Stavby / Buildings - Zdeněk Fránek
Architekt Fránek, autor a vydavatel v jedné osobě v této knize shrnuje své realizace a studie z let 1989-2007. Fakulta umění a architektury TUL vydává knihu mapující uplynulý, prací a akcemi nabitý akademický rok 2012/2013. V poměrech českých vysokých škol nemá téměř 500 stránková publikace s prostým názvem - FUA - obdoby. Děkan fakulty, architekt Zdeněk Fránek, důvody vydání knihy v editorialu popisuje slovy: "Kniha má vyslat řadu signálů, že existujeme, v jaké jsme formě, a že máme svůj cíl." Jedná se o jasný signál z města pod Ještědem. Škola ukazuje své karty. FUA představuje úspěšné absolventy, diplomové a bakalářské práce, všechny ateliéry školy, úspěšné projekty studentů i pedagogů a události, které se v průběhu posledního roku udály. Představuje nový web, cesty a aktivity ve světě. A to vše zakončené základy, z nichž liberecká fakulta, založená v roce 1994, vychází. Ideu publikace, její unikátní, z účelu a obsahu vzešlou grafiku, popisují autoři takto: "Kniha ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Stavby a architekti pohledem Zdeňka Lukeše 2 - Zdeněk Lukeš

Působivé fotografie, zahrnující též interiéry a detaily, doplňuje podrobný popis staveb, jejich stylové zařazení, konstrukční a akustické řešení, výše nákladů i způsob využití. Nechybí ani portréty jednotlivých architektů, kteří je vytvořili. V navazující části publikace je pak podrobně představena lokalita, kde má vzniknout v nejbližších letech budova Vltavské filharmonie v Praze, neboť naší metropoli bohužel podobná budova stále chybí. Knihu uzavírá deset rozhovorů se špičkovými dirigenty, sólisty a hudebními manažery, kteří popisují své osobní zkušenosti s uvedenými koncertními a operními sály a vyjadřují svůj názor na realizaci podobné stavby v Praze.

Španělsko a Portugalsko nejen autem - Pavel Franek
V úvodních kapitolách své knihy se autor – Brňák Pavel Franek, profesí strojní inženýr – zmiňuje hlavně o přípravách k cestám. Využívá přitom svých zkušeností z desítek svých návštěv Pyrenejského poloostrova a ostatního Středomoří (Španělsko navštívil devětkrát, Portugalsko dvakrát atd.). Sem patří kapitola Corrida v Málaze a dále témata: Porucha auta a loupež v Alicante; Povídání o Svatojakubské pouti; Hemingwayova Fiesta v Pamploně; Běh býků; Corrida v Pamploně; Adrenalinová jízda v Pyrenejích atp. Autor se zde snaží vhodně spojit množství užitečných informací o památkách s čtivými příběhy z cest. Kniha obsahuje 45 barevných fotografií a mapku.

Loughborough in 50 Buildings - Lynne Dyer
Today, Loughborough is known for its university’s sporting reputation and its industries, but the second-largest town in Leicestershire has a long and varied history. It is believed there is an Iron Age fort on the university campus, and Loughborough is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Loughborough''s history is evident in the buildings that stand today in the town. In this book local historian Lynne Dyer investigates these buildings to share the story of Loughborough. The buildings range from the oldest known in the town to some of the newest, and include those occupied by influential figures in Loughborough’s history, showing not only who they were built by and the circumstances leading to their construction but also their significance in the social history of Loughborough. Medieval buildings can be found here such as the parish church, Old Rectory and Guildhall, ancient pubs and a manor house, as well as a wealth of buildings from its industrial past including John Taylor''s bell foundry, the Great Central Railway and factories such as the Morris Works. The more recent history of Loughborough includes university buildings and a twenty-first-century mural to replace a partially demolished 1960s car park.Loughborough in 50 Buildings explores the history of ... Stavby a architekti pohledem Zdeňka Lukeše 3 - Zdeněk Lukeš

