Podobně jako jeho romány se i povídky zabývají především mezilidskými vztahy, velice často však bývají okořeněny jiskřivým humorem, komikou, satirou. Klíčovými postavami bývají ženy středního věku, jež při své složité psychice obtížně hledají pochopení okolí, a současně muži, kteří pro svou omezenost a samolibost, případně pohodlnost a nedostatečnou vnímavost takového pochopení nejsou schopni. Policejně byl zakázán a ještě v roce 1960 se nakladatelství Penguin Books ocitlo na lavici obžalovaných, když knihu vydalo. V proslulém soudním procesu, v němž na obranu Lawrencova románu vystoupila řada věhlasných spisovatelů a literárních vědců, byl román shledán nevinným a zbaven nařčení z pornografie. Je pravda, že autor líčí erotické scény s velkou otevřeností. Nejsou však samoúčelné. Jde o společenský román o lidských vztazích na přelomu dvou epoch, s důrazem na hluboký a pravdivý erotický vztah mezi mužem a ženou, který má vliv na emancipaci člověka a společnosti.
