Ačkoliv její protagonisté – Castellio, Kalvín a Servet – jsou historické osobnosti 16. století, jedná se o vášnivou a povznášející obranu nejzákladnějších hodnot evropské civilizace: svobody, tolerance, života a lidskosti proti jakékoli znásilňující, totalitní ideologii. Castelliův zápas s Kalvínem, „boj komára se slonem“, ukazuje Zweig jako zápas neohroženého svědomí a myšlení jednotlivce s násilnou teokratickou diktaturou. Jejich střetnutí vrcholí poté, co z Kalvínovy vůle dojde v Ženevě k upálení humanistického učence Miguela Serveta. Proti této justiční vraždě a na obranu dalších „kacířů“ vystoupí Sebastian Castellio a riskuje při tom vlastní život. Jako první formuluje ve své době převratnou teorii snášenlivosti a tolerance, jejíž jádro lze vystihnout slovy, že upálení kacíře není nic jiného než vražda a že „upálit člověka neznamená obhajovat učení, nýbrž zabít člověka“. Komár sice v zápase se slonem na čas podléhá, ale Castelliovy myšlenky a díla o několik desetiletí později ožívají v mnoha zemích Evropy a stávají se pevnou součástí evropského kulturního vědomí. Český překlad vyšel poprvé na počátku normalizace v roce 1970; byla v tom nejspíš nepozornost nebo přetíženost tehdejších cenzorů. Čtenářům totiž muselo být jasné, že Zweigův esej je působivou obhajobou svobody proti každé totalitní ideologii, a čerpali z něj naději podobně jako čtenáři v roce 1936. Význam Svědomí proti násilí je však aktuální trvale. Připomíná nám, že Západ nestojí na ekonomickém růstu, konzumu nebo vyprázdněných byrokratických pravidlech, ale na těžce vybojovaných a prožitých hodnotách.

Myšlenky o morálních předsudcích (Morgenröthe. Gedanken über die moralischen Vorurtheile). Kniha vyšla koncem června 1881 u Ernsta Schmeitznera v Chemnitzu. Roku 1887 opatřil Nietzsche neprodané zásoby předmluvou a nakladatel E. W. Fritzsch v Lipsku je uvedl na trh jako druhé vydání. Spis, který se v chronologii Nietzschova díla nalézá mezi Lidským, příliš lidským (1878-1880) a Radostnou vědou (1882), je souborem úvah, postřehů a aforismů, promyšleně seskupených do pěti knih, které nemají vlastní názvy, jsou však komponovány kolem tematických těžišť.
