The Road - Cormac McCarthy
The story of a nameless father and son trying to survive with their humanity intact in a postapocalyptic wasteland where Earth’s natural resources have been diminished, and some survivors are left to raise others for meat, The Road is one of Cormac McCarthy’s bleakest and most prescient novels. Dedicated to his son, John Francis McCarthy, McCarthy’s The Road is one of his most personal novels.Ranked 17th on The Guardian’s 100 Best Novels of the 21st century, it was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for literature, and the James Tait Black Memorial Award, the Believer Award, and it was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. This first official graphic novel adaptation of McCarthy’s work is illustrated by acclaimed French cartoonist Manu Larcenet, who ably transforms the world depicted by McCarthy’s spare and brutal prose into stark ink drawings that add an additional layer to this haunting tale of family love and human perseverance. Cormac McCarthy personally approved the making of this book before his death, and the adaptation bears the approval of the McCarthy estate.

The Edge of the Plain - James Crawford
SHORTLISTED FOR SCOTLAND S NATIONAL NON-FICTION BOOK AWARD 2023Today, there are more borders in the world than ever before in human history. In this book James Crawford argues that our enduring obsession with borders has brought us to a crisis point: that we are entering the endgame of a process that began thousands of years ago, when we first started dividing up the earth.Beginning with the earliest known marker which denoted the end of one land and the beginning of the next, Crawford follows the story of borders into our fragile and uncertain future - towards the virtual frontiers of the internet, and the shifting geography of a world beset by climate change. In the process, he travels to many borders old and new: from a melting border high in the glacial landscapes of the Austrian-Italian Alps to the only place on land where Europe and Africa meet; from the artist Banksy s Walled Off Hotel in the conflict-torn West Bank to the Sonoran Desert and the fault lines of the US/Mexico border.Combining history, travel and reportage, The Edge of the Plain explores how borders have grown and evolved to take control of our landscapes, our memories, our identities and our destinies. As nationalism, climate change, globalisation, technology and mass migration all collide with ever-hardening borders, something has to give. And Crawford asks, is it time to let go of the lines that divide us?

Krvavý poledník - Cormac McCarthy - audiokniha
Audiokniha: Cormac McCarthy vydal svůj pátý román, Krvavý poledník aneb Večerní červánky na západe, v roce 1985, a přestože byly kritické recenze víceméně příznivé, většinu hodnotitelů zarazila nebývalá míra násilí a pozoruhodná absence morálních zásad. Navštevoval University of Tennessee, během studií začal psát a publikovat a univerzitu nedokončil. Rukopis svého prvního románu Strážce sadu poslal do nakladatelství Random House, kde se ho ujal někdejší Faulknerův redaktor Albert Erskine, s nímž pak McCarthy spolupracoval dalších dvacet let. Konzultant - Cormac McCarthy

Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy
The wrath of God lies sleeping. It was hid a million years before men were and only men have power to wake it. Hell aint half full.Set in the anarchic world opened up by America s westward expansion, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is an epic and potent account of the barbarous violence that man visits upon man. Through the hostile landscape of the Texas-Mexico border wanders the Kid, a fourteen year-old Tennessean who is quickly swept up in the relentless tide of blood. But the apparent chaos is not without its order: while Americans hunt Indians - collecting scalps as their bloody trophies - they too are stalked as prey.Since its first publication in 1985, Blood Meridian has been read as both a brilliant subversion of the Western novel and a blazing example of that form. Powerful, mesmerizing and savagely beautiful, it is established as one of the most important works in American fiction of the last century.
McCarthyho román Pasažér v sobě pozoruhodným způsobem propojuje meditaci nad mravností, vědou a dědičným hříchem s prvky thrilleru, a činí tak s příznačně rafinovaným, oslňujícím stylem, jenž autorovi vysloužil reputaci jednoho z největších současných amerických prozaiků.

Všichni krásní koně - Cormac McCarthy
Román Všichni krásní koně je prvním dílem tzv. Hraniční trilogie a lze jej směle označit za jeden z vrcholů McCarthyho díla; autor za něj v roce 1993 prestižní National Book Award i National Book Critics Circle Award. Obdobný úspěch slavil i u čtenářů: dlouhé měsíce se držel v čele žebříčku bestellerů a dodnes patří k nejprodávanějším autorovým knihám.

