Na blíže neurčeném místě v České republice se v jednom luxusním hotelu setkávají čtyři přátelé z 90. let: Maďar, východní Němec, Polák a Čech. Tato skutečnost umožní všem účastníkům setkání, aby se při debatách o střední Evropě vyrovnávali nejen s tímto fenoménem, ale rovněž se svou vlastní minulostí. Na tyto leckdy mučivé pokusy nejsou sami: bedlivě je při nich sledují i zástupci mladší generace - česká recepční a synovec polského hosta -, kteří si tak aspoň jako pozorovatelé mohou lépe uvědomit, odkud vlastně sami pocházejí, a kam tedy také asi patří. Přitom se nevyhýbali tématům, o nichž jinak Bernhard s nikým nemluvil tak otevřeně a bez skrupulí, ať šlo o názory na uměleckou scénu, o honoráře, praktiky nakladatelství nebo o úzké přátelské vztahy, či dokonce o ženy. Hennetmair později poznamenal: Thomas musel něco tušit, někdy mi dokonce sám nosil dopisy a dokumenty, aniž jsme kdy na toto téma prohodili jediné slovo. Hennetmairovy zápisky líčí řadu detailů a událostí z pohledu člověka, který měl k autorovi přístup jako málokdo jiný. Rodinné scény a humor, jímž Bernhard oplýval ve chvílích, kdy se cítil v bezpečí, jsou cenným svědectvím spisovatelova soukromého života. Ve svém třetím delším prozaickém díle z roku 1970 představuje Bernhard postavu Konráda a jeho manželku upoutanou na kolečkové křeslo. Konrád před lety zakoupil opuštěnou vápenku kdesi v Rakousku a uchýlil se do ní proto, aby získal klid nezbytný pro sepsání studie o sluchu, "nejfilozofičtějším ze všech orgánů", o niž se již více než dvacet let neúspěšně pokouší. Společně se svou ženou se ve vápence zabarikáduje, izoluje se od okolního světa a připravuje se na sepsání epochální práce; ale čím víc se na ni koncentruje, chce ji konečně dostat z hlavy na papír, tím více se od ní vzdaluje. V psaní ustavičně troskotá, a tak se jako poslední akt, jenž může (nejen jeho) životu dát smysl, jeví smrt: o Vánocích, v den narození Spasitele, Konrád svou ženu zastřelí. O dva dny později nalezne policie promrzlého muže ve vyschlé žumpě; Konrád se nechává bez odporu odvést. Román Vápenka je "hledáním příčin" této smrti, příčin ztroskotání psaní, ale obsahuje také témata deprimujícího dětství, nesnesitelné každodennosti nebo děsivé idyly, kterou představuje vápenka i její obyvatelé. Konrád a jeho žena jsou pro Bernharda typickými protiklady: on dává přednost Kropotkinovi, tedy politice, ekonomii a činu, ona Novalisovi, tedy poetické existenci a kontemplaci; Konrádovo postižení duševní je protipólem tělesného postižení jeho manželky. O Konrádově světě se přitom dozvídáme z vyprávění zástupce životní pojišťovny, který skládá Konrádovy výroky z hospodských tlachů, několika osobních setkání a hlavně ze svědectví dvou správců, kteří měli ke Konrádovi nejblíže a z jejichž vyprávění je možné - alespoň částečně - rekonstruovat, co se vlastně ve vápence stalo.

Rozrušení se odehrává v krátkém období těsně před "katastrofou" a je jedním z nejpřesvědčivějších Bernhardových románů, předurčujících jeho pozdější prozaickou tvorbu.

Ice forms a hostile environment, but humans and animals have adapted to life on the ice. Indigenous peoples such as the Inuit in the Arctic have developed survival strategies over thousands of years. However, the traditional way of life of Arctic inhabitants is changing, and they are being forced to adapt. Some species such as the polar bear are threatened with extinction. This is due to climate change, which is causing temperatures to rise worldwide, particularly rapidly in the Arctic and Antarctic. As a result, glaciers are melting ever more quickly. Ice, which has always fascinated people with its bizarre beauty, is disappearing, and the effects on the environment and the economy are serious.
