Audiokniha: The sixth step into the Darkness is called Longing, and it features a single short story; a very distinctive one indeed. It is a relatively short masterpiece by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the author who is a pillar of our series. The Outsider is one of his most often published short stories, and it has proven to be very popular with both readers and listeners. Written in 1921, it was published five years later in Weird Tales magazine (April 1926). Lovecraft himself thought that he came near to Poe’s style in this story (the first paragraphs are an echo of Berenice, by E. A. Poe, and the inspiration of, The Masque of Red Death is also pretty clear). This short story is probably the most elaborate story by Lovecraft, with echoes of his gurus and multifaceted references. The atmosphere is emphasized by actors’ performances, music, and the graphics on the cover.

Indeed, THAT Stoker who wrote the epistolary novel Dracula – the very first novel that dealt with a vampire legend. The Judge’s House (written in 1914) completes the collection, and its strongest point is building the atmosphere of fear, which is underlined by excellent voices and music.

In them, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, practically unread and unknown during his life, but a source of inspiration after his death thanks to friends and devoted fans, deals with the clash of two worlds – the reality and “beyond”. Beyond the Wall of Sleep is a short story from 1919 based on the innovative (at that time) idea of using psychology for explaining real-life issues. Incidentally, a near namesake song (Behind the Wall of Sleep) appeared on the debut album of Black Sabbath, and it should come as no surprise that it was inspired by this short story. The second story, From Beyond (written in 1920, published in 1934), hovers around the theme of a mad scientist willing to peek beyond reality. It inspired a few films, songs by death-metal bands, and it even features in the PC game, Half-Life. Audiokniha: Druhý krok k temnotě nese název Iluze a průkopník moderního hororu, americký autor Howard Phillips Lovecraft, se zde se setkává se svým dalším vzorem, jímž není nikdo jiný než další americký mistr pera, Edgar Allan Poe (Lovecraft bývá někdy označována i za Poeova přímého pokračovatele). Aptly enough, the iconic author from Ireland is on the doorstep; Bram Stoker – and with his Dracula to boot. Well, wait a second – not exactly, to be honest. Dracula’s Guest is one of the stories published only after Stoker’s death, and even though Dracula is in the title, he will not make it into the story. Interestingly enough, Jonathan Harker, the actual guest – also does not appear. This short story is actually an original introduction to Dracula. It is a slightly altered version of a chapter of the novel that was discarded during preparations for print. The final story is The Room in the Tower, by Edward Frederic Benson. Strange, unsettling atmosphere is present right from the beginning, and it intensifies via recurrent nightmares – right up to the shocking climax of the final scene. As in all previous audiobooks, actors’ performances and music make for a perfect mix, combining to take you on the horror ride promised by the cover.

It features The Tenant of the Cedars by Mary Elizabeth Penn – a story about the vengeance of the dead. Little is known of the author other than the fact that she was published in magazines in the late Victorian era. Her stories were long forgotten until being rediscovered in 1999 – over 100 years since the last of them was published in 1897. On the other hand, Bram Stoker (author of the famed novel, Dracula) is a legend in the horror world. This collection features Stoker’s short story, A Dream of Red Hands. The theme is crime and punishment, seasoned with a hint of redemption. Once again – excellent voices, stunning music, and great graphical design result in an exquisite mixture of emotions.

Audiokniha: Po devíti krocích jsme dospěli ke konci – přímo do srdce Temnoty. A je příznačné, že nás vítá ikonický autor z Irska jménem Bram Stoker. A s Drákulou po boku. Tedy – ne tak docela. Drakulův host je jedna z povídek, které vydala vdova po něm až po jeho smrti. A ač v názvu figuruje jméno knížete temnot, osobně se vlastně na scéně vůbec neobjeví. Ani Jonathan Harker, tedy skutečný host, nedostává prostor. Tato povídka představuje vlastně úvod do románu Drákula. Jde o zlehka přepracovanou verzi jedné z kapitol známého románu, která musela být obětována během přípravy Drákuly k tisku. Úplně poslední temnou povídkou je Komnata ve věži, kterou napsal Angličan Edward Frederic Benson. Podivná, tíživá atmosféra na vás dýchne hned na začátku a postupně se umocňuje – přes vracející se noční můry až k hrůznému závěru. Obě povídky čte nezapomenutelným způsobem Petr Šmíd.

Audiokniha: Devátý krok k temnotě s názvem O lásce a dalších citech nás přenese do finále celé série – do samotné temnoty. Setkáváme se v něm s Nájemnicí chaty pod cedry autorky Mary Elizabeth Pennové – v příběhu, který se točí okolo msty ze záhrobí. O autorce je známo velmi málo, prakticky jen to, že publikovala v časopisech v pozdním Viktoriánském období a že její příběhy upadly v zapomnění záhy po zveřejnění. Za stěnou spánku je povídka z roku 1919 vycházející z ve své době inovativní myšlenky využití psychologie pro vysvětlení problémů v reálném světě. Mimochodem – takřka stejnojmenná skladba (Behind the Wall of Sleep) se objevila na debutovém albu skupiny Black Sabbath a byla inspirována právě touto povídkou. Audiokniha: Šestý krok k temnotě s názvem touha sestává z jediné povídky – ovšem o to výraznější. Jde o kratší dílo Howarda Phillipse Lovecrafta, autora, jenž tvoří pilíř celé série. Vyvrženec (v jiných překladech Vyděděnec či Outsider) patří k jeho nejčastěji vydávaným a překládaným povídkám a dodnes je velmi populární. Dílko pochází z roku 1921, ale poprvé bylo zveřejněno až o pět let později v magazínu Weird Tales (v dubnu 1926). Sám Lovecraft v jednom dopise příteli hodnotí Vyvržence velmi vysoko a podle jeho slov se mu v této povídce podařilo velmi přiblížit stylu Edgara Allana Poea – úvodní odstavce jsou dokonce jakousi ozvěnou Poeovy povídky Berenice a zjevná je i inspirace Maskou červené smrti. Vypravěčem je jediný, osamělý obyvatel starého tajemného hradu, přičemž není zcela jasné, jak dlouho už na tomto místě žije, ovšem je zřejmé, že kromě nápisů na zdech je bez jakéhokoli kontaktu s okolím světem. Především díky ústřednímu tématu samoty mají někteří kritici a literární historikové za to, že jde o autobiografickou povídku, ovšem spíše se zdá, že autor se ve slabších chvilkách opravdu mohl cítit osamělý a ošklivý. Celkově jde snad o nejpropracovanější Lovecraftovo dílo s ozvuky vzorů a mnohovrstevnatými odkazy.

Audiokniha: Vrcholné dílo slavného autora na pomezí fantasy a hororu o putování říší snů i nočních můr H. P. Audiokniha: Vědecká expedice do neprobádaných ledových končin narazí na nečekaný objev. Antarktické prahory přesahující svou výškou Himaláje, skrývají před vědeckou výpravou nečekané tajemství. Výprava sestávající ze čtyř univerzitních profesorů, týmu studentů a mechaniků míří do dosud neprobádaných končin Antarktidy. Jejich cílem je získat v horských pásmech hlubinné vzorky prastarých hornin. Pak se však část skupiny odpojí a vydá se letecky prozkoumat oblast, kam ještě lidská noha nevkročila. V opadající sněhové bouři se před nimi zjeví obrovské sopečné pohoří, svou výškou dalece přesahující Himaláje. Pohled zblízka prozrazuje přítomnost řady jeskynních otvorů, z nichž některé mají nezvykle pravidelný tvar; úbočí horských titánů se řítí dolů v dokonalých kolmicích.
