Přes všechnu hrůznost Lesterova počínání si čtenář uvědomuje, že k němu není schopen cítit pouze antipatie. Dítě Boží vychází ze skutečného případu, ke kterému došlo v Tennessee. Je zde však také všudypřítomný mýtus, posílený alegorickými prvky díla. Přestože román líčí proces postupného odcizení a totální ztrátu morálních hodnot, nutí současně čtenáře, aby hledal vysvětlení daného stavu, a to zdaleka nejen Ballardových činů.
