Překvapila mě: trojí vraždu vysvětlili autor i kriminalisté přesvědčivě, ale textem se vedle toho nesl náznak, že její skutečnou motivací byla tajemná trojí msta za povražděné holuby. Kdo má rád prózy Jiřího Kratochvila, přijme ochotně fakt, že jedním z hrdinů a vypravěčů tohoto románu je králík. Nad králíkovými epizodami a zápletkami se mohou čtenáři těšit na neuvěřitelná překvapení, a nebudou zklamáni, protože autorova fantazie je nedostižná. Navíc mate tím, že postavy i události při vstupu do děje vypadají, jako by pocházely ze skutečnosti, kterou jsme zvyklí pozorovat kolem sebe. Jenže Kratochvil naopak předpokládá, že "život krade z literatury". V tom duchu si jej vysnívá a buduje. Žije však v reálném světě a dobře ví o jeho temných nejistotách. Napovídá tomu i záměrně kunderovský název románu. Básník - to označení si Kratochvil plně zaslouží - byl svědkem krásných příslibů, které se naplnily v podobě katastrof, prohlédal mocensky prosazované lži, jež se pro mnohé staly pravdou, zakusil doteky rukou, které se prohlašovaly za pomocné, ale patřily zabijákům. Kratochvilovská říše řízená zákony svobodného výmyslu budí radost. Přitom však nese mateřské znamení doby diktatur, vyhlazovacích táborů a nadějeplných převratů ohrožených zmarem. Ve čtyřech oddílech je představeno přes 60 uměleckých děl, jež byla vytvořena po roce 1989, krátký historický úvod připomíná i starší období od 60. let. Most of Alexander the Great's thirteen year reign as king of Macedon was spent in hard campaigning which conquered half the known world, during which he never besieged a city he did not take. Alexander's sieges were no less vital, and certainly more numerous, than his famous battles in securing his vast empire and yet there is no book concentrating purely on his many epic sieges and his mastery of siegecraft. Perhaps the most famous example is Tyre, which had previously successfully withstood a 13-year siege by the Babylonians and which used to be an island before Alexander got there.
