Prague in the early twentieth century was the city of cubists, surrealists, and the Good Soldier vejk. This book takes a new approach to interwar Prague by identifying religion as an integral part of the city s cultural history. As Prague emerged as a modern city and the Czech nation gained independence, Catholics, Protestants, and those who imagined a non-sectarian religion debated questions of faith and morality. Contrary to the conventional view of modern Czech elites as atheistic, Berglund shows how they were deeply concerned with the place of religion in modern life.Based upon a wide array of sources, the monograph explores the linkages between politics, theology, and architecture in the building of new symbols and a civil religion for the first Czechoslovak republic (1918-1938). Berglund views the contest of the sacred and secular in Prague within the broader context of religious change in twentieth-century Europe. His book lays a foundation for understanding both Czech culture of the interwar period as well as the nation s and Europe s religious history in the modern age. The author takes an approach that is both interdisciplinary and biographical by focusing on important figures in the politics and culture of interwar Prague, including Tomá Masaryk, the philosopher who became Czechoslovakia s first president; his daughter Alice, founding director of the Czechoslovak Red Cross; and Joze Plecnik, the Slovenian architect who directed the renovations of Prague Castle and designed one of the city s most renowned churches. Based on period documents and photography, the book maps in detail the development of Czech non-university sciences from the 18th century when the Society of Unknown Scholars in the Austrian Lands was founded in Olomouc. The main attention is focused on the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and its most important precursors, whether the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, active in 1953-1992, or earlier institutions, such as the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts (originally the Emperor Franz Joseph Czech Academy for Sciences, Literature and Arts), founded in 1890, or the Royal Bohemian Society of Learning, which existed already from the 18th century. Individual chapters are devoted also to Masaryk Academy of Labour and the main scientific institutions of the Germans living in the Czech lands - Gesellschaft zur Förderung Deutscher Wissenschaft, Kunst und Literatur in Böhmen (Society for the Support of German Sciences, Arts and Literature in Bohemia). Attention is, however, also devoted to our most important scientists with whose research results as well as the milieu in which they worked and work the reader is acquainted with through archival and contemporary sources. Dôraz je v tejto publikácii kladený na vývoj práva na území štátov Vyšehradskej štvorky ako území doteraz zaznávanom predstaviteľmi prúdu porovnávacích právnych dejín či európskych právnych dejín. Vzájomná historická previazanosť skúmaných štátov sa prejavuje v ich podobnej právnohistorickej skúsenosti, čiastočne odlišnej od západoeurópskeho vývoja práva. Publikácia približuje vybrané príznaky právnych dejín spoločné štátom v tomto regióne, a to najmä v podobe pomerne neskoršej kristianizácie práva v období raného stredoveku, v podobe historickoprávnej skúsenosti s byzantským právnym vplyvom v rámci cyrilometodskej misie, ale tiež spočívajúce v zachovávaní domácich právnych tradícií s pomerne slabšou romanizáciou práva v období vrcholného stredoveku a v novoveku či v odlišnom chápaní feudálneho zriadenia v porovnaní so západnou Európou. Osobitnou spoločnou východoeurópskou skúsenosťou sú potom v 20. storočí rozsiahle zásahy do vlastníckych pomerov (pozemkové reformy, konfiškácie, znárodnenia), prudké štátoprávne premeny a viacnásobné zmeny hraníc v tejto časti Európy, či napokon doteraz badateľný vplyv sovietskych právnych vzorov. Jedinečnou je v tejto súvislosti tiež právna skúsenosť s opakovanými spoločenskými prechodmi medzi totalitou a demokraciou, v recentnom období spojená, navyše, s výzvami europeizácie a globalizácie práva. Všetky uvedené jedinečné skúsenosti spájajú štáty stredovýchodnej Európy a ovplyvňujú ich príbuznú právnu identitu a kultúru, často dostatočne nepochopenú mimo tohto regiónu. Mladí bývají neklidní. S Natálií Kocábovou (1984) tomu nebylo jinak: prvotina v osmnácti, ve třiadvaceti pět knížek. K tomu sex, drogy a rock'n'roll. Kdysi jsem o ní napsal do Respektu: Rychle napsat, rychle vydat - a další.
