Kniha mapuje vývoj Komunistické strany Řecka (KKE) od konce druhé světové války do roku 1956. Důraz je kladen na období po potlačení komunistické revolty v Řecku (1949), která vedla k přesunu vedení strany a jádra jejího členstva do socialistického exilu. Tam došlo k vytvoření Lidově demokratického Řecka, imaginární země bez vymezených hranic, v níž KKE za pomoci sesterských komunistických stran vykonávala moc nad omezeným počtem řeckých a makedonských občanů. Autor sleduje, jaký vliv měly na vedení KKE a na komunity emigrantů nejen události v době vrcholného stalinismu, ale také důležité momenty přechodného období "tání", které začalo po Stalinově smrti, vyústilo v dramatické zhuštění historického času vyjádřené oživením naděje v socialistickou budoucnost a skončilo jejím tragickým popřením. Na fenomén řeckého poválečného komunismu, zejména jeho sociální dějiny, autor nahlíží prizmatem tzv. transnacionálních dějin. Nabízí tak možnost srovnání převládajícího narativu v zemích reálného socialismu s příběhem komunismu v Řecku.
