V osmdesátých letech vstoupil do literatury detektivními romány (Gordický uzel, Selbův podvod a Spravedlnost podle Selba), v nichž představil omšelého soukromého detektiva Selba, který se potýká s nacionálněsocialistickou minulostí své země i svou vlastní. Ke kriminálnímu žánru se vrátil ještě v roce 2001 románem Selbova vražda. Světového úspěchu dosáhl románem Předčítač (Vorleser, 1995). Ve své další knize Návrat (Die Heimkehr, 2006), jejíž český překlad vyšel v nakladatelství PROSTOR roku 2007, spojil napínavý, takřka detektivní příběh s motivem objevování a vyrovnávání se s nacistickou minulostí.
