Women in Love - David Herbert Lawrence
Introduction and Notes by Dr Jeff Wallace, University of Glamorgan.Lawrence s finest, most mature novel initially met with disgust and incomprehension. In the love affairs of two sisters, Ursula with Rupert, and Gudrun with Gerald, critics could only see a sorry tale of sexual depravity and philosophical obscurity. Women in Love is, however, a profound response to a whole cultural crisis. The progress of the modern industrialised world had led to the carnage of the First World War.What, then, did it mean to call ourselves human ? On what grounds could we place ourselves above and beyond the animal world? What are the definitive forms of our relationships - love, marriage, family, friendship - really worth? And how might they be otherwise? Without directly referring to the war, Women in Love explores these questions with restless energy. As a sequel to The Rainbow, the novel develops experimental techniques which made Lawrence one of the most important writers of the Modernist movement.

Women in Love - David Herbert Lawrence
First encountered in Lawrenceâ ™s novel The Rainbow, sisters Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen are now grown-up women living in the English Midlands at the time of the First World War. Each becomes involved in a love affair: Ursula with the misanthropic intellectual Rupert Birkin, and Gudrun with Gerald Crich, a successful industrialist. The contrast between the two relationships â “ the former happy and fulfilling, the latter tempestuous and violent â “ facilitates an examination of both the regenerative and destructive aspects of human passion, while the novelâ ™s Alpine climax is revelatory of the intensity of close male friendship.Heavily revised by the author in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the controversy surrounding the publication of The Rainbow, which had been suppressed on grounds of obscenity, Women in Love appeared first in the US in 1920, with a British edition following the next year. Straddling the boundary between nineteenth-century realism and modernism, it was regarded by Lawrence as his most accomplished work, and is considered by many to be the authorâ ™s masterpiece.

Lawrenceovy názory si vysloužily mnoho nepřátel a během druhé poloviny svého života snášel pronásledování, cenzuru a zkreslování své tvůrčí práce.

The Complete Poems of D.H. Lawrence - David Herbert Lawrence
With an Introduction and Notes by David Ellis, University of Kent at Canterbury.Lawrence s reputation as a novelist has often meant that his achievements in poetry have failed to receive the recognition they deserve. This edition brings together, in a form he himself sanctioned, his Collected Poems of 1928, the unexpurgated version of Pansies, and Nettles, adding to these volumes the contents of the two notebooks in which he was still writing poetry when he died in 1930.It therefore allows the reader to trace the development of Lawrence as a poet and appreciate the remarkable originality and distinctiveness of his achievement. Not all the poems reprinted here are masterpieces but there is more than enough quality to confirm Lawrence s status as one of the greatest English writers of the twentieth century.

The Rainbow - David Herbert Lawrence
With an Introduction and Notes by Lionel Kelly, University of Reading. In 1915, Lawrence s frank representation of sexuality in The Rainbow caused a furore and the novel was seized by the police and banned almost as soon as it was published. Today it is recognised as one of the classic English novels of the twentieth century. The Rainbow is about three generations of the Brangwen family of Nottinghamshire from the 1840s to the early years of the twentieth century. Within this framework Lawrence s essential concern is with the passional lives of his characters as he explores the pressures that determine their lives, using a religious symbolism in which the rainbow of the title is his unifying motif. His primary focus is on the individual s struggle to growth and fulfilment within marriage and changing social circumstances, a process shown to grow more difficult through the generations. Young Ursula Brangwen, whose story is continued in Women in Love, is finally the central figure in Lawrence s anatomy of the confining structures of English social life and the impact of industrialisation and urbanisation on the human psyche.

Jako by Ursula s Birkinem a Gudrun s Geraldem ztělesňovali typickou lawrenceovskou polaritu lásky a nenávisti, vzniku a zániku, života a smrti, tvoření a ničení stupňovaného až k sebezničení.

Milenec lady Chatterleyové - David Herbert Lawrence - audiokniha

In their ground-breaking book, clinical psychologist Cindy Meston and evolutionary psychologist David Buss investigate the underlying sexual desires of women and identify 237 distinct motivations for sex. Drawing on more than a thousand intensive interviews conducted solely for the book, as well as their pioneering research on physiological response and evolutionary emotions, Meston and Buss give us a remarkably complex and nuanced portrait of female sexuality. They explore the use of sex as a defensive tactic against a man s infidelity (protection), as a ploy to boost self-confidence (status), as a barter for gifts (resource acquisition), or even as a cure for a headache (medication). Why Women Have Sex explores the deep-seated psychology and biology of female sexuality, and promises to inform every woman s - and her partner s - awareness of her relationship to sex and her own sexuality.

