Whitehaven in 50 Buildings - Pat Dargan
Whitehaven was just a fishing village on the Cumbrian coast until the port was developed by the Lowther family in the seventeenth century to export coal from the Cumberland coalfield. In the next century it benefitted from the trade in tobacco, sugar and other products with the West Indies to become the second busiest port in the country. The wealth brought to the area was demonstrated by a new town, the most complete example of a Georgian planned town in Britain. Built on a grid system, the town has over 170 listed buildings. Alongside the Old Fort and Whitehaven Castle, which later became the hospital, are historic houses, shops, churches, civic buildings, hotels, public houses and banks as well as reminders of Whitehaven’s industrial heritage around the harbour, the colliery and the railway. Although the port has declined in recent years and mining ceased in the area, the harbour has been regenerated with a marina and the old colliery buildings preserved and turned into a museum.Whitehaven in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating Cumbrian town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Whitehaven over the years. Beverley in 50 Buildings - Lorna Jane Harvey, Phil Dearden
Beverley’s rich historic legacy is visible in its many beautiful buildings. Already an important religious centre in Anglo-Saxon times, it continued to grow throughout the Middle Ages as a place of pilgrimage and as a prosperous wool-trading centre, and its landmark buildings and structures from that period, such as the famous Beverley Minster and North Bar, still attract visitors. In the eighteenth century Beverley became the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire and many streets and buildings were rebuilt in the Georgian style, including the market cross, which later secretly sheltered some soldiers during wartime. Beverley Racecourse was also established at this time. Building continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and alongside the town’s landmark buildings the story of Beverley can be seen in its pubs, including the gas-lit White Horse Inn known locally as ‘Nellie''s Pub’, hospitals, railway station buildings, industrial sites, theatres and cinemas, and more, up to the present day.Beverley in 50 Buildings explores the history of this historic town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Beverley over the years. Frome in 50 Buildings - Alastair MacLeay
Situated at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills, the Somerset market town of Frome has a wealth of history, much of which lies waiting to be discovered among the architectural gems that line its scenic streets. Founded by the monk St Aldhelm in approximately AD 685, the town sits on a hillside with many springs where Aldhelm built a minster church, which became the site of St John’s Church.Frome had three mills and a fair reported in the Domesday Book, but it grew with the development of the cloth trade. Taunton in 50 Buildings - Lynne Cleaver
Taunton is the county town of Somerset. It has its origins in the Saxon period and was a prime location in the Civil War and during the Monmouth Rebellion. Much development took place in the Georgian era when many of the ancient buildings were refaced in the new style, reflecting a time of prosperity. With the development of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, and the arrival of the railways, industry came into the town. As housing increased, so did the need for the infrastructure associated with a county town, and the Shire Hall, courts, hospitals, churches, schools and leisure buildings such as the Brewhouse Theatre and County Cricket Ground were developed. In 2017 Taunton was granted the status of a Garden Town by the government, with plans to develop new housing areas and spaces fit for a twenty-first-century town.Taunton in 50 Buildings explores the history of the county town of Somerset through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. Bristol in 50 Buildings - Cynthia Stiles
Buildings are among the crucial features that define a city. They create the cityscape and form the horizon while, at a more personal level, they provide the homes for its citizens, their places of education, worship, entertainment, arts and commerce.Bristol can be found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Although it was never a Roman settlement, the city attracted the Normans who built a large castle, of which some small fragments remain. The destruction of the castle reflects the dramatic changes that have taken place to the city’s architecture over time, whether through redevelopment or bomb damage during the Second World War. Despite the transformation of its urban landscape through the ages, important architectural remnants of Bristol’s past remain, revealing the history of its trade, its residents and its significance to the nation as a whole. In Bristol in 50 Buildings, local historian Cynthia Stiles discusses some of the city’s major landmarks and lesser-known treasures, including the New Room, Courage Brewery and Wills Memorial Building, and explores how they’ve played a part in shaping the city’s fortunes. The market town of Barnsley in South Yorkshire has a long, proud history rooted in its industrial past. First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 (‘Berneslai’), it is home to the late twelfth-century Monk Bretton Priory, which was founded on the edge of the town and can still be seen today, as can the thirteenth-century St Helena’s Well nearby. Barnsley Grammar School was founded in the eighteenth century, and its buildings still stand, but the major growth in the town occurred during the Industrial Revolution, particularly through coal mining and glass production. The town’s later wealth and rapid expansion was built on the silk industry that followed, with its first mill being built in 1743. In the first half of the nineteenth century Macclesfield became one of the largest producers of silk in the world and the population quadrupled in the first fifty years, over half of whom were employed in the silk industry, there being nearly 100 mills in the town. Alongside the mills, large numbers of houses, schools, churches and other institutions were built to accommodate this growth, many of which remain today. Battersea and Clapham in 50 Buildings - Lucy McMurdo
Clapham and Battersea, both medieval villages to the south-west of London, enjoy rich and fascinating histories. In time, Clapham became home to wealthy City merchants who built grand mansion houses around Clapham Common, and Battersea’s fortunes changed for the better with the building of a bridge across the Thames in the 1770s, ending its prior isolation. Both areas were to benefit greatly from the coming of the railway in the mid-1800s and then the Tube towards the end of the century, which established their suburbanisation and rapid development. Almost overnight, row upon row of Victorian terraced housing was built, as well as shops, pubs and entertainment venues. The construction of Clapham Junction station in Battersea resulted in the development of a thriving shopping area, including Arding & Hobbs department store. Towards the end of the century Battersea built its new Town Hall, its Polytechnic and the now famous Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Bexhill-on-Sea in 50 Buildings - Alan Starr, David Hatherell
