Protože Milenec lady Chatterleyové je možná erotický román, určitě však ne obscénní. Byť hranice mezi těmito výrazy vždy byla a bude hodně pohyblivá. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) se úspěchu své knihy nedočkal, zemřel pouhý rok po jejím prvním vydání. A vlastně by musel čekat dlouhá desetiletí, než se kniha stala součástí literárního kánonu a vysokoškolských skript, než se stala jednou z vůbec nejfilmovanějších knih, a hlavně knih nejčtenějších. Milostný příběh mladé aristokratky Constance, která si místo svého urozeného (a želbohu invalidního) manžela zvolí obyčejného hajného dnes už žádný skandál nevyvolá; stále nás však muže oslovit a dojmout - a vzrušit - nejen mimořádnými literárními kvalitami, ale především silou vášně obou milenců i samotného autora.
