Nietzsche - Stefan Zweig

A scintillating biographical study of the one of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth century, by one of the bestselling writers of the twentieth. In this vivid biography, Zweig eschews traditional academic discussion and focuses on Nietzsche''s habits, passions and obsessions. This work, concentrating on the man rather than the work, on the tragedy of his existence and his apartness from the world in which he moved in enforced isolation, is a tour de force, drawing the reader inexorably into Nietzsche''s tragic trajectory.Illustrated with numerous photographs relating to Nietzsche and his European locations, this superb translation by Will Stone is essential reading for anyone interested in Nietzsche, Zweig, first-class biographies and philosophy.

Montaigne - Stefan Zweig

Velikán svetovej literatúry Stefan Zweig (1881 – 1942), spisovateľ, esejista, básnik a prekladateľ, stále oslovuje svojím dielom nových a nových čitateľov. Montaigneov životopis písal s veľkým zaujatím, videl paralelu medzi nacistickou brutalitou a náboženskými vojnami v časoch Montaigneových.

Marie Antoinette - Stefan Zweig

“The most influential biography of Marie Antoinette.” —Guardian “Bids fair to be the definitive life of that tragic queen.” —New York Times International Bestseller: One of the great writers of the 20th century paints a vivid portrait of one of the most famous, complex, and controversial characters in European history.  Stefan Zweig based his biography of Marie Antoinette, who became the Queen of France at the age of fifteen, on the correspondence between her and her mother, and her great love the Count Axel von Fersen. Zweig analyzes the chemistry of a woman’s soul from her intimate pleasures to her public suffering as a Queen under the weight of misfortune and history. Zweig describes Marie Antoinette in the King’s bedroom, in the enchanted and extravagant world of the Trianon, and with her children. And in his account of The Revolution, he describes her resolve during the failed escape to Varennes, her imprisonment in the Conciergerie and her final tragic destiny under the guillotine.  Stefan Zweig’s account has been the definitive biography of Marie Antoinette since its publication, inspiring Antonia Fraser and the recent film adaptation.

V jedenácti kapitolách popisuje Zweig velmi podrobně a s velkým psychologickým vhledem a pochopením život a působení gaskoňského šlechtice, renesančního myslitele, humanisty, skeptika a otce literární esejistiky Montaigna, který vystupoval proti převládající vyprázdněné a životu vzdálené latinské vzdělanosti univerzit. V brazilské Petrópolis, kam Zweig odešel z nacisty devastované Evropy, objevil Montaignovy dvousvazkové eseje, v jejichž autorovi nalezl mistra a učitele rezignace a ústupu k sobě samému.

Opojenie z premeny - Stefan Zweig

Stefan Zweig (1881 - 1942) - rakúsky spisovateľ, esejista, prekladateľ, pacifista, humanista bol vášnivý zástanca zjednotenej duchovnej Európy a spolunažívania národov i kultúr. Jeho život výrazne ovplyvnili obe svetové vojny. Proti prvej sa, napriek svojmu odporu k politike, verejne postavil. Tá druhá ho zlomila a stratiac svoje ideály si vzal život.

Unknown localization key: "more"

Awkward Intelligence - Katharina A. Zweig, Noah Block-Harley

An expert offers a guide to where we should use artificial intelligence—and where we should not. Before we know it, artificial intelligence (AI) will work its way into every corner of our lives, making decisions about, with, and for us. Is this a good thing? There’s a tendency to think that machines can be more “objective” than humans—can make better decisions about job applicants, for example, or risk assessments. In Awkward Intelligence, AI expert Katharina Zweig offers readers the inside story, explaining how many levers computer and data scientists must pull for AI’s supposedly objective decision making. She presents the good and the bad: AI is good at processing vast quantities of data that humans cannot—but it’s bad at making judgments about people. AI is accurate at sifting through billions of websites to offer up the best results for our search queries and it has beaten reigning champions in games of chess and Go. But, drawing on her own research, Zweig shows how inaccurate AI is, for example, at predicting whether someone with a previous conviction will become a repeat offender. It’s no better than simple guesswork, and yet it’s used to determine people’s futures. Zweig introduces readers to the basics ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Nietzsche His Life and Works[Philosophies Ancient and Modern] (Edition2024) - Anthony M Ludovici

Friedrich Nietzsche is the central figure of this study, with a focus on his major philosophical concepts and their development. The book explores Nietzsche's contributions to existentialism, emphasizing his critique of traditional values and his profound impact on modern thought. Nietzsche's work is characterized by his use of aphorisms—concise, impactful statements that capture his philosophical insights. The book discusses his notion of the Will to Power, a central concept in Nietzsche's philosophy that reflects his view of human motivation and the drive for achievement. The idea of the Overman (Übermensch) is another key theme, representing Nietzsche's vision of a higher state of human development that transcends conventional morality and societal norms. A significant portion of the book is devoted to Nietzsche's critique of religion, particularly his rejection of Christian moral values and the concept of God. The text situates Nietzsche within the broader context of modernism, showcasing how his ideas contributed to and influenced contemporary philosophical and cultural movements. Overall, the book provides an in-depth analysis of Nietzsche's life, his revolutionary ideas, and his lasting legacy in philosophy.

