Jeho vypravěč, mladý poválečný navrátilec Nick Carraway, přijíždí ze Středozápadu do New Yorku, aby zkusil štěstí jako burzovní makléř. Náhoda ho přivede do podnájmu v sousedství pohádkového sídla tajemného boháče Jaye Gatsbyho, na jehož velkolepé večírky se každý týden sjíždí půlka New Yorku.