Women in Power - kolektiv autorů
Classical stories about women who wield power, from the Amazons to Dido to CleopatraIn this fascinating anthology, ancient women threaten male power by stepping into the roles traditionally held by men. They command armies, exercise sexual autonomy, speak in public, issue laws and subject others (even masculine heroes and citizen men) to their control. All of these stories were written by men and none of them can be read as affirmations or celebrations of women in power. Instead, their sexist attitudes continue to justify womenâ ™s exclusion from power.Yet despite the fear and suspicion the male authors direct toward these women, we can find much to admire in their tales, from the coordinated action of the women of Aristophanesâ ™s Assemblywomen, to the righteous anger of Boudicca against sexual violence by men in power, to the successful resistance of Amanirenas against Romeâ ™s colonial expansion. Read differently, these tales testify to the long history of women in power and suggest new paths for female empowerment.

The Women in the Room - Nan Sloane
In February 1900 a group of men representing trade unionists, socialists, Fabians and Marxists gathered in London to make another attempt at establishing an organisation capable of getting working-class men elected to Parliament. The body they set up was the Labour Representation Committee; six years later when 29 of its candidates were elected to the House of Commons, it changed its name to the Labour Party. No women took part in that first meeting, but several watched from the public gallery. Amongst them was Isabella Ford, an active socialist and trade unionist who would have been familiar to most of the men assembled below. She had been asked by her friend, Millicent Fawcett, to attend and report back on what happened. A few years later she would become the first woman to speak at a Labour Party conference, moving a resolution on votes for women but, at the Partyâ ™s inception in 1900, she and every other woman in the hall was silent.Throughout Labourâ ™s history, even in its earliest years, women were present in the room, but they were not always recorded or remembered. They came from many different backgrounds and they worked for the causes they believed in as organisers, campaigners, negotiators, polemicists, public speakers and leaders. They took on the vested interests of their time; sometimes they won. Yet the vast majority of them have been forgotten by the Labour movement that they helped to found. Even Margaret Bondfield, who became Britainâ ™s first woman cabinet minister, often barely merits a footnote. Women made real and substantial contributions to Labourâ ™s earliest years and had a significant impact on the Partyâ ™s ability to attract and maintain womenâ ™s votes after World War I. In addition to Margaret and Isabella, in many of the rooms in which the Labour Party found its feet, remarkable women wait to be rediscovered. This book tells their story.

The publication presents the topic of women in architecture in the second half of the 20th century from the point of view of architectural history, as well as in an interdisciplinary context from the perspective of sociology, general history and gender studies. It focuses on the circumstances of the practice and education of women architects, the interconnection of professional and family life, as well as the reflection and recognition of the work of women architects and the principles of the historiography of the field viewed through a gender perspective. The book s expert studies are complemented by an annotated pictorial appendix, which presents a wide range of works and activities of women active in the architectural sphere - from project and design work through research, theoretical, historiographic, curatorial or pedagogical work to criticism and promotion of architecture. The publication also includes a list of surnames of women whose creative careers have been touched by our research. Its purpose is to draw attention to the theme of the transformation of female surnames making the process of attribution more difficult. At the same time, this list is an important tool for tracing the continuity of the work of the women creators mentioned. Women in the Picture - McCormack Catherine
A perfect pin-up, a damsel in distress, a saintly mother, a femme fatale ...Women s identity has long been stifled by a limited set of archetypes, found everywhere in pictures from art history s classics to advertising, while women artists have been overlooked and held back from shaping more empowering roles. In this impassioned book, art historian Catherine McCormack asks us to look again at what these images have told us to value, opening up our most loved images - from those of Titian and Botticelli to Picasso and the Pre-Raphaelites. She also shows us how women artists - from Berthe Morisot to Beyoncé, Judy Chicago to Kara Walker - have offered us new ways of thinking about women s identity, sexuality, race and power.Women in the Picture gives us new ways of seeing the art of the past and the familiar images of today so that we might free women from these restrictive roles and embrace the breadth of women s vision.

