Bitter Lemons of Cyprus - Lawrence Durrell
Cyprus, 1953. As the island fights for independence from British colonial rule, ancient conflicts between Turkish and Greek Cypriots trouble the glittering Mediterranean waters. Into the brewing political storm enters Lawrence Durrell, yearning for the idyllic island lifestyle of his youth in Corfu. He settles into a dilapidated villa, and with his poet's eye for beauty - and passable Greek - vividly captures the moods and atmospheres of island life in a changing world. Whether collecting folklore or wild flowers, describing the brewing revolution or eccentric local characters, Durrell is a magician with words: and the result is not only a classic travel memoir, but an intimate portrait of a community lost forever.

The Black Book - Lawrence Durrell
''The most exhilarating surge of language, style and sordid English manners [in] literature.'' DBC Pierre ''A wild, passionate, brilliantly gaudy and flamboyant extravaganza ... Richly obscene, energetically morbid, very often very funny ... Above all, stylistically and verbally inventive.'' ObserverDeath Gregory has disappeared, abandoning his diaries in a seedy London hotel. Discovered by Lawrence Lucifer, they depict a clique of intellectuals living a life of squalid debauchery: struggling writers and artists consumed by loves, lusts, and a quest for innovation. But as they satisfy violent appetites of the flesh - and mind - their descent into darkness accelerates ... Written when he was only 24, Lawrence Durrell described his controversial third novel as ''a two-fisted attack on literature by an angry young man of the thirties'' in which he ''first heard the sound of my own voice.'' First published in Paris in 1938, it was banned in Britain for nearly four decades due to its ''obscenity'' (influenced by Durrell''s friend Henry Miller). Cyprus 1974 - Andrew Southam
On 15 July 1974, Archbishop Makarios III, the democratically elected president of Cyprus, narrowly escaped death when the Cyprus National Guard shelled the presidential palace in Nicosia. Makarios and his bodyguards fled just as the assault was delayed by a broken tank. The coup was backed by the Greek military dictatorship, or Junta, which had taken power in 1967 and saw Makarios as a communist sympathizer. The Junta’s leader, Dimitrios Ioannidis, assumed that the CIA and the West would support the archbishop's removal, a major miscalculation. The coup's aftermath led to the installation of Nicos Sampson as president, sparking fears in Turkey of Cyprus uniting with Greece (Enosis), which threatened Turkey’s security. In response, Turkey invaded Cyprus, sparking conflict with Greek and Cypriot National Guard forces. The crisis nearly led to war between Greece and Turkey. Efforts by Henry Kissinger and British Foreign Secretary James Callaghan to prevent further escalation were complicated by the political turmoil in the U.S. and Britain’s vulnerability due to its military presence on the island. By August, the conflict resulted in 3,000 deaths and 200,000 displaced people. Cyprus remains divided today. Greeks, Latins, and the Church in Early Frankish Cyprus - Christopher D. Schabel
The studies here deal with the first half of the period of almost four centuries (1191-1571) when Greeks, Latins, and other groups coexisted on the island of Cyprus. Under the French-speaking Lusignan dynasty, the Kingdom of Cyprus gradually evolved from a fragmented cluster of indigenous and alien linguistic and religious communities to a more unified yet still multicultural society of Cypriots by the end of the reign of King Hugh IV (1324-59), a process that was redirected in the wake of the Genoese invasion in the 1370s. The ecclesiastical history of Early Frankish Cyprus has traditionally been seen as one long national (Greek) struggle against foreign (Latin) efforts at forced doctrinal and ritual assimilation. In this volume Dr Schabel presents a more nuanced view, with new interpretations of general trends and specific events in the history of the Greek and Latin clergies on the island, the involvement of the crown, the papacy, and the eastern and western emperors, and the relations among these groups and individuals.

