V roce 1971 byl odsouzen Vyšším vojenským soudem z Tábora k deseti měsícům nepodmíněně za trojí hanobení podle §§ 102, 103, 104 a 198 trestního zákona (šlo však o pravdivou kritiku režimu a sovětské okupace), byl mu odebrán snížený příspěvek za službu a byl degradován z podplukovníka na vojína. Text knihy Mříže a smích napsal "jako svědectví o půlroku svého života" v komunistickém vězení. V letech 2008-2010 autor doplnil pojednání Z politického humoru (Od antiky po dnešek). Tímto textem útočícím satiricky na autoritářské a totalitní režimy (i na kazy demokracie) jako by to autor svým věznitelům aspoň zčásti oplatil. Takže oba texty tvoří jakousi organickou "jednotu protikladů". V tomto poutavém dílku se navíc v neobyčejně vzácné shodě potkávají poetika literární s kreslířskou poetikou Vladimíra Renčína.
