Jane Austen
#39;Everything a reader could desire: wit, passion, mystery, brilliant detective work, a love of rare books, a deep dive into literary history and, best of all, the restoration of reputation for a group of great women authors whose names should never have been forgotten #39; Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, LovePublishing to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen #39;s birth. It all started with a book that made me curious. When rare books dealer Rebecca Romney found an emerald clothbound edition of Evelina by Frances Burney, she was happy to discover that she #39;d stumbled across a novel by one of Jane Austen #39;s favourite authors. Inspired by the connection between the two writers, she returned to Austen #39;s books with a new lens, picking out clues sprinkled throughout her works that pointed to the writers she had admired.Austen read William Shakespeare, John Milton, Daniel Defoe, and Samuel Richardson, all authors Rebecca had read. But Austen also read Frances Burney, Ann Radcliffe, Charlotte Lennox, Hannah More, Charlotte Smith, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hester Piozzi, and Maria Edgeworth, all authors Romney hadn #39;t. These female writers all sat proudly on Austen #39;s bookshelf, but have disappeared from ours.Romney became fascinated with these writers and wanted to answer three important questions: What were the stories behind the lives of these women? Why have they disappeared from our bookshelves? Who wrote them out of history? She had a mission, an obligation: she needed to collect Jane Austen #39;s bookshelf.

Jane Austen, the Secret Radical - Helena Kelly
A sublime piece of literary detective work that shows us once and for all how to be precisely the sort of reader that Austen deserves. Caroline Criado-Perez, GuardianAlmost everything we think we know about Jane Austen is wrong. Her novels don t confine themselves to grand houses and they were not written just for readers enjoyment. She writes about serious subjects and her books are deeply subversive. We just don t read her properly - we haven t been reading her properly for 200 years.Jane Austen, The Secret Radical puts that right. In her first, brilliantly original book, Austen expert Helena Kelly introduces the reader to a passionate woman living in an age of revolution; to a writer who used what was regarded as the lightest of literary genres, the novel, to grapple with the weightiest of subjects - feminism, slavery, abuse, the treatment of the poor, the power of the Church, even evolution - at a time, and in a place, when to write about such things directly was seen as akin to treason.Uncovering a radical, spirited and politically engaged Austen, Jane Austen, The Secret Radical will encourage you to read Jane, all over again.

An A-Z of Jane Austen - Michael Greaney
Jane Austen s richly textured worlds have enchanted readers for centuries and this neatly organised, playful book provides Austen enthusiasts and students alike with a unique insight into the much-loved writer s way with words. Using a lively A-Z structure, Greaney provides fresh angles on familiar Austen themes (D is for dance; M is for matchmaking), casts light on under-examined corners of her imagination (R is for risk; S is for servant), and shows how current social and cultural concerns are re-shaping our understanding of her work (Q is for queer; W is for West Indies). Through this approach, we learn how attention to the tiniest linguistic detail in Austen s work can yield rewarding new perspectives on the achievements of one of our most celebrated authors.Sharply focused on textual detail but broad in scope it broaches questions that, like Austen s work, will intrigue, delight and inspire: Why are children so marginal in her storylines? Who is the best exponent of matchmaking in her fiction? Why are many of her female characters â “ but none of her heroines â “ called Jane? Providing a new close-up encounter with one of our most celebrated writers, this book invites a renewed appreciation of the infinite subtlety and endless re-readability of a body of writing in which every word counts.

A Memoir of Jane Austen - James Austen-Leigh
With an introduction by Dr Sally MinogueJane Austen s nephew James knew her fondly as Aunt Jane when he was a child, attended her funeral in Winchester Cathedral as a young man, and wrote this memoir of her some 50 years after her death, as her fame was growing. He could not have imaged Austen s immense importance as a writer, and the curiosity about her, in today s world. That is part of the charm of James Austen-Leigh s memoir, which remains the touchstone for all later biographers. He highlights Jane s special relationship with sister Cassandra, through her letters. He shows that her writing fell into two distinct periods of creativity with a barren patch in between. An amusing passage reveals the admiration of the Prince Regent for her work, and the irony of her response. This is a touching personal account from one who actually knew this great writer of our time. It includes the fascinating cancelled chapter of Persuasion, and is accompanied by the full text of The Watsons, Lady Susan and Sanditon.

Esej o typografii - Eric Gill