Nietzsche and Architecture - Dr Lucy Huskinson

Nietzsche and Architecture explores Nietzsche''s relationship to the architects, buildings, and modern architectural movements he went on to inspire, and situates his philosophy more appropriately and comprehensively within the field of architectural studies, architectural history, and theory. Divided into two parts, the book first examines Nietzsche''s philosophy of architecture, exploring his notions of rhythm, ornament, style, and power. It then goes on to examine Nietzsche''s ambiguous architectural legacy, scrutinising iconic architects, thinkers, designs, and cultural movements to ascertain their relationship with Nietzschean ideas, from the crystal architecture of Bruno Taut and Peter Behrens, to the ''new styles'' of the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier, Louis H. Sullivan''s desire for the heights, and the cultural propaganda of ''Nazi architecture''.Clearly explaining the subtleties and complexities of Nietzsche''s architectural thought, Nietzsche and Architecture provides an accessible insight into Nietzsche''s philosophy and its significance to the development of modern architecture in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shedding vital light on the continued relevance of Nietzsche to architecture today.

The Gay Science - Friedrich Nietzsche

The book Nietzsche called "the most personal of all my books." It was here that he first proclaimed the death of God—to which a large part of the book is devoted—and his doctrine of the eternal recurrence.Walter Kaufmann''s commentary, with its many quotations from previously untranslated letters, brings to life Nietzsche as a human being and illuminates his philosophy. The book contains some of Nietzsche''s most sustained discussions of art and morality, knowledge and truth, the intellectual conscience and the origin of logic. Most of the book was written just before Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the last part five years later, after Beyond Good and Evil. We encounter Zarathustra in these pages as well as many of Nietzsche''s most interesting philosophical ideas and the largest collection of his own poetry that he himself ever published.Walter Kaufmann''s English versions of Nietzsche represent one of the major translation enterprises of our time. He is the first philosopher to have translated Nietzsche''s major works, and never before has a single translator given us so much of Nietzsche.

Beyond Good and Evil - Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche''s Beyond Good and Evil is translated from the German by R.J. Hollingdale with an introduction by Michael Tanner in Penguin Classics. Beyond Good and Evil confirmed Nietzsche''s position as the towering European philosopher of his age. The work dramatically rejects the tradition of Western thought with its notions of truth and God, good and evil. Nietzsche demonstrates that the Christian world is steeped in a false piety and infected with a ''slave morality''. With wit and energy, he turns from this critique to a philosophy that celebrates the present and demands that the individual imposes their own ''will to power'' upon the world. This edition includes a commentary on the text by the translator and Michael Tanner''s introduction, which explains some of the more abstract passages in Beyond Good and Evil. Frederich Nietzsche (1844-1900) became the chair of classical philology at Basel University at the age of 24 until his bad health forced him to retire in 1879. He divorced himself from society until his final collapse in 1899 when he became insane. A powerfully original thinker, Nietzsche''s influence on subsequent writers, such as George Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence, Thomas Mann and Jean-Paul Sartre, was considerable. If you ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Beyond Good and Evil - Friedrich Nietzsche

A deluxe, high-quality edition of Friedrich Nietzsche’s seminal work Beyond Good and Evil is one of the final books by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. This landmark work continues to be one of the most well-known and influential explorations of moral and ethical philosophy ever conceived. Expanding on the concepts from his previous work Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche adopts a polemic approach to past philosophers who, in his view, lacked critical sense in accepting flawed premises in their consideration of morality. The metaphysics of morality, Nietzsche argues, should not assume that a good man is simply the opposite of an evil man, rather merely different expression of humanity’s common basic impulses. Controversial in its time, as well as hotly debated in the present, Nietzsche’s work moves beyond conventional ethics to suggest that a universal morality for all human beings in non-existent – perception, reason and experience are not static, but change according to an individual’s perspective and interpretation. The work further argues that philosophic traditions such as “truth,” “self-consciousness” and “free will” are merely inventions of Western morality and that the “will to power” is the real driving force of all human behaviour. The Birth of Tragedy and The Case of Wagner - Friedrich Nietzsche

