Chiswick in 50 Buildings - Lucy McMurdo
Chiswick is considered to be one of West London’s most appealing suburbs, renowned for its leafy appearance, riverside pubs and fine houses. Its four original villages – Strand on the Green, Turnham Green, Little Sutton and Old Chiswick – have remained a cohesive body despite the construction of a major road in the 1950s. The area has always been known for its good air, fishing and riverside trades. In the late nineteenth century Thornycroft & Co. shipbuilders launched their vessels and built the first torpedo boat for the Royal Navy. The yard was close to another of the area’s main industries – brewing – and Fuller’s Griffin Brewery is still a major business here operating from its 350-year-old site beside the Thames. In Chiswick in 50 Buildings author Lucy McMurdo presents an engaging and accessible perspective of the area’s rich architectural heritage. Walk around Chiswick’s streets and you will see buildings from the 1500s onwards in every architectural style. Until the mid-nineteenth century it was renowned for its market gardens and parkland as well as its grand Palladian villa, Chiswick House, designed in the early eighteenth century by the 3rd Earl of Burlington. Battersea and Clapham in 50 Buildings - Lucy McMurdo
Clapham and Battersea, both medieval villages to the south-west of London, enjoy rich and fascinating histories. In time, Clapham became home to wealthy City merchants who built grand mansion houses around Clapham Common, and Battersea’s fortunes changed for the better with the building of a bridge across the Thames in the 1770s, ending its prior isolation. Both areas were to benefit greatly from the coming of the railway in the mid-1800s and then the Tube towards the end of the century, which established their suburbanisation and rapid development. Almost overnight, row upon row of Victorian terraced housing was built, as well as shops, pubs and entertainment venues. The construction of Clapham Junction station in Battersea resulted in the development of a thriving shopping area, including Arding & Hobbs department store. Towards the end of the century Battersea built its new Town Hall, its Polytechnic and the now famous Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Clapham’s public library appeared around the same period, as did many new churches catering for the greatly enlarged residential population of both neighbourhoods. Today, the two suburbs are wonderfully vibrant areas with a superb variety of architecture – domestic, civic, religious and industrial, the latter best seen ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Loughborough in 50 Buildings - Lynne Dyer
Today, Loughborough is known for its university’s sporting reputation and its industries, but the second-largest town in Leicestershire has a long and varied history. It is believed there is an Iron Age fort on the university campus, and Loughborough is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Loughborough''s history is evident in the buildings that stand today in the town. In this book local historian Lynne Dyer investigates these buildings to share the story of Loughborough. The buildings range from the oldest known in the town to some of the newest, and include those occupied by influential figures in Loughborough’s history, showing not only who they were built by and the circumstances leading to their construction but also their significance in the social history of Loughborough. Medieval buildings can be found here such as the parish church, Old Rectory and Guildhall, ancient pubs and a manor house, as well as a wealth of buildings from its industrial past including John Taylor''s bell foundry, the Great Central Railway and factories such as the Morris Works. Beverley in 50 Buildings - Lorna Jane Harvey, Phil Dearden
Beverley’s rich historic legacy is visible in its many beautiful buildings. Already an important religious centre in Anglo-Saxon times, it continued to grow throughout the Middle Ages as a place of pilgrimage and as a prosperous wool-trading centre, and its landmark buildings and structures from that period, such as the famous Beverley Minster and North Bar, still attract visitors. In the eighteenth century Beverley became the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire and many streets and buildings were rebuilt in the Georgian style, including the market cross, which later secretly sheltered some soldiers during wartime. Beverley Racecourse was also established at this time. Building continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and alongside the town’s landmark buildings the story of Beverley can be seen in its pubs, including the gas-lit White Horse Inn known locally as ‘Nellie''s Pub’, hospitals, railway station buildings, industrial sites, theatres and cinemas, and more, up to the present day.Beverley in 50 Buildings explores the history of this historic town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Beverley over the years. Situated at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills, the Somerset market town of Frome has a wealth of history, much of which lies waiting to be discovered among the architectural gems that line its scenic streets. Founded by the monk St Aldhelm in approximately AD 685, the town sits on a hillside with many springs where Aldhelm built a minster church, which became the site of St John’s Church.Frome had three mills and a fair reported in the Domesday Book, but it grew with the development of the cloth trade. Whitehaven was just a fishing village on the Cumbrian coast until the port was developed by the Lowther family in the seventeenth century to export coal from the Cumberland coalfield. In the next century it benefitted from the trade in tobacco, sugar and other products with the West Indies to become the second busiest port in the country. The wealth brought to the area was demonstrated by a new town, the most complete example of a Georgian planned town in Britain. Built on a grid system, the town has over 170 listed buildings. Taunton in 50 Buildings - Lynne Cleaver
