Beyond the Wall of Sleep is a short story from 1919 based on the innovative (at that time) idea of using psychology for explaining real-life issues. Incidentally, a near namesake song (Behind the Wall of Sleep) appeared on the debut album of Black Sabbath, and it should come as no surprise that it was inspired by this short story. The second story, From Beyond (written in 1920, published in 1934), hovers around the theme of a mad scientist willing to peek beyond reality. It inspired a few films, songs by death-metal bands, and it even features in the PC game, Half-Life. The last story of the trio is The Transition of Juan Romero, from 1919, originally written for a limited circle of friends and published after Lovecraft’s death. The feature “character” is a mysterious evil encountered in an ancient ritual to the Mexican deity, Huitzilopochtli. Za stěnou spánku je povídka z roku 1919 vycházející z ve své době inovativní myšlenky využití psychologie pro vysvětlení problémů v reálném světě. Mimochodem – takřka stejnojmenná skladba (Behind the Wall of Sleep) se objevila na debutovém albu skupiny Black Sabbath a byla inspirována právě touto povídkou. Druhou v řadě je Z neznámého světa z roku 1920 (publikovaná v roce 1934). Rozehrává téma šíleného vědce pokoušejícího se nahlédnout za realitu – inspirovala několik filmů a skladeb death metalových kapel (jeden jejích prvků se dokonce objevuje i v oblíbené počítačové hře Half-Life). Závěrečnou povídkou trojlístku je Proměna Juana Romera z roku 1919 (psaná ovšem jen pro velmi úzký okruh přátel a publikovaná až po autorově smrti), v níž hraje hlavní roli tajemné zlo – podle zmínky mexického božstva Huitzilopochtli se lze dokonce dohadovat o spojitosti s obětním rituálem. Všechny tři povídky čte nenapodobitelným způsobem Petr Šmíd.

Sbírka básní Houby z Yuggothu (Fungi from Yuggoth) je výjimečná kniha. Je to jediná známá Lovecraftova sbírka poezie. Jde o věnec sonetů, šestatřicet tematicky i dějově provázaných textů, stylově mezi Petrarkou a Shakespearem, napsaných z valné většiny v devíti dnech na přelomu let 1929 a 1930. Dnes funguje jednak jako metatext, tedy jako poezie odvozená motivicky i v konkrétních obrazech od jiných, předcházejících Lovecraftových prozaických textů, jednak jako prototext, který motivy i obrazy nabízí pro další využití. A přímé i volnější odkazy nemíří jen za H. P. Lovecraftem, ale i za jeho druhy v hororové zbrani, jimiž byli lord Dunsany nebo Robert W. Chambers. Sbírka vznikla v době, kdy se Lovecraftův specifický fikční svět rozvíjel, probarvoval, konkretizoval - ovšem nebyl ještě zdaleka hotový. Jednotlivá čísla sbírky jsou výpravná, dějová, navazují na sebe, gradují, takže ve finále navozuje kniha dojem spíše povídky než básnické práce ve formátu znělky. Houby mají k Lovecraftově próze blíž, než by se mohlo navenek zdát. Kniha vychází dvojjazyčně, každou báseň doprovází ilustrace Františka Štorma.

Dílko pochází z roku 1921, ale poprvé bylo zveřejněno až o pět let později v magazínu Weird Tales (v dubnu 1926). Sám Lovecraft v jednom dopise příteli hodnotí Vyvržence velmi vysoko a podle jeho slov se mu v této povídce podařilo velmi přiblížit stylu Edgara Allana Poea – úvodní odstavce jsou dokonce jakousi ozvěnou Poeovy povídky Berenice a zjevná je i inspirace Maskou červené smrti. Vypravěčem je jediný, osamělý obyvatel starého tajemného hradu, přičemž není zcela jasné, jak dlouho už na tomto místě žije, ovšem je zřejmé, že kromě nápisů na zdech je bez jakéhokoli kontaktu s okolím světem. Především díky ústřednímu tématu samoty mají někteří kritici a literární historikové za to, že jde o autobiografickou povídku, ovšem spíše se zdá, že autor se ve slabších chvilkách opravdu mohl cítit osamělý a ošklivý. Celkově jde snad o nejpropracovanější Lovecraftovo dílo s ozvuky vzorů a mnohovrstevnatými odkazy.
