Patřila k poslední generaci indických žen, u nichž se školní docházka považovala za nepatřičnost; číst a psát se naučila od matky. Navazuje na domácí kořeny, především na prozaické dílo Rabíndranátha Thákura, a to nejen bohatým jazykem, ale hlavně nezpochybňujícím humanismem. K thákurovskému klasickému odtažitému (a mužskému) postoji, jenž lidské bolesti monumentalizoval a poetizoval, vytvořila současný (a ženský) protiklad: věcný pohled zblízka, zaměřený na detail, obyčejnost, každodennost. Celý život prožila v tradiční hinduistické velkorodině a rodinné vztahy jsou také dominantním tématem její tvorby. V mikrosvětě rodiny objevila zákonitosti lidského soužití platné i pro celospolečenský makrosvět. Do zahraničí proniká její dílo jen omezeně především pro těsnou závislost na indickém hinduistickém prostředí se spoustou reálií. Právě to, co by bylo pro neindické čtenáře "exotické" a tedy přitažlivé, je pro překlad velmi obtížné.