Taunton is the county town of Somerset. It has its origins in the Saxon period and was a prime location in the Civil War and during the Monmouth Rebellion. Much development took place in the Georgian era when many of the ancient buildings were refaced in the new style, reflecting a time of prosperity. With the development of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, and the arrival of the railways, industry came into the town. As housing increased, so did the need for the infrastructure associated with a county town, and the Shire Hall, courts, hospitals, churches, schools and leisure buildings such as the Brewhouse Theatre and County Cricket Ground were developed. In 2017 Taunton was granted the status of a Garden Town by the government, with plans to develop new housing areas and spaces fit for a twenty-first-century town.Taunton in 50 Buildings explores the history of the county town of Somerset through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. Bristol in 50 Buildings - Cynthia Stiles
Buildings are among the crucial features that define a city. They create the cityscape and form the horizon while, at a more personal level, they provide the homes for its citizens, their places of education, worship, entertainment, arts and commerce.Bristol can be found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Although it was never a Roman settlement, the city attracted the Normans who built a large castle, of which some small fragments remain. The destruction of the castle reflects the dramatic changes that have taken place to the city’s architecture over time, whether through redevelopment or bomb damage during the Second World War. Despite the transformation of its urban landscape through the ages, important architectural remnants of Bristol’s past remain, revealing the history of its trade, its residents and its significance to the nation as a whole. In Bristol in 50 Buildings, local historian Cynthia Stiles discusses some of the city’s major landmarks and lesser-known treasures, including the New Room, Courage Brewery and Wills Memorial Building, and explores how they’ve played a part in shaping the city’s fortunes. Barnsley in 50 Buildings - Keiron Dunn
The market town of Barnsley in South Yorkshire has a long, proud history rooted in its industrial past. First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 (‘Berneslai’), it is home to the late twelfth-century Monk Bretton Priory, which was founded on the edge of the town and can still be seen today, as can the thirteenth-century St Helena’s Well nearby. Barnsley Grammar School was founded in the eighteenth century, and its buildings still stand, but the major growth in the town occurred during the Industrial Revolution, particularly through coal mining and glass production. The National Union of Mining Headquarters are situated on the edge of the town centre and Elsecar Heritage Centre includes the Newcomen beam engine. Barnsley’s civic pride is demonstrated in its imposing Town Hall, which opened in 1933, although the expenditure on it was criticised by George Orwell. The town’s later wealth and rapid expansion was built on the silk industry that followed, with its first mill being built in 1743. In the first half of the nineteenth century Macclesfield became one of the largest producers of silk in the world and the population quadrupled in the first fifty years, over half of whom were employed in the silk industry, there being nearly 100 mills in the town. Alongside the mills, large numbers of houses, schools, churches and other institutions were built to accommodate this growth, many of which remain today. Bexhill-on-Sea in 50 Buildings - Alan Starr, David Hatherell
For much of its history, Bexhill was a small rural town on a hill in East Sussex, a mile or two from the sea. Remains of its manor house can still be seen. The town grew during the Napoleonic wars as thousands of troops were stationed at barracks in Bexhill and defensive Martello towers were built, while smuggling continued using local inns. There was a further major change at the end of the nineteenth century when the De La Warr family developed a stylish resort, which continued into the 1930s when the 9th Earl De La Warr built the famous modernist De La Warr Pavilion. The town had been known for its independent schools catering for the military and colonial service in India, but these declined after the Second World War. Bexhill became a favourite for retiring Londoners: large residential estates were built, with high-spec bungalows especially sought after.Bexhill-on-Sea in 50 Buildings explores the history of this town in East Sussex through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. Dunstable in 50 Buildings - Paul Rabbitts
The Bedfordshire town of Dunstable can trace its origins back to Roman times and the building of Watling Street, which crossed the ancient Icknield Way at the point where Dunstable stands today. The Romans also constructed a posting station where travellers could change their horses, and a market town called Durocobrivis developed at the crossroads. When the Romans left Britain, Durocobrivis was abandoned and it wasn’t until 1109 that Henry I created a new town here and subsequently added a royal residence and a priory. Although wool cloth was once Dunstable’s main industry, it was later replaced by strawhat manufacturing, brewing and lace-making. Despite its small size it was also an important stage-coaching town. At the end of the nineteenth century, new industries arrived including printing and engineering, and when the railway reached the town in 1848 the population and building development increased. The twentieth century brought further expansion and growth with industries such as Vauxhall Motors. In Dunstable in 50 Buildings, author Paul Rabbitts focuses on the architectural heritage of the town from across the centuries. The Livery Halls of the City of London - Anya Lucas
