Mountolive - Lawrence Durrell
Lose yourself in the thrilling political intrigue and tangled love affairs of wartime Egypt: Durrell''s epic modern classic, introduced by William Boyd (bestselling author of Any Human Heart and Restless).''A master at creating and handling tension ... I was fascinated from the start.'' Wilbur SmithDavid Mountolive, a young English diplomat, has been obsessed with Egypt ever since a youthful love affair. Returning to Alexandria as British Ambassador just before World War Two, he unravels an intricate political and religious conspiracy - one that connects a web of wildly different characters, including an exiled schoolteacher and glamorous Egyptian couple. Mountolive gradually exposes the sinister underbelly of these tangled relationships, their deceptions and betrayals mirroring the explosive turmoil of the modern Middle East - and the result is Durrell''s most cinematic masterpiece. The Black Book - Lawrence Durrell
''The most exhilarating surge of language, style and sordid English manners [in] literature.'' DBC Pierre ''A wild, passionate, brilliantly gaudy and flamboyant extravaganza ... Richly obscene, energetically morbid, very often very funny ... Above all, stylistically and verbally inventive.'' ObserverDeath Gregory has disappeared, abandoning his diaries in a seedy London hotel. Discovered by Lawrence Lucifer, they depict a clique of intellectuals living a life of squalid debauchery: struggling writers and artists consumed by loves, lusts, and a quest for innovation. But as they satisfy violent appetites of the flesh - and mind - their descent into darkness accelerates ... Written when he was only 24, Lawrence Durrell described his controversial third novel as ''a two-fisted attack on literature by an angry young man of the thirties'' in which he ''first heard the sound of my own voice.'' First published in Paris in 1938, it was banned in Britain for nearly four decades due to its ''obscenity'' (influenced by Durrell''s friend Henry Miller). Vivid, surrealist, and haunting, The Black Book peers into the recesses of our souls: and establishes Durrell as a trailblazing stylist.''Stygian prose ... Words like stones, throwing, rockerying, mossing, churning, sharpening, bloodsucking, melting, and a hard firewater flows and rolls through them.'' Dylan Thomas''Genuine art ... Lavishly displays Durrell''s gift of language ... Verbal brilliance.'' New York Times ''The first piece of work by a new English writer to give me any hope for the future of prose fiction.'' T.S. Eliot''Durrell''s first major work ... Its showy brilliance is certainly that of a born writer ... Savage and obscene.''Guardian''Brilliantly strange ... It will astonish.'' Independent on Sunday

