British Railways Steam Locomotives 1948-68 - Hugh Longworth
When it was originally published, Hugh Longworth''s definitive record of every steam locomotive operated by British Railways from nationalisation until the end of steam traction on the network in 1968 was very much welcomed as it provided for the first time in one place a detailed and accurate source of reference on this important subject. With the book having been out of print for some time, a new and revised edition was overdue. However, the extent of the revisions, which included the books'' many photographs being given more space on the page and the use of enlarged and enhanced locomotive drawings, greatly increased the size of the work. Rather than attempt to cut or dilute the content, it was decided that instead of publishing one unwieldy and expensive book, a more realistic approach was to present the work in two volumes of roughly similar size. This is the first of these and focuses on the Great Western and LNER locomotives which became part of BR stock in 1948. The second book, due in 2025, will cover Southern and LMS locos and the Standard classes introduced by BR.The entry for each class provides essential information including the size of cylinders and driving ... British Railways Diesel and Electric Locomotives - Hugh Longworth
Hugh Longworth has published a number of very successful volumes on British Railways'' steam locos, DMUs and coaching stock. His thorough and detailed research has focused on the operation history and allocations of the rolling stock types covered in these books. In this completely new work, in the style of those previously published, he covers in detail all the classes of diesel and electrics locomotives that were introduced by BR from the modernisation plan of 1955 to the present day. Each class, which operated over this lengthy period, is covered in the book. The headlong rush to eliminate steam traction and modernise the railways from the 1950s onwards produced very mixed results. Some of the locomotives introduced were very successful and long lived with examples still in service well into the twenty first century whilst others were found seriously wanting and withdrawn completely after only a few years in service. For each class, a concise history is provided giving construction details and full technical specifications. For every individual locomotive, a full listing is provided including all numbers applied throughout its career, names where they were allocated, details of entry into service, full allocation details over their operational life as well as ... British Railways First Generation DMUs - Hugh Longworth
First widely introduced from the early 1950s onwards, the diesel multiple-unit represented an attempt to produce a vehicle that would replace steam traction on the country''s branch lines and secondary routes at a time when the railway industry was in desperate need of a cheaper alternative to steam in order to improve the finances of these increasingly unremunerative lines. Over 4,000 vehicles were ordered from both BR works and private manufacturers as part of the BR modernisation plan of 1955.Following refurbishment from the early 1970s onwards, many first generation DMUs were to survive in service until the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although most were scrapped after withdrawal, a significant number of these vehicles have been preserved on the nation''s heritage railways. This updated and expanded edition of Hugh Longworth''s classic book on the subject records the great variety of DMU types constructed as part of the programme. Each is covered in detail with information about construction, technical specifications, entry into service, formations, allocations, withdrawal and final fate. This new edition makes full use of colour throughout with many additional photos included. The diagrams have been redrawn and a new section showing the unit formations has been added.Comprehensive in its coverage, ... Unknown localization key: "more"

abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959
A popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our facsimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The volume selected for reissue this Spring is abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959. This is in effect two books in one, abc British Railways Locomotives and the Locoshed Book. The abc lists all the locomotives which were in service at that time and the Locoshed book shows where those engines were allocated at the time the listings were compiled. The year covered in this volume is a particularly interesting one. By now, many of the new diesel classes conceived as a consequence of the BR modernisation plan of 1955, were coming into service though the steam locomotive was still supreme across most of the network, and indeed, new BR Standard steam locomotives were still under construction. The B T H and North British Type 1 Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives - British Railways Classes 15 and 16
The British Railways ‘Pilot Scheme’ orders of 1955 included ten BTH and ten NBL Type 1 locomotives, these being introduced during 1957-61 for use in East London, and on the Great Eastern and London, Tilbury & Southend lines. The BTH fleet subsequently expanded to forty-four, as a consequence of their light axle-loading and the availability of spare manufacturing capacity which BR chose to exploit in their quest to eliminate steam traction.Further construction of these two classes ceased after the fifty-four units, with preference being given to the highly reliable English Electric product which by mid-1962 had proliferated to 128 examples. The NBL fleet survived until 1968, being withdrawn after ten years of indifferent performance. The BTH locomotives followed by 1971, although four lingered on as carriage pre-heating units. Dramatic reductions in goods traffic during the 1960s/70s particularly impacted local trip and transfer freight duties, the ‘bread and butter’ work for the Type 1s, and it was inevitable that the less successful classes were retired from traffic first. This book looks at the short history of these two classes, making extensive use of archive sources, combined with the primary observations of numerous enthusiasts. Our reprints of the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that ran from the 1940s through to the 1960s are always welcomed, not only by that generation of enthusiasts who used them when they first came out, but also by those who were not around at the time. They are wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The latest addition to this series is that of the Combined Volume which was published in 1954. This was a very interesting period in the development of the BR steam locomotive fleet in the 1950s. There were many venerable pre-grouping classes still around and thousands of locomotives built or designed by the Big Four, but by 1954 all of the British Railways Standard classes were in production, including the unique Class 8 Pacific No 71000 Duke of Gloucester and the first of the 9Fs which entered service that year. This was a  fascinating year and abc British Railway Locomotives Combined Volume 1954 is a very welcome addition to this series.

