Když mu bylo šestnáct, zemřel car Alexander a děkabristé se pokusili využít historické příležitosti: omezit samoděržaví ústavou. Jejich povstání však bylo krutě potlačené a nový car Mikuláš I. nastolil mnohaleté období útisku a zpátečnictví. Životy spisovatelů Gribojedova, Puškina, Lermontova, Gogola, Dostojevského a mnoha jiných jsou dokladem, jak každá samostatná myšlenka musela narazit na zeď tupé autority. O Mikulášovi I. se vypravuje, že dostal na stůl jakousi úřední zprávu náhodou končící slovem pokrok. Připsal k ní: Pokrok? Jaký pokrok? Vymýtit toto slovo z úředního jazyka. A přesto spisovatel a filosof A. I. Gercen o této době řekl, že navenek se otročilo, ale uvnitř se lidé osvobozovali . S myšlenkami děkabristického povstání byla tak či onak spjata celá literární generace; vznikl literární proud, který chtěl být analyzujícím, ale velmi rychle byl nazván obviňujícím. A do něho se zařadil i Gogol. Jeho dvě hry (Ženitba a Revizor), jak poznamenal Bohumil Mathesius, vlastně nemají hrdinu - jsou to pohledy do celé společnosti a jejího způsobu života. Revizor vznikl v roce 1836 a vzbudil takové pozdvižení, že autor raději opustil Rusko a řadu příštích let prožil v cizině. Věc však měla pikantní pozadí: provozování Revizora povolil sám car a pochopil ho tak málo, že se při představení smál, až slzel... Po Revizorovi se Gogol pustil do práce na svém vrcholném díle, na románu Mrtvé duše. Uveřejnil ho v roce 1842 a - opět dle Gercena - otřásl celým Ruskem . Ale tíha doby nakonec umělce přece jenom zlomila. V roce 1847 uveřejnil výbor ze svých dopisů, kde pod vlivem slavjanofilství a pasivního náboženství obhajoval starý řád a dokonce omlouval nelidské nevolnictví. Nakonec však i svým pádem dal podnět k události, která byla pro duchovní vývoj Ruska neobyčejně podnětná. Na výbor z korespondence odpověděl Bělinskij - žil tou dobou také v zahraničí - slavným Listem Gogolovi . List se šířil v opisech po celém Rusku, vzdělaní lidé se mu učili zpaměti, Dostojevskij a Petraševskij šli za jeho předčítání na Sibiř - ale stal se živým programem pokrokového Ruska. Johann Wolfgang Goethe se narodil 1749 jako syn frankfurtského měšťana a zemřel 1832 jako výmarský dvořan a - po obrovskou část vzdělané Evropy - jako vladař tehdejšího literárního Olympu. Engels vystihl, jak se celý jeho život i myšlení pohybuje mezi těmito dvěma póly: Neustále v něm bojuje geniální básník, jemuž se hnusí ubohost prostředí, s obezřetným synáčkem frankfurtského radního, respektive výmarským tajným radou, který se cítí nucen uzavřít s touto ubohostí příměří a zvyknout si na ni. A tak je Goethe hned obrovský, hned maličký... Ale právě tak, jako jeho život byl věrným odrazem doby vzestupu měšťáctva až k osvobozující francouzské revoluci (Goethe ji přivítal slovy: Z tohoto místa a od tohoto dne začíná nová epocha lidských dějin ), čerpal i jeho způsob myšlení přímo nenasytně z nových myšlenkových proudů, především z obrovského rozvoje všeobecného vzdělání a z rozkvětu přírodních věd, jímž se za jeho života otevřely nedozírné perspektivy. Závrať z vědění, z moci, která je s ním spojena, z mravní odpovědnosti, kterou s sebou přináší (jak aktuální myšlenka právě v našem atomovém věku!), přerod člověka vědoucího v člověka jednajícího - to jsou otázky, které přiměly básníka blížícího se už šedesátce, sáhnout postavě německého učence a dobrodruha z počátku šestnáctého století a postavit ji do středu svého největšího díla. Dramatické napětí faustovské otázky objevila literatura už dávno předtím; Fausta učinil hrdinou svého dramatu Shakespearův současník Christopher Marlowe, psali o něm Lessisng, Lenau, v nové době Thomas Mann, a svědectvím o tom, jak živelně naléhavé je Faustovo drama, jsou i nesčíslná zpracování jeho osudu v lidových knížkách a hrách. Velikost a jedinečnost Goethova dramatu spočívá však především v tom, že je filosofickou otázkou položenou společností v době, kdy opojena vítězným optimismem stanula na prahu éry, jejíž stíny ještě nedovedla předvídat. Moliere, vlastním jménem Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673), žil za vlády Ludvíka XIV., dokonce u jeho dvora, v době, kdy ve Francii dosáhl feudalismus vrcholu stability a země se stala nejmocnějším a nejblahobytnějším evropským státem. Alespoň na povrchu - protože ve světě ducha a myšlení už dávno existovaly proudy, které neměly se středověkým myšlením nic společného, které ukazovaly dopředu do doby, jež se teprve měla zrodit. Na Moliera měl vliv zvláště jeden z těchto myslitelů, Pierre Gassendi, matematik, fyzik a filosof, který jako jeden z prvních postavil proti středověkému podžizování se autoritám nárok zdravého lidského rozumu, nárok na to, aby člověk svým rozumem sám poznával a odpovědně rozhodoval, co je pravda. Jako hudební skladatel rozvíjí symfonické téma. Příběh u něho zastupuje hnací síla básnické obrazotvornosti. U Gogola se psychologie rodí ze situace, obdobně jako v starých lidových hrách a jarmarečních podívaných, kam se obracel i Puškin.... Gogolova satira nastavuje zrcadlo všemu nelidskému. Vypovídá o vnitřní síle autorově, staví diváka, čtenáře i posluchače před okamžikem pravdy . Popriščin pozbývá rozumu uprostřed kompromisu mezi egoismem touhy a omezeností moci. Zpřístupnění textu Weilovy disertace tak umožňuje z nové perspektivy vnímat i Weilovo beletristické dílo. Zároveň některé poznatky a úvahy, jež se staly součástí disertace, Weil uplatnil ještě před jejím sepsáním v přehledových studiích o ruské literatuře, jež byly zveřejňovány v periodikách a jež jsou součástí svazků Spisů 1, 3 a 8.