He returned to England in 1928 before settling on the island of Corfu with his family. In 1945 he joined the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper, and in 1947 he led his first animal-collecting expedition to the Cameroons. He later undertook numerous further expeditions, visiting Paraguay, Argentina, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Mauritius, Assam and Madagascar. His first television programme, Two in the Bush which documented his travels to New Zealand, Australia and Malaya was made in 1962; he went on to make seventy programmes about his trips around the world. Truly, there is magic here’ GUARDIAN Myself and Other Animals is a new book mosaicked from unpublished autobiographies, uncollected pieces and previously published extracts from Durrell’s work and archives. The result is an extraordinary journey through Durrell’s life in his own words, edited and introduced by his widow Lee Durrell. Drawing on a memoir that Durrell started writing before he became too ill to continue it, and an unfinished book from a trip to Australia in 1969 to the Great Barrier Reef, Northern Territory and Queensland, here is the unvarnished story of Durrell’s life, from touching family tributes to golden bats and pink pigeons. Moving from India to England and then to the always sun-lit Corfu, told with dry wit and insight into our fellow animals, here is the vivid finale of one of Britain’s most beloved conservationists and prose stylists. Audiokniha: Kdyby Durrell dorazil včas, možná by blboun nejapný nevymřel.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom - Thomas Edward Lawrence
Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the autobiographical account of T.E. Lawrence - also known as ''Lawrence of Arabia'' - of his service in the Arab Revolt during the First World War, published in Penguin Modern Classics.Although ''continually and bitterly ashamed'' that the Arabs had risen in revolt against the Turks as a result of fraudulent British promises of self-rule, Lawrence led them in a triumphant campaign which revolutionized the art of war. Seven Pillars of Wisdom recreates epic events with extraordinary vividness. In the words of E. M. Forster, ''Round this tent-pole of a military chronicle, Lawrence has hung an unexampled fabric of portraits, descriptions, philosophies, emotions, adventures, dreams''. However flawed, T.E. Lawrence is one of the twentieth century''s most fascinating figures. This is the greatest monument to his character and achievements, and formed the basis for the Oscar-winning film Lawrence of Arabia, staring Peter O''Toole and Alec Guinness. This edition includes maps, drawings by Eric Kennington, and index of place names and a preface by A.W. Lawrence.Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) was born in Wales and educated at Jesus and Magdalen Colleges, Oxford. He was commissioned on the outbreak of the First World War and in 1917 was officially attached to the staff of the Hejaz expeditionary force, under General Wingate. After the war, Lawrence was Advisor on Arab Affairs in the Middle Eastern Division of the Colonial Office. In 1927, embarrassed with the ''Lawrence of Arabia'' legend, he changed his name by deed poll to Shaw''. In addition to this book, of which Lawrence lost almost the whole manuscript at Reading station in 1919, he wrote Revolt in the Desert (1927) and The Odyssey of Homer (1935), a translation in prose. If you enjoyed Lawrence of Arabia, you might also like Wilfred Thesiger''s Desert Sands, available in Penguin Classics.''I am not much of a hero-worshipper, but I could have followed T.E. Kniha vypráví o šestiměsíční cestě, kterou v roce 1957 podnikli Gerald Durrell s manželkou do tehdejšího Britského Kamerunu, aby si, jak říká autor, nachytali vlastní zoologickou zahradu. His battalion of creatures has grown to include eleven puppies, a toad named Dierdre and an unwelcome infestation of scorpions. Yet the human visitors to their sun-drenched villa are even more curious, whether it is an innocent pair of American painters ripe for practical jokes, or a supercilious Count who barely survives an outing on Gerald’s home-made boat, the Bootle-bumtrinket. But any hopes of respectability are dashed as the tenants reveal themselves to be a host of eccentrics: from a painter of nudes to a pair of glamorous young nurses whose late-night shifts combined with an ever-revolving roster of gentleman callers leading to a neighbourhood rumour that Margo is running a brothel. Margo''s own two sons, Gerry and Nicholas, prove to be every bit as mischievous as their famous Uncle Gerald - and he himself returns periodically with weird and wonderful animals, from marmosets to monkeys, that are quite unsuitable for life in a Bournemouth garden.

D. H. Lawrence and Italy - D. H. Lawrence
In these impressions of the Italian countryside, Lawrence transforms ordinary incidents into passages of intense beauty.Twilight in Italy is a vibrant account of Lawrence''s stay among the people of Lake Garda, whose decaying lemon gardens bear witness to the twilight of a way of life centuries old. In Sea and Sardina, Lawrence brings to life the vigorous spontaneity of a society as yet untouched by the deadening effect of industrialization. And Etruscan Places is a beautiful and delicate work of literary art, the record of "a dying man drinking from the founts of a civilization dedicated to life."

The Complete Poems of D.H. Lawrence - David Herbert Lawrence
With an Introduction and Notes by David Ellis, University of Kent at Canterbury.Lawrence''s reputation as a novelist has often meant that his achievements in poetry have failed to receive the recognition they deserve. This edition brings together, in a form he himself sanctioned, his Collected Poems of 1928, the unexpurgated version of Pansies, and Nettles, adding to these volumes the contents of the two notebooks in which he was still writing poetry when he died in 1930.It therefore allows the reader to trace the development of Lawrence as a poet and appreciate the remarkable originality and distinctiveness of his achievement. Not all the poems reprinted here are masterpieces but there is more than enough quality to confirm Lawrence''s status as one of the greatest English writers of the twentieth century.