Great British Steam Locomotives that Made History - Rosa Matheson
The industrial revolution and the age of steam were intertwined, each pushing the boundaries of the other, and the creation of steam locomotives changed the world forever. This book looks back over some of the most significant and beloved of Britain’s steam locomotives, also charting the developments in railway history along the way. Many of the locomotives featured were ‘firsts’, with dramatic interest in their technology, the level of public fascination and love continuing to this day. This book charts changes in railway history around Britain from the early days of steam, the Penny-darren of 1804, now accepted as the first passenger carrying steam locomotive on a railway track; Locomotion No.1, celebrated as the first ‘formal’ railway line to carry fare paying passengers in 1825; Stephenson’s Rocket of 1829; GWR’s broad-gauge North Star from 1832; the world famous Flying Scotsman; LNER’s Mallard; BR’s Britannia; right up to the new-build steam locomotives with the impressive Tornado.

Industrial Locomotives & Railways of The North East - Gordon Edgar
Continuing his series of regional books reviewing the industrial railways of England, Wales and Scotland, author Gordon Edgar looks at the railways of what is today Northumbria, County Durham and Teesside, covering a period of the last six decades, with an emphasis upon the former National Coal Board railways. This is the eighth volume in the series, covering an area once proudly boasting widespread coal mining, steelmaking and shipbuilding activities, as well as numerous other traditional industries large and small, most now sadly history. The industrial railway diversity that one could have witnessed in this region up until the latter part of the twentieth century was arguably unequalled in Britain. The National Coal Board’s Lambton, Hetton, Bowes, Derwenthaugh, Ashington and Backworth railway systems, and the steel and ironworks complexes at Consett, Lackenby and Skinningrove, and Doxford’s shipyard in Sunderland are just some of the locations familiar to many industrial railway enthusiasts, all of which are covered. Far-reaching changes in this region over the last half-century sadly leave just three bona-fide industrial railway locations featured in this book surviving today.Primarily utilising previously unpublished photographs, the author offers a fascinating insight into the industrial railways and locomotives of this region, endeavouring to ... North British Type 2 B-B Diesel-Hydraulic Locomotives, BR Class 22 - Volume 1 - Setting the Scene - Anthony P Sayer
The British Railways ‘Pilot Scheme’ orders of 1955 included six Type 2 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by the North British Locomotive Co., these being introduced during 1959 for use on the Western Region. Without operational experience, a further fifty-two locomotives were delivered between 1959 and 1962. The fleet survived intact until 1968, when approximately half of the class was withdrawn as a result of declining traffic levels across the UK, with successive National Traction Plans progressively selecting the less successful, non-standard and ‘numerically challenged’ classes for removal from traffic. All fifty-eight locomotives were withdrawn by New Years Day, 1972. This book, the first of two, sets the scene surrounding the short history of the Class 22s covering the introduction of the fleet, technical aspects, appearance design, delivery and acceptance testing, works histories and allocations. Detailed individual histories of each of the fifty-eight locomotives are included.