For more than 600 years the Livery Companies have played a leading role in commercial activities and social and political life in the City of London. These trade associations, each representing a particular craft or profession, were originally responsible for controlling, for example, wages and working conditions. As the Companies were established and incorporated by royal charter, largely in the 14th and 15th centuries, they began acquiring and adapting buildings from which to operate. The Companies’ headquarters – the Livery Halls – gradually evolved from large medieval town houses to become an identifiable building type matched in scale and ambition only by the guild houses of northern European mercantile cities and the Venetian scuole. By the time of the Great Fire of London in 1666, there were at least 53 Livery Halls. Of the 40 Halls standing today, half remain on their medieval sites, but all have been rebuilt several times. To give only two examples: there have been six incarnations of Clothworkers’ Hall on Mincing Lane and six Salters’ Halls on three different City sites. The Ludicrous Laws of Old London - Nigel Cawthorne
London abounds with all manner of ludicrous laws, and not all of these curious statutes have been relegated to the past. Despite the efforts of the Law Commission there are medieval laws that are still in force, and the City of London and its livery companies have their own legal oddities. Laws are made in the capital because parliament is here; so are the Old Bailey, the Law Courts, the House of Lords and, now, the Supreme Court. The privy council, which sometimes has to decide cases, also sits in London, and there were other courts that used to sit in London, from prize courts concerning war booty to ecclesiastical courts. Having maintained its ''ancient rights and freedoms'' under Magna Carta, the City felt free to enact its own laws, many of which seem to have had to do with what people could wear. Until quite recently, for example, a man could be arrested for walking down the street wearing a wig, a robe and silk stockings - unless he was a judge. And all human folly has been paraded through the law courts of London, to the extent that it is difficult to know where the serious business of ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Lost London - Tim Brown
London has seen huge changes since the 1980s. Massive infrastructure projects such as Crossrail/the Elizabeth Line have transformed the cityscape in many parts of the capital. Areas such as Kings Cross and much of the City of London have been rebuilt and the Docklands area has been regenerated. Everyday street scenes have also changed over the decades, with transport modernised, shops disappeared or redesigned, other buildings repurposed or demolished, and new areas becoming fashionable.Lost London presents a portrait of the city, from the 1980s to recent years that has radically changed or disappeared today, showing not only industries and buildings that have gone but also people and street scenes, many popular places of entertainment and much more. This fascinating photographic history of lost London will appeal to all those who live in London or know it well, as well as those who remember it from previous decades.

Niko J. Kallianiotis: Athenai, In Search of Home
Athênai, In Search of Home expands Niko J. Kallianiotis’ first monograph America in a Trance, and the work produced in Pennsylvania, which for two decades became his second home. If America in a Trance was about his departure from Athens, Athênai, In Search of Home is about coming back to his roots, eager to assimilate within a place that over the years grew to be foreign but at the same time maintained its layers of familiarity. The photographs navigate through the metro areas of Athens within an utterly diverse setting, all the way to the periphery and within a more rural and industrial stage that is vital to the character and condition of Athens. Throughout the years the city and the surrounding territories have experienced their share of socio-economic struggles and topographic transformations that have altered its identity. Despite these facts the city still stands, at times proudly and at others solemn, but always fervent to maintain its uniqueness and its yearning for a new identity, in search of new home, within one that already exists. And the city of Athens in Kallianiotis’ photographs is elliptically delineated as a vibrant environment that binds together luxury and social inequality, through which ... The Mayflower in Britain - Graham Taylor
Published on the quatercentenary of the Mayflower’s journey, this book offers a unique perspective by placing the story in a British context and providing a fresh analysis of why the journey took place. It explores the economic as well as the religious reasons for the journey to strip away the romantic, orthodox view of the Mayflower and offer an illuminating insight into how the journey became a reality. The voyage of the Mayflower has almost always been seen as part of American history and as part of America’s struggle for democracy. Here Graham Taylor presents the story as part of British history and part of Britain’s struggle for democracy. The tale usually told is of a romantic departure from Plymouth, Devon, and a momentous arrival in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In fact, the voyage arose out of grim and protracted negotiations in London. It was financed and organised by random investors in the City of London and its religious element was supplied by an underground church in Southwark, London. It sailed to America probably from Blackwall, in what is now London. The ship and its chief officers were based in Rotherhithe – also now London. Far from romantic, the voyage was a catalogue ...
