Leihabyho z Centrální školy umění a řemesel začal vyřezávat písmena a navštěvovat výuku Edwarda Johnstona. V roce 1903 odešel na volnou nohu a započal svou celoživotní dráhu jako řemeslník. V roce 1924 jej požádal Stanley Morison, aby napsal článek o typografii do typografického časopisu Fleuron. Odmítl s tím, že typografie "není jeho světem". Už v roce 1925 však Gill rozpracoval několik abeced (z jedné z nich se nakonec stala Perpetua) a také formuloval zásady, které později sebral do svého slavného "Eseje". Eric Gill měl nadání pro bezpočet věcí. Do své smrti v roce 1940 si osvojil mnoho řemesel: byl sochařem, kameníkem, rytcem, filozofem, ilustrátorem a typografem.