The Acquired Wagons of British Railways Volume 7 - David Larkin
British Railways was created in 1948 when the Great Western, the London, Midland & Scottish, the London & North Eastern and the Southern were taken into public ownership. It inherited all their locomotives, passenger and goods rolling stock. Whilst much has been published on BR locomotives and passenger stock, accurate and detailed coverage of the large inventory of vehicles used to convey the huge volumes of goods traffic carried by the railways at that time, is less readily available. This new series, of which this will be the penultimate volume, sets out to provide that information. This book deals mostly with two types of vehicles inherited by BR, the relatively small number of Ballast Plough Brake Vans and a huge fleet of hopper wagons of all types and capacities. Included in this category are hoppers of both wooden and steel construction which were used for a range of traffic flows including coke, coal and loco coal, iron ore and ballast. These vehicles included both those which had been part of the inventories of the companies nationalised in 1948 and those that came from private businesses. This volume, as with the others in the series is illustrated throughout with around 200 black and ... Traditional Signalling on British Railways - Robert Hendry
Signalling on British Railways underwent massive change from Nationalisation in 1948 to privatisation in the 1990s, but throughout this period much of the network’s infrastructure dated from the era of the Big Four and the pre-Grouping companies. The variety of traditional signalling in use in the BR era, from the pre-Grouping infrastructure and mechanical signalling up to BR-built signal boxes prior to the conversion to colour-light signalling, is explored here. The principles of signalling operation are also explained. In this book author Robert Hendry presents a fascinating insight into traditional signalling on British railways through a wealth of rare and previously unpublished images.

British Railways Freight Terminals Since 1960 - Paul Shannon
Arguably, since the 1920s but markedly since the 1960s, the railways have been fighting a losing battle with the road transport to retain their share of freight traffic. Gone are the days when almost every British passenger station had its own goods yard, handling all kinds of freight in wagonload quantities for distribution in the local area. That network of general freight terminals was gradually reduced and, eventually, eliminated, as the railway lost out to its main competitor, the lorry, with British Rail effectively throwing in the towel in relation to wagonload traffic with the demise of the Speedlink network in the 1990s. At the same time, rail freight has developed new markets for heavy trainload operations. That growth has led to the setting up of specialised terminals for aggregates, cement, steel, deep-sea containers and other bulk cargoes. The move from traditional wagonload traffic to lengthy and heavy block trains conveying only type of freight has been fully accomplished. This book illustrates and describes the huge transition that has taken place across the British railway network over the last 60 years in relation to the handling of goods traffic. It provides views of long-forgotten operations forming a stark contrast with ... Unknown localization key: "more"

British Railways in the 1970s and ’80s - Greg Morse
For British Rail, the 1970s was a time of contrasts, when bad jokes about sandwiches and pork pies often belied real achievements, like increasing computerisation and the arrival of the high-speed Inter-City 125s. But while television advertisements told of an ‘Age of the Train’, Monday morning misery continued for many, the commuter experience steadily worsening as rolling stock aged and grew ever more uncomfortable. Even when BR launched new electrification schemes and new suburban trains in the 1980s, focus still fell on the problems that beset the Advanced Passenger Train, whose ignominious end came under full media glare. In British Railways in the 1970s and ’80s, Greg Morse guides us through a world of Traveller’s Fare, concrete concourses and peak-capped porters, a difficult period that began with the aftershock of Beeching but ended with BR becoming the first nationalised passenger network in the world to make a profit.

Following on from his popular series examining industrial steam in regions of the UK, Gordon Edgar looks at a series of fascinating workings around the world during the final days of steam in industry. A number of globe-trotting trips in the latter part of the twentieth century and early twenty-first produced a remarkable record of steam at work in locations as varied as Germany, Austria, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Cuba, Java, India and China. With stunning, evocative photographs that capture not only the final days of these industrial workhorses but also the atmosphere of the environments in which they toiled, including opencast coal mines, quarries, steelworks and sugar plantations, this is a fitting tribute to an important aspect of international industrial history. The volume focuses on scenes captured in the twenty-first century.

British Railways Diesel Electric Classes 44 to 46 - Fred Kerr
Derby Works introduced the first mainline Diesel to UK service with the production of LMS 10000 in 1947, although mainline diesels had previously been tested on post-Grouping main lines prior to being exported. When British Railways'' Modernization Plan of 1955 was initiated by a Pilot Scheme to identify the best features for a future standard diesel fleet, Derby Works upgraded the design to produce its Type 4 - later Class 44 - locomotive that ultimately spawned 193 locomotives encompassing 3 variants which powered trains throughout the UK network.Fred Kerr lived close to the Midland Main Line in Northamptonshire and observed the class from their introduction in May 1959 to their final withdrawal in the 1980s and has amassed a collection of images showing them working both freight and passenger duties throughout the UK but particularly on the Midland Main Line where the Class 45 variant held sway for nearly 25 years. This album contains images from his extensive collection and, supported by a brief text, reflects the history of the 3 variants by showing the variety of services which they powered and the wide range of locations where class members were to be found.