Beverley in 50 Buildings - Lorna Jane Harvey, Phil Dearden
Beverley’s rich historic legacy is visible in its many beautiful buildings. Already an important religious centre in Anglo-Saxon times, it continued to grow throughout the Middle Ages as a place of pilgrimage and as a prosperous wool-trading centre, and its landmark buildings and structures from that period, such as the famous Beverley Minster and North Bar, still attract visitors. In the eighteenth century Beverley became the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire and many streets and buildings were rebuilt in the Georgian style, including the market cross, which later secretly sheltered some soldiers during wartime. Beverley Racecourse was also established at this time. Building continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and alongside the town’s landmark buildings the story of Beverley can be seen in its pubs, including the gas-lit White Horse Inn known locally as ‘Nellie''s Pub’, hospitals, railway station buildings, industrial sites, theatres and cinemas, and more, up to the present day.Beverley in 50 Buildings explores the history of this historic town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Beverley over the years. Timber-framed Buildings - Richard Hayman
Timber-framed buildings are a distinctive and treasured part of Britain’s heritage, with such noteworthy examples as Little Moreton Hall, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Lavenham Guildhall. The oldest are medieval but their numbers peaked in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with a revival in the nineteenth. The majority of timber-framed buildings are houses, but wood was used in all kinds of other buildings, including shops, inns, churches, town halls and farm buildings. In this beautifully illustrated book, Richard Hayman outlines the history of timber-framed designs, and considers the techniques used in their construction, the regional variations in style that can be found, and how these buildings displayed social status. He also guides the reader in identifying structures now concealed behind later work and explores how these buildings have been treated in subsequent centuries.

Frome in 50 Buildings - Alastair MacLeay
Situated at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills, the Somerset market town of Frome has a wealth of history, much of which lies waiting to be discovered among the architectural gems that line its scenic streets. Founded by the monk St Aldhelm in approximately AD 685, the town sits on a hillside with many springs where Aldhelm built a minster church, which became the site of St John’s Church.Frome had three mills and a fair reported in the Domesday Book, but it grew with the development of the cloth trade. By the end of the seventeenth century, a new town was built for the cloth workers on the woad fields and the population increased rapidly until the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Major industries were developed during the nineteenth century, which sustained the economy of the town, such as a brass foundry, supplies to the gas industry and printing.Frome has the most listed buildings of any town in Somerset and is particularly renowned for the quality of its Nonconformist chapels and eighteenth-century vernacular buildings. Great Public Buildings of the North East - Johnson Michael
Britain’s towns and cities are dominated by great public buildings that serve their communities in diverse ways. Foremost among these buildings are the town halls erected for the purpose of civic administration. As seats of local government, town halls are the power bases that have ruled Britain’s great municipalities for centuries. Architecturally, these buildings are inherently symbolic, proclaiming the status, values and history of the towns and cities in which they stand.Great Public Buildings of the North East celebrates the architecture of town halls and civic centres in this distinctive region. The survey encompasses the baroque town halls of the eighteenth century, the eclectic civic palaces of the Victorian era and the more abstract civic centres of the post-war period, conceived as beacons of modernity and political transparency. Analysing these fascinating buildings within a single volume, this book asks how the settlements of North-East England expressed themselves through the medium of civic architecture.Michael Johnson is Assistant Professor of Design History at Northumbria University and Architecture Editor for the Routledge Encyclopaedia of Modernism.

The Handbook of Sustainable Refurbishment: Non-Domestic Buildings - Baker Nick
The refurbishment of existing buildings is a crucial yet often neglected subject within sustainable architecture; attention is usually focused on new buildings. Many old buildings waste large amounts of energy and provide poor internal conditions for occupants through poor lighting, poor ventilation, solar penetration and glare, and poor control of heating and cooling. Demolition is an option but the refurbishment alternative is increasingly seen as more sustainable in terms of architectural value, materials use, neighbourhood disruption and waste disposal. In addition, the potential impact of low energy refurbishment is much greater than that for new build since there are many more buildings already in existence than will be built in the next 10 - 20 years, the period over which many CO2 emission targets apply. The Handbook of Sustainable Refurbishment: Non-Domestic Buildings offers architects, engineers and a wide range of building professionals practical advice, illustrated by real examples. It moves from principles of sustainable refurbishment to specific design and engineering guidance for a variety of circumstances. It emphasises the need for an integrated approach by showing how refurbishment measures interact with one another and with the occupants, and how performance is ultimately influenced by this interaction.