For much of its history, Bexhill was a small rural town on a hill in East Sussex, a mile or two from the sea. Remains of its manor house can still be seen. The town grew during the Napoleonic wars as thousands of troops were stationed at barracks in Bexhill and defensive Martello towers were built, while smuggling continued using local inns. There was a further major change at the end of the nineteenth century when the De La Warr family developed a stylish resort, which continued into the 1930s when the 9th Earl De La Warr built the famous modernist De La Warr Pavilion. The town had been known for its independent schools catering for the military and colonial service in India, but these declined after the Second World War. Bexhill became a favourite for retiring Londoners: large residential estates were built, with high-spec bungalows especially sought after.Bexhill-on-Sea in 50 Buildings explores the history of this town in East Sussex through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. Dunstable in 50 Buildings - Paul Rabbitts
The Bedfordshire town of Dunstable can trace its origins back to Roman times and the building of Watling Street, which crossed the ancient Icknield Way at the point where Dunstable stands today. The Romans also constructed a posting station where travellers could change their horses, and a market town called Durocobrivis developed at the crossroads. When the Romans left Britain, Durocobrivis was abandoned and it wasn’t until 1109 that Henry I created a new town here and subsequently added a royal residence and a priory. Although wool cloth was once Dunstable’s main industry, it was later replaced by strawhat manufacturing, brewing and lace-making. Despite its small size it was also an important stage-coaching town. At the end of the nineteenth century, new industries arrived including printing and engineering, and when the railway reached the town in 1848 the population and building development increased. The twentieth century brought further expansion and growth with industries such as Vauxhall Motors. In Dunstable in 50 Buildings, author Paul Rabbitts focuses on the architectural heritage of the town from across the centuries. Modern Buildings in Britain - Owen Hatherley
The definitive illustrated guide to modern British architecture returns in a beautiful new editionModernism is now a century old, and its consequences are all around us, built into our everyday lived environments. Its place in Britain’s history is fiercely contested, and its role in our future is the subject of ongoing controversy – but modernist buildings have undoubtedly changed our cities, politics and identity forever. In Modern Buildings in Britain, Owen Hatherley applauds the ambition and explores the significance of this most divisive of architectures, travelling from Aberystwyth to Aberdeen, from St Ives to Shetland, in search of our most important and distinctive modern buildings. As Hatherley considers the social, political and cultural value of these structures – a number of which are threatened by demolition – two linked questions emerge: what happens to a building after it has been lived in, and what becomes of an idea when its time has passed? With more than six hundred pages of trenchantly opinionated, often witty analysis, and with three hundred photographs in both duotone and colour, Modern Buildings in Britain is a landmark contribution to the history of British architecture.

A History of the World in 50 Pieces - Tom Service
Explore how music has changed our world through 50 pieces across classical, folk and world traditions with BBC presenter Tom Service, in this official Radio 3 compendium. Music transports us and defines us. As a form of expression, it has been passed down through oral tradition, musical notation and recordings in a chain of connection that spans the globe, across the millennia.A History of the World in 50 Pieces follows that chain, collating 50 pieces of classical music that reflect our changing politics, social structures and technological development, and how composers, musicians and listeners have shaped those currents of history. From Bach to Beethoven, Songlines to Saariaho, Hildegard of Bingen to the Happy Birthday song, Tom Service offers a fresh take on pieces that many of us think we know, and many more we might not. With each short, sharp analysis, he expands the typical canon and tests the boundaries of what we understand to be ‘classical music’ – or even music at all, such as the sounds of the earth’s rotation, and the songs of humpback whales. An official BBC Radio 3 publication, A History of the World in 50 Pieces is a book for anyone curious about the power ... The Pat Hobby Stories - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Written during his tumultuous Hollywood years, a collection of seventeen razor-sharp tales from literary legend F. Scott Fitzgerald, where humor and heartbreak collide through the eyes of a once-successful screenwriter.A fascinating study in self-satire, Fitzgerald pulls back the curtain on the glitz, chaos, and absurdity of the Hollywood movie industry through the eyes of Pat Hobby, a washed-up screenwriter clinging desperately to his faded dreams. Pat’s misadventures offer an entertaining glimpse into the life of a man caught between ambition and reality. Set in 1930s Hollywood—a place where lunchroom gossip held more power than the scripts themselves—Pat’s world is one of desperation and hustle. Once a celebrated writer, he’s now a forgotten relic, scraping by on odd jobs and half-baked schemes. With a drink in one hand and a sarcastic quip in the other, Pat navigates the industry with a blend of cunning and futility. “This was not art, this was an industry,” Pat himself quips, capturing the soul of a system where creativity often takes a backseat to profit. Originally published in Esquire from 1939 to 1940, these stories were born from Fitzgerald’s own struggles as a Hollywood writer. His experiences at Universal Studios shaped every wry line and ... The Great Wall in 50 Objects - William Lindesay
The culmination of a lifetime''s field work and research, William Lindesay selects 50 artefacts to tell the story of the Great Wall from the 2nd century B.C. to the late-twentieth century. Much like an excavation, from the survey beforehand to the foundations, the core, and eventually the ruins, Lindesay explores the majesty of the Wall through the objects it has inspired such as the appearance of the Wall in Ortelius'' atlas of the world to the unexpected origins of ''wolf smoke'', proliferation of the blunderbuss in the 15th century Great Wall theatre of war, and Kafka''s classic short story At the Building of the Great Wall. EEnhanced by stories of the discovery of the objects, and those of their modern-day keepers from curators to collectors, each artefact has been meticulously researched and recorded. The Great Wall in 50 Objects celebrates the history and the legacy of a world wonder.