English Electric Type 2 Bo-Bo 'Baby Deltic' Locomotives - Anthony P Sayer
The British Railways ‘Pilot Scheme’ orders of 1955 included ten English Electric Type 2 diesel-electric locomotives deploying Napier ‘Deltic’ engines. These locomotives, more colloquially known as the ‘Baby Deltics’, were introduced into traffic during 1959 for use on the Eastern Region of British Railways. This book looks at the history of the Class 23s, making extensive use of available but previously unpublished archive material, covering their introduction, technical idiosyncrasies, appearance design and performance. Issues with the original ‘Deltic’ engines were ultimately dealt with via a major rehabilitation exercise during the 1963-65 period; whilst various re-engining options were considered , including a new ‘U’ series English Electric high-speed engine design, the original Napier engines were ultimately retained. The work involved in the whole rehabilitation process is discussed in detail using internal English Electric archive material and forms a central focus of research. The fleet survived intact until 1968, when withdrawal commenced as a direct result of declining traffic levels across the UK, with successive National Traction Plans progressively selecting the less successful, non-standard and ‘numerically-challenged’ classes for removal from traffic. All ten locomotives were withdrawn by March 1971. Individual locomotive histories, allocations, fire and accident incidents, liveries and detail differences, storage ... Railways Remembered: North East England - Jenkins Martin, Charles Roberts
The north east of England was the crucible of the railway revolution in the early nineteenth century. The Stockton & Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825, was the world''s first public railway to use steam locomotives. As the national network developed, the East Coast Main Line passed through the region on its way from London to Edinburgh and virtually every part of the area was linked to a large and complex web of lines which were built to serve coal mines and other heavy industries as well as communities across the region. As the century developed, by a process of expansion and amalgamation, the North Eastern Railway came to dominate the area. This became part of the LNER group in 1923 though with the formation of British Railways in 1948, the new North Eastern Region of BR, with its distinctive orange signage, served an area closely comparable to that of the old NER itself. This new colour album explores the railways of the north east from the 1950s through to the 1970s using largely hitherto unpublished images from the files of the Online Transport Archive. These cover steam, diesel and electric traction and whilst focusing on the main line railways, ... Unknown localization key: "more"

A4 Pacific Locomotives - Peter Tuffrey
The ''A4'' class of Pacific locomotives, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway in the 1930s, was arguably the most distinctive and most famous type of steam locomotive built in Britain. Their streamlined design not only reflected the art deco and modernist style of the era but was also functional, enabling them to travel efficiently at high speeds. On 3 July 1938 the most famous locomotive in the class, Mallard, broke the world speed record for a steam locomotive, travelling at 126mph. This record has never been broken.A total of 35 of these beautiful locomotives were built from 1935-38. The first four were originally painted silver, included the word ''silver'' in their names, and were built to haul the glamorous new ''Silver Jubilee'' train from London and Newcastle. Their success led to a second batch being built from 1937-38, named after birds, LNER directors or British empire countries, for new streamlined services from London King''s Cross to Edinburgh and to Bradford/Leeds.Leading up to Mallard''s world-record run, the A4s broke several other speed records and the efficiency of Gresley''s elegant design ensured they continued in top link service into the BR era. particularly London-Edinburgh but also ... Robinson Eight-coupled Locomotives - Jeremy Clements
Starting in 1902 with three 0-8-0s for the Great Central Railway, J G Robinson''s heavy freight locomotive fleet grew rapidly as part of General Manager Sam Fay''s strategy to rescue the company from financial difficulties. At Grouping, the GCR passed on 241 well-built, powerful and efficient eight-coupled locomotives to the newly formed London & North Eastern Railway. In a parallel development, the Robinson 2-8-0 was adopted in 1917 as a standard type for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers. More than 500 were constructed by several manufacturers, over 300 being sent across the Channel to support the British forces in France. Their later story included short-term loans to nine railway companies, sales to four UK companies and operators in China and Australia. In 1941, 92 were requisitioned for military service in the Middle East for deployment in Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and in 1952 five more were sent to Egypt. This work surveys a large, complex locomotive family that saw service on four continents between 1902 and the early 1970s. It covers the signature 2-8-0s, the original 0-8-0s, the unusual 0-8-4Ts, the 2-8-2T derivatives, Fay''s exploration of ten-coupled power, the sad story of the ''might-have-been'' Garratt, ... British Railways In Unseen Colour
We are indebted to the work of many famous railway photographers such as the late R C Riley and T B Owen who went to great trouble and considerable expense to record post war steam on BR in colour. This book celebrates the contributions of a photographer whose work has received little coverage up to now but who deserves to be seen in the first rank of those working in colour, Roy Vincent. Roy was railwayman based in both London and later the north-east but his work covers much of the country in geographical terms including the Southern and Western regions. Using quality film, he concentrated on taking pictures in good light and weather conditions and his portfolio contains scores of superb photographs which are being published here for the first time. In the pages of this new book is a succession of memorable images, with work-stained and weary machines interspersed with gleaming locomotives fresh out of works. This is a fitting and long overdue tribute to a fine and original photographer whose work has hitherto not received the credit it deserves.