Two representative and important works in one volume by one of the greatest German philosophers. The Birth of Tragedy (1872) was Nietzsche''s first book. Its youthful faults were exposed by Nietzsche in the brilliant "Attempt at a Self-Criticism" which he added to the new edition of 1886. But the book, whatever its excesses, remains one of the most relevant statements on tragedy ever penned. It exploded the conception of Greek culture that was prevalent down through the Victorian era, and it sounded themes developed in the twentieth century by classicists, existentialists, psychoanalysts, and others. The Case of Wagner (1888) was one Nietzsche''s last books, and his wittiest. In attitude and style it is diametrically opposed to The Birth of Tragedy. Both works transcend their ostensible subjects and deal with art and culture, as well as the problems of the modern age generally. Each book in itself gives us an inadequate idea of its author; together, they furnish a striking image of Nietzsche''s thought. The distinguished translations by Walter Kaufmann superbly reflect in English Nietzsche''s idiom and the vitality of his style. Professor Kaufmann has also furnished running footnote commentaries, relevant passages from Nietzsche''s correspondence, a bibliography, and, for the first time in any ... Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morality - Robert Guay

On the Genealogy of Morality has become the most common point of entry into NietzscheÂ’s thought. It offers relatively straightforward, sustained explanatory narratives addressing many of the main ideas of NietzscheÂ’s mature thought, such as will to power, nihilism, perspectivism, the value of truth and the critique of morality. At the same time, it is challenging to understand because Nietzsche intended it as an expansion and elaboration of his existing ideas. Robert Guay provides the interpretive and philosophical context to help new readers of Nietzsche understand both the book and Nietzsche''s thought more widely. He shows how NietzscheÂ’s narratives engage with philosophical issues about agency, self-knowledge, historical explanation and the critique of morality.

Audiokniha: Strhující drama o lásce, nenávisti a vůli. Jeden z bestselerových románů prominentního amerického psychoterapeuta nás přivádí do Vídně 19. století, do kolébky psychoanalýzy. Unknown localization key: "more"

How Nietzsche Came in From the Cold - Philipp Felsch

Nietzsche’s reputation, like much of Europe, lay in ruins in 1945. Giving a platform to a philosopher venerated by the Nazis was not an attractive prospect for Germans eager to cast off Hitler’s shadow. It was only when two ambitious antifascist Italians, Giorgio Colli and Mazzino Montinari, began to comb through the archives that anyone warmed to the idea of rehabilitating Nietzsche as a major European philosopher. Their goal was to interpret Nietzsche’s writings in a new way and free them from the posthumous falsification of his work. The problem was that 10,000 barely legible pages were housed behind the Iron Curtain in the German Democratic Republic, where Nietzsche had been officially designated an enemy of the state. In 1961, Montinari moved from Tuscany to the home of actually existing socialism to decode the “real” Nietzsche under the watchful eyes of the Stasi. But he and Colli would soon realize that the French philosophers making use of their edition were questioning the idea of the authentic text and of truth itself. Felsch retraces the journey of the two Italian editors and their edition, telling a gripping and unlikely story of how one of Europe’s most controversial philosophers was resurrected from ... Twilight of the Idols with The Antichrist and Ecce Homo - Friedrich Nietzsche

Translated by Antony M. Ludovici. With an Introduction by Ray Furness. The three works in this collection, all dating from Nietzsche''s last lucid months, show him at his most stimulating and controversial: the portentous utterances of the prophet (together with the ill-defined figure of the Übermensch) are forsaken, as wit, exuberance and dazzling insights predominate, forcing the reader to face unpalatable insights and to rethink every commonly accepted ''truth''. Thinking with Nietzsche, in Jaspers'' words, means holding one''s own against him, and we are indeed refreshed and challenged by the vortex of his thoughts, by concepts which test and probe. In The Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist, and Ecce Homo Nietzsche writes at breakneck speed of his provenance, his adversaries and his hopes for mankind; the books are largely epigrammatic and aphoristic, allowing this poet-philosopher to bewilder and fascinate us with their strangeness and their daring. He who fights with monsters, Nietzsche once told us, should look to it that he himself does not become one, and when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you. Reader, beware.

Beyond Good and Evil - Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical work Beyond Good and Evil questions conventional morality and intellectual assumptions. According to Nietzsche, conventional morality, which is founded on cultural and religious conventions, is constrictive and inhibits people from completely expressing who they really are. According to Nietzsche's "will to power" theory, people naturally want to use their power and influence to influence others. He also presents the notion of the "superman," a mythical being free to choose their own moral standards and transcend conventional morality. Nietzsche criticises standard philosophical notions like the concept of truth and the notion of free will throughout the whole book. He contends that reality is relative and dependent on one's viewpoint, and that free will is an illusion produced by our need for control. While Beyond Good and Evil is difficult to read, it is nonetheless a significant contribution to contemporary philosophy. It inspires people to reconsider their convictions and look for a more genuine and satisfying existence outside of conventional cultural conventions.

Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path - Connie Zweig

Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves, to awaken to our unity with all of life. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow, those unconscious aspects of ourselves that we suppress or deny, or the shadows of our teachers and their secret desires about money, sex, and power. Meeting the shadow can derail the journey but, according to Connie Zweig, Ph.D., we can recover from loss of faith and move from spiritual naiveté to spiritual maturity. Zweig examines the yearning that sets us on the path, showing how it can lead to ecstatic, transcendent experiences or to terrible suffering by projecting it onto an authoritarian teacher, priest, or guru who abuses power. She tells the stories of renowned teachers--Sufi poet Rumi, Hindu master Ramakrishna, and Christian saint Catherine of Siena--whose lives unfolded as they followed their spiritual yearning. And she tells the cautionary tales of contemporary teachers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Catholicism, who acted out their shadows in devastating ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost. She explains how meeting the shadow is a painful but inevitable stage on the path to ... Unknown localization key: "more"

The Great Philosophers: Nietzsche - Ronald Hayman

''God is dead'', announced Nietzsche - before going on to abolish himself.Envious contemporaries of Nietzsche ridiculed him as a mad man - and yet they came closer than they knew in characterising a philosopher in whose thought ambivalence approximated to disintegration of the self. While the nineteenth century''s coherent, consistent systems of certainty came crashing down ingloriously at the very first touch of the twentieth, Nietzsche''s discourses survived. He was more modern, it seemed, than the moderns. In this stimulating and provocative guide, Hayman reveals how Nietzsche''s work is more contemporary and relevant than ever in a new postmodern age.

The Anti-Christ - Friedrich Nietzsche

Here is Friedrich Nietzsche's great masterpiece The Anti-Christ, wherein Nietzsche attacks Christianity as a blight on humanity. This classic is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand Nietzsche and his place within the history of philosophy. "We should not deck out and embellish Christianity: it has waged a war to the death against this higher type of man, it has put all the deepest instincts of this type under its ban, it has developed its concept of evil, of the Evil One himself, out of these instincts-the strong man as the typical reprobate, the 'outcast among men.' Christianity has taken the part of all the weak, the low, the botched; it has made an ideal out of antagonism to all the self-preservative instincts of sound life; it has corrupted even the faculties of those natures that are intellectually most vigorous, by representing the highest intellectual values as sinful, as misleading, as full of temptation. The most lamentable example: the corruption of Pascal, who believed that his intellect had been destroyed by original sin, whereas it was actually destroyed by Christianity!" -Friedrich Nietzsche

Tracing the connections between the existentialist philosophies of Nietzsche and Sartre, Nik Farrell Fox provides new readings attuned to questions of the self, politics and ethics. From their earliest to final writings, Fox brings into critical view the full trajectory of their lives and philosophy to reveal the underexplored parallels that connect them. Through engaging with new Nietzsche and Sartre studies as authoritative strands of interpretation, this book identifies both philosophers as twin thinkers of a deconstructive and paradoxical logic. Fox further re-examines their work in light of contemporary debates concerning posthumanism, vibrant materialism, quantum theory and speculative realism. The Parallel Philosophies of Sartre and Nietzsche presents two iconic existentialists as thoroughly contemporary thinkers whose complex, rich, and sometimes-ambiguous philosophy, can illuminate our present posthuman reality.

The Birth of Tragedy / Unpublished Basel Writings (Winter 1869/70–Fall 1873) - Friedrich Nietzsche

During his early years in Basel, as professor of classical philology, Nietzsche develops an original understanding of ancient Greek poetry, philosophy, and culture, alongside a biting critique of contemporary German society and a call for its reform. These years see him publish his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, where tragic drama is understood as the harmonizing of Apollonian and Dionysian drives. In it, Nietzsche traces the rise of tragedy as an art form, diagnoses its demise at the hands of Socratic rationalism, and champions its revival in Wagnerian music drama, as part of a larger project of German national renewal. The unpublished texts gathered here allow us to see tThe Birth of Tragedy within the larger context of Nietzsche's concerns at this time and chart the compositional and interpretive development of that first book while revealing some roads not taken. Included also are three book-length projects: On the Future of Our Educational Institutions, a literary presentation of a program for sweeping educational reform in the name of producing the genius; Five Prefaces to Five Unwritten Books, a set of short philosophical, cultural, and historical interventions; and Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks, an investigation of early Greek ...