Whitehaven in 50 Buildings - Pat Dargan
Whitehaven was just a fishing village on the Cumbrian coast until the port was developed by the Lowther family in the seventeenth century to export coal from the Cumberland coalfield. In the next century it benefitted from the trade in tobacco, sugar and other products with the West Indies to become the second busiest port in the country. The wealth brought to the area was demonstrated by a new town, the most complete example of a Georgian planned town in Britain. Built on a grid system, the town has over 170 listed buildings. Alongside the Old Fort and Whitehaven Castle, which later became the hospital, are historic houses, shops, churches, civic buildings, hotels, public houses and banks as well as reminders of Whitehaven’s industrial heritage around the harbour, the colliery and the railway. Although the port has declined in recent years and mining ceased in the area, the harbour has been regenerated with a marina and the old colliery buildings preserved and turned into a museum.Whitehaven in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating Cumbrian town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Whitehaven over the years. Modern Buildings in London - Ian Nairn
“Without any doubt, London is one of the best cities in the world for modern architecture. But it is also one of the biggest cities in the world, and it does not make a display of its best things. A visitor looking for new buildings in the City and the West End might well be justified in turning away with a shudder. Yet delightful things may be waiting for him in Lewisham or St. Albans.” —Ian Nairn, from the foreword As one of the few architectural critics to eschew purely aesthetic modes of analysis, Ian Nairn’s timeless books on modern urban cities have been hailed as some of the most significant writing about contemporary Britain, while also being praised as alternative “guidebooks” for curious travelers. First published in 1964, Modern Buildings in London celebrates the character of buildings that were immediately recognizable as “modern” in 1964, many of which were not part of the well-known landscape of London but instead were gems that Nairn stumbled across.Written “by a layman for laymen,” Nairn’s take on modern design includes classic London buildings such as the Barbican, the former BBC Television Centre, and the Penguin Pool at Regent’s Park Zoo, as well as ... Modern Buildings in Britain - Owen Hatherley
The definitive illustrated guide to modern British architecture returns in a beautiful new editionModernism is now a century old, and its consequences are all around us, built into our everyday lived environments. Its place in Britain’s history is fiercely contested, and its role in our future is the subject of ongoing controversy – but modernist buildings have undoubtedly changed our cities, politics and identity forever. In Modern Buildings in Britain, Owen Hatherley applauds the ambition and explores the significance of this most divisive of architectures, travelling from Aberystwyth to Aberdeen, from St Ives to Shetland, in search of our most important and distinctive modern buildings. As Hatherley considers the social, political and cultural value of these structures – a number of which are threatened by demolition – two linked questions emerge: what happens to a building after it has been lived in, and what becomes of an idea when its time has passed? With more than six hundred pages of trenchantly opinionated, often witty analysis, and with three hundred photographs in both duotone and colour, Modern Buildings in Britain is a landmark contribution to the history of British architecture.

The Architecture and Legacy of British Railway Buildings - Malcolm Wood, Robert Thornton
Railway buildings have always had a fascinating character all of their own, despite many no longer being in operational railway service. This book tells the story of how these buildings evolved alongside the development of the railway in Great Britain and examines how architects over the years have responded to the operational, social and cultural influences that define their work. Written for those with a keen interest in architecture and the railway, as well as those new to the subject, The Architecture and Legacy of British Railway Buildings provides an unique insight into the production of railway architecture, both in the context of railway management and the significant periods of ownership, and the swings in national mood for railway-based transportation. As well as tracing its history, the authors take time to consider the legacy these buildings have left behind and the impact of heritage on a continually forward-looking industry. Topics covered include: the context of railway architecture today; the history of how it came into existence; the evolution of different railway building types; the unique aspects of railway building design, and finally, the key railway development periods and their architectural influences.

Living with Buildings - Iain Sinclair
''A remarkable book; surprisingly gripping and often very moving ... at once disorientating and illuminating.'' - Robert MacfarlaneWe shape ourselves, and are shaped in return, by the walls that contain us. Buildings affect how we sleep, work, socialise and even breathe. They can isolate and endanger us but they can also heal us. We project our hopes and fears onto buildings, while they absorb our histories. In Living With Buildings, Iain Sinclair embarks on a series of expeditions - through London, Marseille, Mexico and the Outer Hebrides. A father and his daughter, who has a rare syndrome, visit the estate where they once lived. Developers clink champagne glasses as residents are ''decanted'' from their homes. A box sculpted from whalebone, thought to contain healing properties, is returned to its origins with unexpected consequences. Part investigation, part travelogue, Living With Buildings brings the spaces we inhabit to life as never before.