The artist and conservationist David Shepherd had a life-long interest in railways. They were not only the subject of many of his paintings but he also actively supported railway preservation in the UK and abroad. He was instrumental in setting up the East Somerset Railway and owned a number of steam locomotives, the most famous of which were Class 9F Black Prince, later sold to the North Norfolk Railway, and BR 4MT The Green Knight, later sold to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. In this book J. C. Jeremy Hobson, professional author and David ShepherdÂ’s youngest son-in-law, has drawn on access to family archives, paintings, drawings and photographs, private diaries and reminiscences, to create a unique portrait of a remarkable manÂ’s life-long interest in railways with examples of his stunning paintings of steam locomotives showing these magnificent machines in their full working glory.

Britain's Railways in the 1970s - David Hayes
The 1970s was a unique period for Britain’s railways. Steam had not long been replaced by diesel traction, the West Coast Main Line electrification was well underway with new and more powerful locomotives, and the colourful ‘rail blue’ livery projected an image of a new and altogether cleaner railway – there was plenty to be optimistic about. It was also a good time for the railway photographer – much of the railway infrastructure and complex track layouts of the steam era remained intact, freight traffic was plentiful and invariably passed through marshalling yards for sorting, and there were plenty of locomotive classes of various shapes and sizes, often regionally based, to pique the interest. As well as this, though, the seeds were being sown for an altogether different railway – one where locomotive standardisation was being pursued as a means of lowering fleet maintenance costs, where the freight focus was a migration to block trains travelling from supplier directly to customer, avoiding the inevitable delay and expense of the marshalling yards, and one where track layouts were being simplified and streamlined to increase speed and reduce permanent way maintenance. The photographs in this book capture a flavour of the railways during this fascinating ... BR Steam in the North of England - John Whiteley
In this book John Whiteley provides a photographic survey of the last years of steam on British Railways in the North of England. The photographs cover the period from c. 1959/60 to the end of steam in the area in 1968. By the early 1960s British Rail was rapidly replacing steam with modern traction, but before the last steam locomotives were withdrawn the decade witnessed a glorious swansong for steam in the North of England. The area covered ranges from northern Derbyshire and northern Cheshire to include the last days of steam in the Peak District, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria up to the Scottish border. The use of GWR locomotives around Chester in the early 1960s is also included as well as steam in and around Manchester. This photographic survey of the last years of steam on BR in the North of England will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of the railways of this region.

Handbook for Railway Steam Locomotive Enginemen
The burgeoning of the railway preservation movement all across the United Kingdom in the last 50 years has meant that there are now a considerable amount of steam locomotives preserved, maintained and in full working order and being run in frequent public service by preservation societies on heritage lines. This means that there is a continuing need for a practical handbook to help drivers and those responsible for maintaining the locomotives in safe condition for public use, covering all the basics of steam locomotive construction, technology and operation - this book fulfils that need admirably. The book is a reprint of an official handbook issued for the education of and day-to-day use by British Railways enginemen in late 1957, when it was distributed to all members of the BR footplate grades concerned with steam power. In lucid terms, and with the aid of over 90 contemporary diagrams, many of which employ a variety of colours to distinguish, for example, saturated steam, superheated steam, exhaust steam, air, oil and water passages, the book provides an accessible guide to the basic principles of steam locomotive construction and operation.