Women in Victorian Society - Anne Louise Booth
Nineteenth-century women in British society may have seemed governed by a patriarchal model that reserved power and privilege for men, but women gradually and persuasively challenged not only the ideas of â ˜separate spheres of societyâ ™ but the influence of Queen Victoria herself.Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, case studies and character portraits, Anne Louise Booth explores the character and influence of the Victorian society woman in both town and country. By examining defining moments in history and the roles these women played in shaping and redefining society, the changing world of the Victorian society woman is brought vividly to life.Seeking to understand women as individuals in the context of their world, and developing a complete picture of a changing social landscape, Anne Louise Booth paints a compelling and illuminating portrait of the lives of women in Victorian society.

Women in the Scottish Wars of Independence 1296â
The Scottish Wars of Independence are often celebrated for the heroic deeds of men, but behind the scenes, noblewomen played an equally pivotal role in shaping the nationâ ™s fate. In Women in the Scottish Wars of Independence, Beth Reid brings to life the stories of these remarkable women, from royalty to influential landowners, whose contributions to Scotlandâ ™s turbulent history have long been overlooked. From noblewomen like Isabella MacDuff, Agnes Randolph, and Agnes Comynâ ”who made kings, defended castles, and led conspiraciesâ ”to royal women who influenced key decisions and defined dynasties, this book paints a vivid picture of resilience, strategy, and courage. Through chronicles, royal charters, and material culture, Reid uncovers how these women navigated war and politics, revealing their critical yet underappreciated roles in shaping the outcomes of the Wars of Independence. Focusing on noblewomen rather than ordinary lives, this book offers a fresh perspective on a male-dominated narrative, shedding light on the influential partnerships and actions of women who stood at the heart of Scotland s history. With meticulous research and compelling storytelling, Women in the Scottish Wars of Independence is essential reading for history enthusiasts eager to explore the often-untold contributions of Scotlandâ ™s noblewomen during one of its most formative periods.

Difficult Women: A History of Feminism in 11 Fights (1784709735)
Kniha - autor Helen Lewis, 320 stran, anglicky, brožovaná bez přebalu matná Well-behaved women don't make history: difficult women do. Feminism's success is down to complicated, contradictory, imperfect women, who fought each other as well as fighting for equal rights. Helen Lewis argues that too many of these pioneers have been whitewashed or forgotten in our modern search for feel-good, inspirational heroines. It's time to reclaim the history of feminism as a history of difficult women. In this book, you'll meet the working-class suffragettes who advocated bombings and arson; the princess who discovered why so many women were having bad sex; the pioneer of the refuge movement who became a men's rights activist; the 'striker in a sari' who terrified Margaret Thatcher; the wronged Victorian wife who definitely wasn't sleeping with the prime minister; and the lesbian politician who outraged the country. Taking the story up to the present with the...

Women in Dark Times - Jacqueline Rose
Women in Dark Times begins with three remarkable women: revolutionary socialist Rosa Luxemburg; German-Jewish painter Charlotte Salomon; and film icon Marilyn Monroe. The story of these women, bound together by their struggles against iniquity, blazes a trail across some of the defining features of the twentieth century â “ revolution, totalitarianism and the American dream â “ and compels us to reckon with the unspeakable. Bringing to the surface the subterranean depths of history and the human mind that dominant political vocabularies cannot bear to face, pioneering critic and public intellectual Jacqueline Rose forges a new language for feminism. Extending her argument into the present, Rose turns her focus to â ˜honourâ ™ killings and celebrates contemporary artists whose work grows out of an unflinching engagement with all that is darkest in the modern world. Women in Dark Times, reissued a decade after its original publication, offers a template for a scandalous feminism, one which confronts all that is most recalcitrant and unsettling in the struggle to create a better world.

Advancing Research on Chronic Conditions in Women
Women in the United States experience a higher prevalence of many chronic conditions, including Alzheimer s disease, depression, and osteoporosis, than men; they also experience female-specific conditions, such as endometriosis and pelvic floor disorders. A lack of research into both the biological and social factors that influence these conditions greatly hinders diagnosis, treatment, and prevention efforts, thus contributing to poorer health outcomes for women and substantial costs to individuals and for society. The National Institutes of Health s Office of Research on Women s Health asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene an expert committee to identify gaps in the science on chronic conditions that are specific to or predominantly impact women, or affect women differently, and propose a research agenda. The committee s report presents their conclusions and recommendations.