The Nature of Our Cities - Nadina Galle
In the tradition of Elizabeth Kolbert and Michael Pollan, The Nature of Our Cities is a stirring exploration of how innovators from around the world are combining urban nature with emerging technologies, protecting the planet’s cities from the effects of climate change and safeguarding the health of their inhabitants. We live in an age when humanity spends 90% of its time indoors, yet the nature around us—especially in America’s cities—has never been more vital. This distancing from nature has sparked crises in mental health, longevity, and hope for the next generation, while also heightening the risks we face from historic floods, heatwaves, and wildfires. Indeed, embracing nature holds untapped potential to strengthen and fortify our cities, suburbs, and towns, providing solutions spanning flood preparation, wildfire management, and promoting longevity. As ecological engineer Dr. Nadina Galle shows in The Nature of Our Cities nature is our most critical infrastructure for tackling the climate crisis. It just needs a little help. A fellow at MIT’s Senseable City Lab and selected for Forbes’ 30 under 30 list, Galle is at the forefront of the growing movement to fuse nature and technology for urban resilience. In THE NATURE OF OUR CITIES, she embarks on a journey as fascinating as it is pressing, showing how scientists and citizens from around the world are harnessing emerging technologies to unlock the power of the natural world to save their cities, a phenomenon she calls the “Internet of Nature.” Traveling the globe, Galle examines how urban nature, long an afterthought for many, actually points the way toward a more sustainable future. She reveals how technology can help nature navigate this precarious moment with modern advances such as:Laser-mapping that identifies at-risk neighborhoods to fight deadly health disparitiesA.I.-powered robots that prevent wildfires from reaching urban areasIntelligent water gardens that protect cities from floods and hurricanesAdvanced sensors that achieve 99% tree survival in dry, hot summers Optimistic in spirit yet pragmatic in approach, Galle writes persuasively that the future of urban life depends on balancing the natural world with the technology that can help sustain it. By turns clear-eyed and lyrical, THE NATURE OF OUR CITIES marks the emergence of an invigorating, prescient new talent in nature writing.

The Death and Life of Great American Cities - Jacobs Jane
In this classic text, Jane Jacobs set out to produce an attack on current city planning and rebuilding and to introduce new principles by which these should be governed. The result is one of the most stimulating books on cities ever written. Throughout the post-war period, planners temperamentally unsympathetic to cities have been let loose on our urban environment. Inspired by the ideals of the Garden City or Le Corbusier s Radiant City, they have dreamt up ambitious projects based on self-contained neighbourhoods, super-blocks, rigid scientific plans and endless acres of grass. Yet they seldom stop to look at what actually works on the ground. The real vitality of cities, argues Jacobs, lies in their diversity, architectural variety, teeming street life and human scale. It is only when we appreciate such fundamental realities that we can hope to create cities that are safe, interesting and economically viable, as well as places that people want to live in. Perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning... Jacobs has a powerful sense of narrative, a lively wit, a talent for surprise and the ability to touch the emotions as well as the mind New York Times Book Review

The Faces of Contemporary Cities - Davide Ponzini
The story of Permasteelisa, an Italian company behind the facades of some of the most famous buildings in the world. The great global cities of the Western, Middle Eastern, and Asian world tend to resemble each other more and more. The new buildings of cities such as London, Hong Kong, New York, or Frankfurt are similar, and even the skylines increasingly seem to resemble one another. The fact that there are just a few great architects behind these constructions partly explains this phenomenon. This book reveals how the work of these architectural talents is also made possible by companies such as Permasteelisa, which offer technological solutions for constructing the most futuristic buildings. Permasteelisa produces continuous external cladding: the skin of skyscrapers, large airports, and current business centers. Drawing on its constant research into technology and materials, it collaborates with large architectural firms to transform an architectâ ™s project into a building. This was the case for the Sydney Opera House, with its futuristic sails; for the Guggenheim in Bilbao and its curved facades conceived by Frank Gehry; and for the scintillating blades of Renzo Pianoâ ™s Shard in London. The book tells the story of Permasteelisa. With the texts by international urban planning scholars and data analysis and georeferencing methodologies developed at the Transnational Architecture and Urbanism Lab (TAU-Lab) of the Politecnico di Milano, it shows how this Italian companyâ ™s know-how has allowed it to shape the faces of many contemporary cities such as New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Milan, Hong Kong, and Sydney.

