Je rok 1952 a pracují spolu na ranči v Novém Mexiku kousek od hranic s Texasem a Mexikem. Oba tuší, že nadchází konec starých časů a starých zvyků, konec kovbojů, a začíná se něco nového a hrozného, neboť válka všechno změnila. John se při návštěvě bordelu v mexickém Juárezu zamiluje do prostitutky Magdaleny s dobrým srdcem a kamarád Billy mu kryje záda, neboť každá prostitutka má také pasáka, který už dobré srdce nemá. Dochází na milostné melodrama, označované za McCarthyho verzi Romea a Julie, kdy znepřátelenými rody jsou Mexičané a Američané. Silná ramena ustupují tak trochu sentimentu. I zde je však prolito hodně krve. Název knihy odkazuje na biblická města Sodomu a Gomoru, jež sešla ze světa pro svoji hříšnost.

V první části sledujeme Lesterovu postupnou a nevratnou proměnu v outsidera, vyvrhele a "účastného" pozorovatele, který se stává postrachem Frog Mountain. Druhá část se soustřeďuje na změnu ještě zdánlivě neškodného voyeura v šíleného vraha. Lester Ballard má však přesto s ostatními lidmi něco společného -nezměrnou touhu po lásce, kterou však není schopen získat a naplnit běžným způsobem. Přes všechnu hrůznost Lesterova počínání si čtenář uvědomuje, že k němu není schopen cítit pouze antipatie. Dítě Boží vychází ze skutečného případu, ke kterému došlo v Tennessee. Je zde však také všudypřítomný mýtus, posílený alegorickými prvky díla. Přestože román líčí proces postupného odcizení a totální ztrátu morálních hodnot, nutí současně čtenáře, aby hledal vysvětlení daného stavu, a to zdaleka nejen Ballardových činů. Koneckonců, Lester Ballard je jedním z nás, "dítě Boží, jako vy nebo já".