We can now celebrate the 200 years anniversary of railways, which have served to connect communities across this country and across world countries. Our railways started with steam power in 1825, until steam was phased out by British Railways in 1968. Nowadays the preservation movement continues to provide the glorious spectacle of steam trains at work in many parts of the U.K. The preserved railways and the preserved locomotives running on the main line are making their own history, and it is part of this history that is covered by this book, which records many of the steam activities from 1986 to 2000. There are numerous locomotives pictured here which may never steam again as the costs of refurbishment, coupled with very much stricter safety requirements, preclude the reappearance of some old favourites. This book contains colour pictures from the author’s collection of large format slides and latterly some 35mm slides. The style is similar to the author’s previous books, using approximately of 200 pictures with informative captions to describe the scenes depicted, presented in chronological order. The enormous work of volunteers in continuing the development of the preservation movement cannot be underestimated, because without those efforts, there would be ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Western Region Steam Locomotive Depots - Laurence Waters
From the opening of the Great Western Railway in 1838 through to the end of steam traction on the Western Region in 1965 the ‘engine shed’ formed an important role in both the infrastructure and operation of the railway. As the Great Western system expanded so did the need for larger locomotive servicing facilities and from the 1870s right through to the 1930s many sheds were rebuilt into larger locomotive depots or in some cases replaced by entirely new structuresNationalisation of the railways in 1948 saw the formation of the ‘British Railways Western Region’. Apart from a few early sub-shed closures the number of Western Region steam depots and sub-sheds remained almost unaltered until the regional boundary changes of 1958.Using black and white and colour images from the Great Western Trust archive at Didcot, the book illustrates Western Region steam depots and ‘sub sheds’ that were in operation in the mid 1950s. With many previously unpublished photographs the book should interest modellers, historians and enthusiasts of the Western Region.Today the unique atmosphere of the steam ‘shed’ can be still be experienced at Didcot, where the original 1932 locomotive shed forms the centrepiece of the Didcot Railway Centre.

A History of British Rail Engineering Limited - Richard Marks
In 1970, British Railways Board established a new subsidiary company to take over the design, manufacture and maintenance of its rolling stock. British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) was born. The company drove a new era of rail technology and this new company history tells the dazzling story of BREL from its humble beginnings up until its sale in 1992 during the controversial privatisation of Britain’s railways. The company’s work in designing the iconic new trains that would take Britain’s railways into a new era is examined alongside its relationship with subcontractors and private manufacturers, as well as its tumultuous relationship with British Railways Board. BREL’s struggles to deal with the legacy of the outdated and obsolete stock and infrastructure it inherited are examined in the light of new research.BREL’s little known success as an international exporter of British designed and manufactured trains is explored fully. The company’s heyday as a leading-edge technology manufacturer and its relationship with British Railways Research Division left not only a history of iconic trains but a legacy which is still with us on today’s modern railway.

Edwardian Steam - Philip Atkins
On the eve of WWI, there were 19,245 route miles of railway in Britain. Apart from some suburban electrification in a few major city areas, this vast network was worked entirely by steam locomotives.  Each year several hundred locomotives were built while others were scrapped. The picture was therefore continually changing almost by the day, as between 1901 and 1914 a new build locomotive design or variant appeared somewhere, on average, at the rate of one every three weeks. The dramatic increase in the size of locomotives during this fairly short period was also unparalleled.  It was goods rather than passenger traffic that earned most revenue for many railways. Railway engines consumed about 13 million tons of coal annually and as the pit head price of coal steadily increased, the railways sought ways to reduce their coal consumption and thereby maintain profitability, superheating being an important innovation in this respect at this time.  This book closely examines all aspects of steam operations in this era, making use of largely overlooked published official statistics to present a detailed and fascinating picture of the time which has been described as the Golden Age of Britain''s railways

