Using the fluid brushwork that had been introduced by his friends the Impressionists, his portraits are intimate and experimental, conveying both superficial appearances and psychological depths, and his landscapes are atmospheric and immediate. Sargent was in constant demand for his portraits, and during his lifetime he was perceived as a far more significant artist than contemporary avant-garde painters such as Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin, and he allied himself with one of the most progressive, independent ateliers in Paris. His style fused the spectacular Impressionistic brushwork with techniques he learned from both Old and Modern masters, combined with his interest in human psychology, all consolidated by his own adroit artistry. Yet during his life, as well as attracting such acclamation from across Europe and America, he provoked some scandal and condemnation, and after his death, he became judged adversely. Pilsudski was the leading proponent of armed Polish resistance to Tsarist Russian rule in the early years of the twentieth century. During the Russo-Japanese War he went to Japan to seek armed and funds for a Polish uprising. In WW1 he skilfully walked a perilous line. He raised the Polish Legion to fight alongside the Central Powers against the Russians. In the warâ ™s closing stages he distanced himself from the Central Powers and secured independence for Poland. Having attained his great goal of a free Poland, he fought a series of wars. These little-known conflicts (with Ukraine and Lithuania) are illuminated by Evan McGilvray. When it became clear that Bolshevik Russia was preparing to invade Poland, Pilsudski launched a pre-emptive attack in 1920. Civic pride was strong and no less than seven municipal undertakings ran bus services in the coal-mining valleys of Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire, while capital city Cardiff and port town Newport each had their own large Corporation Transport Departments, with Cardiff maintaining the only Welsh trolleybus network at that time. Six British Electric Traction group companies operated in the area with fleet sizes ranging from the thirty-four vehicles of Neath Cardiff Luxury Coaches to 674 buses and coaches with Western Welsh. British Transport Commission-controlled Red White and United Welsh were significant in parts of the territory, adding variety by still running AEC, Albion, Guy and Leyland buses before sale to the BTC led to standardisation on Bristol buses. The tentacles of the mighty Crosville empire stretched down to Cardigan in far West Wales. Independent operation, using diverse new and second-hand buses, was strong across both industrial South Wales and rural West Wales.This book profiles many of the operators and illustrates their vehicles through 180 colour and monochrome images, mostly previously unpublished.