Memories of a Catholic Girlhood - Mary McCarthy
Blending memories and family myths, Mary McCarthy takes us back to the 1920s, when she was orphaned into a world of relations as colourful, potent and mysterious as the Catholic religion. There was her Catholic grandmother who combined piousness with pugnacity, and her veiled Jewish grandmother who mourned the disastrous effects of a face-lift; there was wicked Uncle Myers who beat her for the good of her soul, and Aunt Margaret who laced her orange juice with castor oil, and taped her lips at night to prevent unhealthy â ˜mouth-breathingâ ™. â ˜Many a time in the course of doing these memoirs,â ™ Mary McCarthy says, â ˜I have wished that I were writing fiction.â ™ But these were the people, along with the Ladies of the Sacred Heart convent school, who inspired her engaging perception, her devastating sense of the sublime and ridiculous, and her witty, novelistâ ™s imagination. Memories of a Catholic Girlhood is a major work by one of the leading American intellectuals of the twentieth century â “ witty, scathing, piercingly insightful and stylishly written.

Stella Maris (anglicky) - Cormac McCarthy
One of the best social observers in American fiction. --John Freeman, Literary Hub Mr. Carroll s world is a little vicious, slippery in its sexuality . . . strangely reminiscent of the hootier, hard-candy end of the Tennessee Williams spectrum. It is flat-out odd, fun, and seeming true. --Padgett Powell When Cuban fishermen first spotted the Key West lighthouse floating in Florida waters, they called her Stella Maris, Star of the Sea. It s a beacon that draws people from everywhere seeking the end-of-the-line bohemian oasis that can still be found amidst the condo share towers, chain stores, and Redneck Riviera clientele. And it s a mecca for gay men and the women who love them. Sue Kaufman Prize- winning author Michael Carroll knows the territory intimately. His stories wind in and out of the bars and guesthouses and lives of this singular paradise: a memorial for a drag queen held at the vicar s Victorian leads to uneasy encounters; two southern sisters on a cruise ship holiday are up against the ravages of alcohol, estrangement, and deadly weather. Newly divorced gay men (already a phenomenon) lick their wounds and bask in the island s lasting social twilight. At the all-male, clothing-optional resort, guys of all ages fall into one another s paths, enjoy themselves as they please, and surprise one another on their views and preconceptions. Stella Maris is about the verities of illness and death. The past and its prisoners, AIDS, the young and not so young man s realization of his own mortality. It s about the unpredictable nature of life, and of survival. It s about new beginnings and final recognitions.

The Language of Cities - Deyan Sudjic
The director of the Design Museum defines the greatest artefact of all time: the cityWe live in a world that is now predominantly urban. So how do we define the city as it evolves in the twenty-first century? Drawing examples from across the globe, Deyan Sudjic decodes the underlying forces that shape our cities, such as resources and land, to the ideas that shape conscious elements of design, whether of buildings or of space. Erudite and entertaining, he considers the differences between capital cities and the rest to understand why it is that we often feel more comfortable in our identities as Londoners, Muscovites, or Mumbaikars than in our national identities.

Stéphan de Beer highlights how city and faith are in conversation and explores various expressions of Christian faith in an ever-changing urban landscape.Connecting socio-spatial change in post-apartheid South African cities with the changing Christian landscape, the connections and disconnections between Christian faith expressions and urban change are interrogated. Chapters feature wide coverage across both cities, including places like Soweto and Sandton, Sunnyside and Soshanguve, and everything in between. Examining these contexts where global migration and Christian faith increasingly co-exist, the book provides valuable insights to students of religion, sociology and urban studies.