In Sea and Sardina, Lawrence brings to life the vigorous spontaneity of a society as yet untouched by the deadening effect of industrialization. And Etruscan Places is a beautiful and delicate work of literary art, the record of a dying man drinking from the founts of a civilization dedicated to life.

Spring Cannot be Cancelled: David Hockney in Normandy - David Hockney, Martin Gayford
David Hockney reflects upon life and art as he experiences lockdown in rural Normandy On turning eighty, David Hockney sought out rustic tranquillity for the first time: a place to watch the sunset and the change of the seasons; a place to keep the madness of the world at bay. So when Covid-19 and lockdown struck, it made little difference to life at La Grande Cour, the centuries-old Normandy farmhouse where Hockney set up a studio a year before, in time to paint the arrival of spring. In fact, he relished the enforced isolation as an opportunity for even greater devotion to his art. Spring Cannot be Cancelled is an uplifting manifesto that affirms art’s capacity to divert and inspire. It is based on a wealth of new conversations and correspondence between Hockney and the art critic Martin Gayford, his long-time friend and collaborator. Their exchanges are illustrated by a selection of Hockney’s new, unpublished Normandy iPad drawings and paintings alongside works by van Gogh, Monet, Bruegel, and others. We see how Hockney is propelled ever forward by his infectious enthusiasms and sense of wonder. A lifelong contrarian, he has been in the public eye for sixty years, yet remains entirely unconcerned by the view of critics or even history. He is utterly absorbed by his four acres of northern France and by the themes that have fascinated him for decades: light, colour, space, perception, water, trees. He has much to teach us, not only about how to see... but about how to live. With 142 illustrations in colour

Women in Design - Anne Massey
A history of women designers and consumers from 1900 to the present day. The work of women designers has not traditionally been the focus of mainstream histories of design. By revealing the untold story of female design pioneers, this comprehensive introduction celebrates their crucial role in the history of modern processes of making. Arranged chronologically, this guide considers the structural barriers to professional success and how women overcame these hurdles, charting the success of designers including Anni Albers at the Bauhaus, the architect Eileen Grey, interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe and fashion icon Mary Quant, focusing on the key subjects of architecture, craft, fashion, furniture, graphics, interior, product and textile design. The link between early twentieth-century revolutionary design and lifestyle is explored, as well the ideas of shopping and consumerism as a liberating activity. The important contribution of designers during and after the Second World War is also discussed, along with design activism, design collectives and the current success of women working transnationally in architecture and design.

A History of Women in 101 Objects - Annabelle Hirsch
A WATERSTONES BEST BOOK OF 2023This is a neglected history. Not a sweeping, definitive, exhaustive history of the world but something quieter, more intimate and particular. A journey, picked out in 101 objects, through the fascinating, too-often-overlooked, manifold histories of women.Open up this cabinet of curiosities and you ll find objects that have been highly esteemed and others that are humble and domestic. Some (like a sixteenth century glass dildo) are objects of female pleasure, some (a thumbscrew) of female subjugation. There are artefacts of women celebrated by history and of women unfairly forgotten by it; examples of female rebellion and of self-revelation; objects that are inspiring, curious or (like radium-laced chocolate) just fundamentally ill-conceived. In this compendium, Annabelle Hirsch reveals a new history - teeming, unexpected, witty and always illuminating.

Propaganda Girls: The Secret War of the Women in the OSS - Lisa Rogaková
This is the incredible untold story of four women who helped win World War II by generating a wave of black propaganda.Betty MacDonald was a 28-year-old reporter from Hawaii. Zuzka Lauwers grew up in a tiny Czechoslovakian village and knew five languages by the time she was 21. Jane Smith-Hutton was the wife of a naval attaché living in Tokyo. Marlene Dietrich, the German-American actress and singer, was one of the biggest stars of the 20th century. These four women, each fascinating in her own right, together contributed to one of the most covert and successful military campaigns in WWII.Members of the Office of Strategic Services, their task was to create a secret brand of propaganda produced with the sole aim to break the morale of Axis soldiers. Working in Europe, across enemy lines in occupied China and in Washington D.C., Betty, Zuzka, Jane and Marlene forged letters and official military orders, wrote and produced entire newspapers, scripted radio broadcasts and songs and even developed rumours for undercover spies and double agents to spread to the enemy. And outside of a small group of spies, no one knew they existed. Until now.
