Dej se odehrává v letech 1849-1850 na americko-mexickém pomezí, kde Glantonova tlupa nájemných zabijáku loví pro mexickou vládu indiánské skalpy. V tlupě se objevuje mnoho historicky doložených postav, ale též smyšlený a bezejmenný šestnáctiletý kluk, protagonista celého příběhu. Nade všemi se však tyčí tajuplný soudce Holden, jenž právem aspiruje na nejzlověstnější postavu americké literatury vůbec. Jak sám řekl, respektuje jen spisovatele, kteří se zabývají otázkami života a smrti. Sám toto pravidlo naplňuje bohatým jazykem a nebojácnou obrazností, která čtenáře neušetří ničeho z lidského zla, jež je v McCarthyho knihách všudypřítomné. Autorovi se dostalo velkého kritického uznání i literárních cen, mezi nimiž nechybí National Book Award for Fiction ci National Book Critic Circle Award anebo Pulitzerova cena za Cestu.