Gerald Durrell, director and owner of Jersey Zoo, was internationally famous for his amusing books about collecting wild animals. The Overloaded Ark, his first, remains his funniest book. It describes an expedition to the remote territory of the Cameroons in West Africa, before independence.''A delightful book . . . You can feel his bush-shirt sticking to his back . . . Bagging a monitor, smoking out a Pangolin (scaly anteater), celebrating the capture of the rare Angwantibo (small lemur), bird liming for Giant Kingfishers on the warm, milky waters of Lake Soden: he communicates every detail of his experiences with just the right degree of zest.'' Lady Chatterley's Lover - David Herbert Lawrence
Notes and Introduction by David Ellis, University of Kent at Canterbury. With its four-letter words and its explicit descriptions of sexual intercourse, Lady Chatterley''s Lover is the novel with which D.H. Lawrence is most often associated. First published privately in Florence in 1928, it only became a world-wide best-seller after Penguin Books had successfully resisted an attempt by the British Director of Public Prosecutions to prevent them offering an unexpurgated edition. The famous ''Lady Chatterley trial'' heralded the sexual revolution of the coming decades and signalled the defeat of Establishment prudery.Yet Lawrence himself was hardly a liberationist and the conservativism of many aspects of his novel would later lay it open to attacks from the political avant-garde and from feminists. The story of how the wife of Sir Clifford Chatterley responds when her husband returns from the war paralysed from the waist down, and of the tender love which then develops between her and her husband''s gamekeeper, is a complex one open to a variety of conflicting interpretations. This edition of the novel offers an occasion for a new generation of readers to discover what all the fuss was about; to appraise Lawrence''s bitter indictment of modern industrial society, and to ask themselves what lessons there might be for the 21st century in his intense exploration of the complicated relations between love and sex.Â

The Rainbow - David Herbert Lawrence
With an Introduction and Notes by Lionel Kelly, University of Reading. In 1915, Lawrence''s frank representation of sexuality in The Rainbow caused a furore and the novel was seized by the police and banned almost as soon as it was published. Today it is recognised as one of the classic English novels of the twentieth century. The Rainbow is about three generations of the Brangwen family of Nottinghamshire from the 1840s to the early years of the twentieth century. Within this framework Lawrence''s essential concern is with the passional lives of his characters as he explores the pressures that determine their lives, using a religious symbolism in which the ''rainbow'' of the title is his unifying motif. His primary focus is on the individual''s struggle to growth and fulfilment within marriage and changing social circumstances, a process shown to grow more difficult through the generations. Young Ursula Brangwen, whose story is continued in Women in Love, is finally the central figure in Lawrence''s anatomy of the confining structures of English social life and the impact of industrialisation and urbanisation on the human psyche.

Yet, both posthumously and within her lifetime, she instead became known as a bitter, cantankerous and eccentric miser, and her reputation has been forever stained by the image of her maliciously seeding other people's gardens with thorns. The beginnings of this prickly myth can be traced back to her conspicuous absence at what should have been the pinnacle of her career: the Royal Horticultural Society's inaugural Victoria Medal of Honour Award ceremony, at which she was due to be one of only two female recipients. Universally interpreted as the rudest of snubs, nobody has ever stopped to question why Ellen wasn't there, or if she was really as difficult and mean as she has been portrayed ever since. Author, Sandra Lawrence, has been granted unparalleled access to her archives, and with it has uncovered the secrets behind this thorniness. This is a book with it all: gossip, sisters, rivalry, squandered inheritance, forbidden love, bad marriages and, at the heart of it all, trailblazing talent.

The Colour of Injustice - Lee Lawrence
Lee Lawrence was just eleven when his mother, Cherry Groce, was shot by police during a raid on the family''s south London home. It was an event that would spark a violent uprising and dominate his life for the next 30 years as he fought for justice and for the police to admit their wrongdoing.Along the way, Lee came across dozens of other cases, past and present, which made it clear that the racial prejudice and bias which resulted in his mother''s shooting had been in place for many decades, impacting the lives of thousands of innocent people .Through a deeply researched and fast-moving narrative, Lee Lawrence seamlessly combines historical fact with his dramatic first-hand experiences of racial injustice to present vivid stories - from the Somali sailor who was wrongly convicted of murder in Cardiff in 1952 to the assault on professional footballer Dalian Atkinson and from the hounding of Notting Hill''s Mangrove Club to Black Lives Matter - that chronicle how Britain''s Black community has been mistreated.Though there remains much work to be done, Lee Lawrence is also an inspiring guide who highlights the many positive changes that have taken place and outlines those still needing to be enacted. Against the backdrop of the hard-learned lessons of years gone by, The Colour of Injustice also lays the foundation for a pathway to the future to move towards a truly anti-racist society.