Iron, Stone and Steam - Tim Bryan
Isambard Kingdom Brunel: Victorian icon, engineer, artist, architect, designer and visionary, entrepreneur and celebrity. His astounding feats changed the British landscape, and this new book tells the story of his awe-inspiring achievements and innovations as a railway engineer.New to the developing world of railways in the early 1830s, Brunel soon came to rival George and Robert Stephenson, as he embarked on what he called ‘the finest work in England’. The construction of the Great Western Railway, arguably the most revolutionary of British railways, opened in 1841.Tim Bryan, Director of the Brunel Institute at the SS Great Britain, chronicles how, in almost thirty tumultuous years, Brunel created a rail network covering much of the South and West of England, the Midlands and Wales. The network included masterpieces like Paddington Station and the Royal Albert Bridge and still carries millions of travellers today. The book also describes how Brunel’s successes were matched by ‘monumental failures’ – the ill-fated atmospheric system used on the South Devon Railway, and the far-reaching implications of the broad gauge for his railways, which ultimately cost millions of pounds when abolished.Iron, Stone and Steam is also the story of the great engineer’s complex character and the roles of the ... Sealink British Ferries - Ian Collard
Sealink’s antecedents go back to the packet boats of the days before steam. The invention of the steam engine greatly assisted the development of the railways and led to the growth of the packet boats. The private railway companies recognised the need for an integrated transport system which included operating services across the sea routes. The Big Four railway companies were nationalised in 1948 and their shipping services came under the control of the British Transport ommission. In 1968 a Shipping and International Services Division of the British Railways Board was formed. This separate division operated under the brand name of Sealink. In 1979 the assets of the Shipping and International Services Division were transferred to Sealink UK Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary company. With a wealth of previously unpublished images, Ian Collard tells the fascinating story of this unique shipping company.

Non-Pool Freight Stock 1948-1968: Privately-Owned and European Vehicles (Including APCM, Dorman Long, Esso & Gulf) - David Larkin
The first five Kestrel Railway Books volumes by David Larkin looked at the revenue-earning wagon fleet operated by British Railways and its successor, British Rail. These were followed by a series of three books looking at the specially-designed wagons that were used for track maintenance, and then three volumes covering the parcels and passenger-rated stock. This is the first of a series covering the ex-private owner fleet. When BR was created, it was intended that it should own all railway rolling stock, but legal action by some of the larger wagon-owning companies delayed things until 1951. Non-Pool wagons were defined as privately-owned wagons allowed to run over railways owned or operated by the British Transport Commission. This series sets out the types of wagon eligible to be classified as Non-Pool and lists them individually with details of numbers carried, capacity and registration details where known. Volume 1 covers owners with initials A to H, and Volume 2 (expected to be published in October 2016) deals with the remaining owners alphabetically.

Locomotives of the Isle of Wight Railways - JCH Faulkner, TP Cooper, Roger Silsbury, RJ Maycock
Island railways hold an enduring fascination for railway enthusiasts and although many books have been published about the railways on the Isle of Wight surprisingly very little has been written about the locomotives which ran on the island.Apart from a modest volume written by the late D.L.Bradley which was published in 1982, there has been no attempt to compile a definitive history of all the locomotives which have seen service on the island since the opening of the first line, that between Cowes and Newport, on 14 June 1862. Compiled by four members of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway who are donating their royalties from the sale of this book to the IWSR to further its activities, this book seeks to redress that deficiency.Building on the acquired rights of the Bradley book, this history uses every available resource to present as much information as possible on all the locomotives which worked on the island and includes a selection of colourised images to depict as accurately as possible the variety of liveries carried by those locomotives. The story is brought up to date with the inclusion of details of locomotives which are now preserved on the Isle of Wight, some ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Class 68 and Class 88 Locomotives - John Jackson
In 2012, Direct Rail Services (DRS) placed an order with Vossloh (now Stadler Rail) for its first Class 68 diesel locomotives. The fleet size has now grown to thirty-four. Their later order was for ten Class 88 locomotives, an electro-diesel variant of the Class 68. Since delivery, the 68s have worked alongside the operator’s fleet of ageing, so-called ‘heritage’, locos. With these locos now at their disposal, they are surely destined to be the mainstay of the company’s fleet for some time to come.In addition to their use as a mixed traffic locomotive for DRS themselves, the company lease these locos to passenger train operators such as Scotrail and Chiltern Railways. Their wide range of duties is covered in this book. Here, John Jackson tracks the first few years of their use on an increasing variety of workings.