Modern Buildings in Blackheath and Greenwich - Ana Francisco Sutherland
Blackheath and Greenwich, in the southeast of London, proved to be an unusually fertile ground for modern architecture in the decades following WWII. Housing in particular became the prime field of work for many architecture firms, who designed a large number of residential buildings of various typologies, using new concepts and trying new solutions, inspired by the spirit and political developments of the time.Modern Buildings in Blackheath and Greenwich is based on an extensive research project by architect Ana Francisco Sutherland. It analyses and celebrates outstanding buildings by well-known architects such as Eric Lyons, Patrick Gwynne, Peter Moro, Walter Greaves, and Chamberlin, Powell & Bon, alongside works by lesser-known firms. A total of 65 individual buildings and housing developments by 38 architects are featured with images, plans, and concise texts.Sutherland also takes a broader look at the evolution of modern English architecture in the context of social and housing policies of the time. Brief biographical portraits reveal personal connections between protagonists that made Blackheath and Greenwich such an extraordinary field of design experimentation over five decades. An enclosed map with suggested routes makes the volume also a guide of extraordinary detail for architects and architecture lovers alike.

Taunton in 50 Buildings - Lynne Cleaver
Taunton is the county town of Somerset. It has its origins in the Saxon period and was a prime location in the Civil War and during the Monmouth Rebellion. Much development took place in the Georgian era when many of the ancient buildings were refaced in the new style, reflecting a time of prosperity. With the development of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, and the arrival of the railways, industry came into the town. As housing increased, so did the need for the infrastructure associated with a county town, and the Shire Hall, courts, hospitals, churches, schools and leisure buildings such as the Brewhouse Theatre and County Cricket Ground were developed. In 2017 Taunton was granted the status of a Garden Town by the government, with plans to develop new housing areas and spaces fit for a twenty-first-century town.Taunton in 50 Buildings explores the history of the county town of Somerset through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. This book will appeal to all those who live in Taunton or who have an interest in the area.

Bristol in 50 Buildings - Cynthia Stiles
Buildings are among the crucial features that define a city. They create the cityscape and form the horizon while, at a more personal level, they provide the homes for its citizens, their places of education, worship, entertainment, arts and commerce.Bristol can be found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Although it was never a Roman settlement, the city attracted the Normans who built a large castle, of which some small fragments remain. The destruction of the castle reflects the dramatic changes that have taken place to the city’s architecture over time, whether through redevelopment or bomb damage during the Second World War. Despite the transformation of its urban landscape through the ages, important architectural remnants of Bristol’s past remain, revealing the history of its trade, its residents and its significance to the nation as a whole. In Bristol in 50 Buildings, local historian Cynthia Stiles discusses some of the city’s major landmarks and lesser-known treasures, including the New Room, Courage Brewery and Wills Memorial Building, and explores how they’ve played a part in shaping the city’s fortunes. Bristol’s architectural hodgepodge of buildings, from lowly dwellings to lofty towers, is investigated and celebrated in this fascinating book. All of these buildings and many more are ... Barnsley in 50 Buildings - Keiron Dunn
The market town of Barnsley in South Yorkshire has a long, proud history rooted in its industrial past. First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 (‘Berneslai’), it is home to the late twelfth-century Monk Bretton Priory, which was founded on the edge of the town and can still be seen today, as can the thirteenth-century St Helena’s Well nearby. Barnsley Grammar School was founded in the eighteenth century, and its buildings still stand, but the major growth in the town occurred during the Industrial Revolution, particularly through coal mining and glass production. The National Union of Mining Headquarters are situated on the edge of the town centre and Elsecar Heritage Centre includes the Newcomen beam engine. Barnsley’s civic pride is demonstrated in its imposing Town Hall, which opened in 1933, although the expenditure on it was criticised by George Orwell. Recent years have seen significant developments in Barnsley with much of the town centre being rebuilt, including the Glass Works shopping centre, the Library @ the Lightbox, creative arts hub and theatre the Civic, two new town centre colleges and the Digital Media Centre.Barnsley in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating town through a selection of its ... Macclesfield in 50 Buildings - Ian Tatlock
Medieval Macclesfield was a small market town in Cheshire but industries, particularly button manufacturing, started to develop in the Tudor era. The town’s later wealth and rapid expansion was built on the silk industry that followed, with its first mill being built in 1743. In the first half of the nineteenth century Macclesfield became one of the largest producers of silk in the world and the population quadrupled in the first fifty years, over half of whom were employed in the silk industry, there being nearly 100 mills in the town. Alongside the mills, large numbers of houses, schools, churches and other institutions were built to accommodate this growth, many of which remain today. Although silk manufacturing declined, other industries developed which have left their mark, including the bread maker Hovis. The town has continued to evolve, reflected in new buildings and repurposed old ones.Macclesfield in 50 Buildings explores the history of this town in Cheshire through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years.
