis, kam Zweig odešel z nacisty devastované Evropy, objevil Montaignovy dvousvazkové eseje, v jejichž autorovi nalezl mistra a učitele rezignace a ústupu k sobě samému. The World of Yesterday - Stefan Zweig
Stefan Zweig's seminal memoir recalls the golden age of pre-war Europe - its seeming permanence, its promise and its devastating fall. Through the story of his life and his relationships with the leading literary figures of the day, Zweig's fervent, evocative prose paints a stunning portrait of an era that danced brilliantly on the brink of extinction. This translation by the award-winning Anthea Bell captures the passionate fluency of Zweig's writing in arguably his most important work, completed the day before his suicide in 1942 - a unique elegy for a lost world of security and peace.

Journeys - Stefan Zweig
A collection of the great writer''s observations, made during his travels across the Europe he loved so muchWhen I am on a journey, all ties suddenly fall away. I feel myself quite unburdened, disconnected, free - There is something in it marvellously uplifting and invigorating. Whole past epochs suddenly return: nothing is lost, everything still full of inception, enticement. For the insatiably curious and ardent Europhile Stefan Zweig, travel was both a necessary cultural education and a personal balm for the depression he experienced when rooted in one place for too long. He spent much of his life weaving between the countries of Europe, visiting authors and friends, exploring the continent in the heyday of international rail travel.Comprising a lifetime''s observations on Zweig''s travels in Europe, this collection can be dipped into or savoured at length, and paints a rich and sensitive picture of Europe before the Second World War.

Balzac - Stefan Zweig

Tá druhá ho zlomila a stratiac svoje ideály si vzal život. Unknown localization key: "more"

Unknown localization key: "more"

Literature and Learning - Stefan Collini
The study and teaching of English literature is generally regarded as one of the central disciplines in the modern university, yet for much of its history it struggled to gain academic legitimacy and was frequently derided as ''a soft option''. Its early professors responded by emphasizing its scholarly character, foregrounding philology and literary history in ways that marked the syllabus far into the twentieth century. Stefan Collini provides here the first full account of the discipline''s development from its late-eighteenth-century beginnings up to the early 1960s. Paying special attention to institutional settings, he challenges numerous assumptions about the character of universities in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From the detailed exploration of syllabuses, exam papers, and other institutional records, the impact of literary criticism is revealed to be later and more partial than is commonly assumed. Rather than seeing the early teaching of English literature as ''a substitute for religion'' or ''a means to soften class conflict'', Collini emphasizes the role of ideals of learnedness and scholarship, as well as of external factors such as opportunities for employment in the civil service and secondary school-teaching. There are full discussions of the parts played by such figures as John Churton ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Conquistadors and Aztecs - Stefan Rinke
A highly readable narrative of the causes, course, and consequences of the Spanish Conquest, incorporating the perspectives of many Native groups, Black slaves, and the conquistadors, timed with the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.Five hundred years ago, a flotilla landed on the coast of Yucatán under the command of the Spanish conquistador Hérnan Cortés. While the official goal of the expedition was to explore and to expand the Christian faith, everyone involved knew that it was primarily about gold and the hunt for slaves. That a few hundred Spaniards destroyed the Aztec empire--a highly developed culture--is an old chestnut, because the conquistadors, who had every means to make a profit, did not succeed alone. They encountered groups such as the Tlaxcaltecs, who suffered from the Aztec rule and were ready to enter into alliances with the foreigners to overthrow their old enemy. In addition, the conquerors benefited from the diseases brought from Europe, which killed hundreds of thousands of locals. Drawing on both Spanish and indigenous sources, this account of the conquest of Mexico from 1519 to 1521 not only offers a dramatic narrative of these events--including the fall of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan ... Stars, Cars and Crystal Meth
Jack Sutherland, the narrator and protagonist of this memoir has, you might say, led a charmed life in the face of seeming damnation. A confirmed alcoholic in his early teens, by his twenties he was PA and bodyguard to the Hollywood stars most notably Michael Stipe, Ru Paul and Mickey Rourke. His work took him to exotic destinations around the world and bizarre encounters and requests. It also led him back to a smorgasbord of lethal addictions: alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy and perhaps most damaging of all crystal meth and the crazed chem sex that characterises its use. On the shores of death's coastline, a nine stone skeleton in a frame that once boasted the shape and tone of a bodybuilder, Jack is saved. By his father, one of the literary world's most esteemed personalities: John Sutherland.A son's memoir told through the prism and prose of a father will surely take its place among the classics of contemporary addiction and recovery stories like A Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man and Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. Stars, Cars & Crystal Meth lifts the lid on the shadow world of the Hollywood PA with grim but ultimately inspiring honesty.

Birds, Beasts and a World Made New - Guillaume Apollinaire, Velimir Khlebnikov
“Wonderful . . . and full of life. This is a book for discovery, for pleasure and delight.” – George Szirtes, author of The Photographer at SixteenA revelatory volume of 2 of the 20th century’s great poetic innovators, Guillaume Apollinaire and Velimir Khlebnikov, in vibrant new translations by Robert ChandlerOffering a fresh angle on two of the most innovative poets of the 20th century, and grouping poems by theme, celebrated translator and poet Robert Chandler finds surprising connections between Apollinaire and Khlebnikov, from their interest in animal poems and bestiaries to their distinctive approaches to war poetry.Although Apollinaire and Khlebnikov never met, their restless innovations in poetic form shared much in common. Both pushed poetry to its limit, and their experiments proved fertile for generations of poets to come. Khlebnikov became associated with Futurism, though his inventiveness with language moved him far beyond it, while Apollinaire influenced a dizzying array of avant-garde movements, including Surrealism, Dadaism and Cubism.Chandler offers a stimulating selection from both poets’ work in beautifully vivid new translations. Showcasing these poets’ exhilarating capacity for innovation as well as their more direct, heartfelt verse, this work offers a surprising journey into the world of two great Modernist poets.Part ...