The Lion and the Dragon - James Lawrence
Napoleon warned ''Let China sleep; when she wakes, she will shake the world''. Lawrence James''s magisterial history analyses the relationship between Britain and China between the beginning of the Opium Wars in 1839 and the transfer of power in Hong Kong in 1997. THE LION AND THE DRAGON reveals the part that Britain played in the awakening of China, then covers relations between the two countries during the period when an aroused China did indeed shake the world. Lawrence James also follows the parallel trajectories of four competitive empires - the British, the Chinese, the Russian and the Japanese - during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and then the fortunes of a fifth imperial power, the United States. Successive British governments saw China as a source of wealth which needed to be protected. Local objections were seen off by force (the ''Opium'' wars of 1839-42, 1856-7 and 1859-60) whose results proved that the Qing emperors could not protect their country. Indian troops were deployed in each campaign and manned Britain''s small garrisons in Hong Kong, Shanghai and other Treaty ports. Yet Britain never sought to make China into another India. Rather it allowed the emperors and their officials to govern, so long as they were docile and amenable to British needs. Paramount were the internal stability and fiscal responsibility that were the lubricants of trade. A unified nation with economic and military muscle, and aware of its distant past as one of the great nations of the world, has been intent on reversing her recent history. Lawrence James vividly chronicles a time when this huge nation''s divisions encouraged foreigners to treat her as a treasure-house to be plundered at will. This warning from history explains why China''s present rulers brook neither dissent nor popular unrest.

Jako by Ursula s Birkinem a Gudrun s Geraldem ztělesňovali typickou lawrenceovskou polaritu lásky a nenávisti, vzniku a zániku, života a smrti, tvoření a ničení stupňovaného až k sebezničení.

Women in Love - David Herbert Lawrence
Introduction and Notes by Dr Jeff Wallace, University of Glamorgan.Lawrence''s finest, most mature novel initially met with disgust and incomprehension. In the love affairs of two sisters, Ursula with Rupert, and Gudrun with Gerald, critics could only see a sorry tale of sexual depravity and philosophical obscurity. Women in Love is, however, a profound response to a whole cultural crisis. The ''progress'' of the modern industrialised world had led to the carnage of the First World War.What, then, did it mean to call ourselves ''human''? On what grounds could we place ourselves above and beyond the animal world? What are the definitive forms of our relationships - love, marriage, family, friendship - really worth? And how might they be otherwise? Without directly referring to the war, Women in Love explores these questions with restless energy. As a sequel to The Rainbow, the novel develops experimental techniques which made Lawrence one of the most important writers of the Modernist movement.

Lady Chatterley's Lover - David Herbert Lawrence
Lyric and sensual, D.H. Lawrence's last novel is one of the major works of fiction of the twentieth century. Filled with scenes of intimate beauty, explores the emotions of a lonely woman trapped in a sterile marriage and her growing love for the robust gamekeeper of her husband's estate. The most controversial of Lawrence's books, Lady Chatterly's Lover joyously affirms the author's vision of individual regeneration through sexual love. The book's power, complexity, and psychological intricacy make this a completely original work--a triumph of passion, an erotic celebration of life.

Lady Chatterley's Lover - D. H. Lawrence
Inspired by the long-standing affair between D. H. Lawrence’s German wife and an Italian peasant, Lady Chatterley’s Lover follows the intense passions of Constance Chatterley. Trapped in an unhappy marriage to an aristocrat whose war wounds have left him paralyzed and impotent, Constance enters into a liaison with the gamekeeper Mellors. Originally banned in multiple countries, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is an unapologetic portrayal of pleasure recognized as Lawrence’s “best novel” (Anais Nin) and “one of the most important works of fiction of the century” (Archibald MacLeish).