Music and the Forms of Life - Lawrence Kramer
Inventors in the age of the Enlightenment created lifelike androids capable of playing music on real instruments. Music and the Forms of Life examines the link between such simulated life and music, which began in the era's scientific literature and extended into a series of famous musical works by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Music invented auditory metaphors for the scientific elements of life (drive, pulse, sensibility, irritability, even metabolism), investigated the affinities and antagonisms between life and mechanism, and explored questions of whether and how mechanisms can come to life. The resulting changes in the conceptions of both life and music had wide cultural resonance at the time, and those concepts continued to evolve long after. A critical part of that evolution was a nineteenth-century shift in focus from moving androids to the projection of life in motion, culminating in the invention of cinema. Weaving together cultural and musical practices, Lawrence Kramer traces these developments through a collection of case studies ranging from classical symphonies to modernist projections of waltzing specters by Mahler and Ravel to a novel linking Bach's Goldberg Variations to the genetic code. Lady Chatterley's Lover - David Herbert Lawrence
Notes and Introduction by David Ellis, University of Kent at Canterbury. With its four-letter words and its explicit descriptions of sexual intercourse, Lady Chatterley''s Lover is the novel with which D.H. Lawrence is most often associated. First published privately in Florence in 1928, it only became a world-wide best-seller after Penguin Books had successfully resisted an attempt by the British Director of Public Prosecutions to prevent them offering an unexpurgated edition. The famous ''Lady Chatterley trial'' heralded the sexual revolution of the coming decades and signalled the defeat of Establishment prudery.Yet Lawrence himself was hardly a liberationist and the conservativism of many aspects of his novel would later lay it open to attacks from the political avant-garde and from feminists. The story of how the wife of Sir Clifford Chatterley responds when her husband returns from the war paralysed from the waist down, and of the tender love which then develops between her and her husband''s gamekeeper, is a complex one open to a variety of conflicting interpretations. This edition of the novel offers an occasion for a new generation of readers to discover what all the fuss was about; to appraise Lawrence''s bitter indictment of modern industrial society, and to ask ... Women in Love - David Herbert Lawrence
Introduction and Notes by Dr Jeff Wallace, University of Glamorgan.Lawrence''s finest, most mature novel initially met with disgust and incomprehension. In the love affairs of two sisters, Ursula with Rupert, and Gudrun with Gerald, critics could only see a sorry tale of sexual depravity and philosophical obscurity. Women in Love is, however, a profound response to a whole cultural crisis. The ''progress'' of the modern industrialised world had led to the carnage of the First World War.What, then, did it mean to call ourselves ''human''? On what grounds could we place ourselves above and beyond the animal world? What are the definitive forms of our relationships - love, marriage, family, friendship - really worth? And how might they be otherwise? Without directly referring to the war, Women in Love explores these questions with restless energy. As a sequel to The Rainbow, the novel develops experimental techniques which made Lawrence one of the most important writers of the Modernist movement.

The Bitter Landscapes of Palestine - David Shulman, Margaret Olin
A photographic and verbal account of the landscapes of Palestine. This book offers a portrait of the lives and struggles of Palestinians living in the occupied Palestinian territories on the West Bank, in particular the South Hebron Hills and the Jordan Valley. Among the topics highlighted are house demolitions; confrontations between Palestinian shepherds or farmers and Israeli settlers, soldiers, and police; the daily challenges of sheer existence posed by the occupation system, intent on pushing Palestinians off their land; and the tenacity and courage that these conditions require. The book endeavors to impart to the reader a sense of the beauty of the landscape, the sound of the language, the taste of friendships, and the richness of a way of life that is threatened with extinction. Voices of activists, both Palestinian and Jewish, are also present. The introduction sets forth, in brief, the historical context that generated present realities in Palestine as well as the history of the authorsÂ’ partnership. The bookÂ’s viewpoint reflects many years of activism on the peace and human rights front in Palestine as well as an ongoing conversation between two authors who have experienced together the continually renewed astonishment that comes with such encounters. Are There Laws Of Innovation? - Lawrence Juen-yee Lau, Yanyan Xiong
Beyond real GDP, innovative capacity is an important indicator of the economic strength of a nation. By studying innovative capacity and other indicators of success in innovation across the Group-of-Seven (G7) Countries, the East Asian Newly Industrialised Economies (EANIEs) and Mainland China, this book will systematically establish a positive relationship between innovation outputs and inputs of different economies. In doing so, it seeks to answer the question — are there laws of innovation? It seeks to identify the determinants of innovation at the economy-wide level, ascertain whether these determinants are similar across different economies, and find suitable metrics for comparing relative success in innovation across different economies. It concludes that innovation, rather than being a stroke of good fortune, comes from research and development activities conducted over a long period of time, and sheds light on future trends and areas for further research.
