advocacy in translanguaging education
Advocacy in Translanguaging Education
Vigorously advocates for realising translanguaging’s transformative potential in education. This book examines diverse aspects of advocacy for translanguaging as a legitimate educational practice. It advances a practical theory of the translanguaging of education that is informed by deliberative advocacy and based in evidence. Combinations of quantitative and qualitative research from preschool to higher and adult education in different parts of the world give insight into current translanguaging strategies and pedagogies. From translanguaging and transsemiotising in subject lessons such as Mathematics and Geography, to transdisciplinary engagement with poetry and music beyond the classroom, the findings contribute to the development of a practical theory of translanguaging in education, and demonstrate how translanguaging plays a part in everyday language learning and language use. This book is open access under a CC BY ND licence.

Transnational Advocacy in the Digital Era - Nina Hall
Winner, International Communication Book Award, International Studies AssociationShortlisted, 2023 Susan Strange Best Book PrizeHonorable Mention, 2023 Information Technology and Politics Best Book AwardTransnational Advocacy in the Digital Era explores the role of digital advocacy organizations, a major new addition to the international arena. These organizations derive power and influence from their ability to rapidly mobilize members on-line and off-line, and are shaping public opinion on many issues including climate change, trade, and refugees. Research in international relations (IR) has highlighted the influence of non-governmental organizations, which wield power through their expertise and long-term, moral commitment to an issue. However, no IR scholars have explored the spread and power of digital advocacy organizations. Nina Hall provides a detailed investigation of how these organizations have harnessed digitally networked power and established new advocacy strategies. They can quickly respond to the most salient issues of the day, and mobilize large memberships, to put pressure on politicians. She finds that these organizations operate in a globalized world but tackle transnational problems by focusing on national targets. This new generation of activists have formed a strong transnational network, but still see the state as the locus of power.

The Experiences of Disabled People in Physical Education
Bringing together a set of first-person accounts of physical education from the perspectives of disabled children and adults, this book puts disabled people’s voices in the foreground. The book provides a rich set of case-study material that deepens our understanding of the experiences of disabled people and that challenges students, researchers and practitioners to reflect critically upon their own positionality. The first part of the book discusses the ways in which disability has been conceptualized; how the voices of disabled people have sometimes been marginalized and how nondisability power has historically framed the narratives of disabled people in physical education literature. It also discusses the innovative methods used in this book – such as storytelling through recorded conversations and drawings, in addition to more traditional chapter writing - to empower disabled children and adults to act as authors of their own stories. Then the book presents the stories themselves, in a variety of written, narrative and alternative formats, a series of authentic accounts of the lived experiences of disabled people in physical education. Enabling Critical Pedagogy in Higher Education - Alan Smith, Mike Seal
An introduction to critical pedagogy for all those working within higher education.Critical Pedagogy is an approach that is fundamentally democratic, informal, non-hierarchical, determined by participants, privileges the oppressed and their perspectives and is committed to action. Higher education (HE), conversely, is often un-democratic, formal, hierarchical, determined by tutors and national bodies, re-inscribes existing privileges and is distant from lived experience. The book starts from the premise that critical pedagogies are possible in HE, while recognising the tensions to be ameliorated in trying to enact them. It re-examines the concept and explores its practical application at an institutional level, within the curriculum, within assessment, through learning and teaching and in the spaces in-between. The Critical Practice in Higher Education series provides a scholarly and practical entry point for academics into key areas of higher education practice. Each book in the series explores an individual topic in depth, providing an overview in relation to current thinking and practice, informed by recent research. The series will be of interest to those engaged in the study of higher education, those involved in leading learning and teaching or working in academic development, and individuals seeking to explore particular topics of professional interest. Effective Written Advocacy - Andrew Goodman
Is it possible to win your case before arriving at court? The author, a practising barrister for over thirty years, believes a highly focused approach to your written advocacy – correspondence, written negotiation, Part 36 offers and skeleton arguments, written opening notes for trial, closing submissions and costs submissions – will put you in the best possible position to do just that. The importance of oral advocacy in deciding cases is not in dispute, but increasingly judges form pre-trial opinions of the likely outcome from written material, notably the skeleton or opening note. The application, trial or appeal then becomes a process to measure the judge’s pre-formed view. The effective written closing submission will become part of the judgment. This book not only offers a practical and comprehensive guide to effective written advocacy, but provides worked examples drawn from real cases contributed from leading advocates such as Sue Carr QC, David Etherington QC, Lord Faulks QC, Andrew Hachhauser QC, Richard Lissack QC, Lord Pannick QC, and Lord Sumption.Of particular interest to both practitioners and students of litigation practice, the second edition offers 17 new examples together with a discussion on written advocacy in family and criminal cases. Equity in K-12 STEM Education - Engineering, and Medicine National Academies of Sciences, Board on Science Education, Division of Behavioral and Socia
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) live in the American imagination as promising tools for solving pressing global challenges and enhancing quality of life. Despite the importance of the STEM disciplines in the landscape of U.S. political, economic, and social priorities, STEM learning opportunities are unevenly distributed, and the experiences an individual has in STEM education are likely to vary tremendously based on their race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, gender, and a myriad of other factors. Equity in K-12 STEM Education: Framing Decisions for the Future approaches equity in STEM education not as a singular goal but as an ongoing process that requires intentional decision-making and action toward addressing and disrupting existing inequities and envisioning a more just future. Stakeholders at all levels of the education system - including state, district, and school leaders and classroom teachers - have roles as decision-makers who can advance equity. This consensus study report provides five equity frames as a guide to help decision-makers articulate short- and long-term goals for equity and make decisions about policy and practice.

Complexity Thinking in Physical Education
In the past two decades, complexity thinking has emerged as an important theoretical response to the limitations of orthodox ways of understanding educational phenomena. Complexity provides ways of understanding that embrace uncertainty, non-linearity and the inevitable ‘messiness’ that is inherent in educational settings, paying attention to the ways in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is the first book to focus on complexity thinking in the context of physical education, enabling fresh ways of thinking about research, teaching, curriculum and learning.Written by a team of leading international physical education scholars, the book highlights how the considerable theoretical promise of complexity can be reflected in the actual policies, pedagogies and practices of physical education. It encourages teachers, educators and researchers to embrace notions of learning that are more organic and emergent, to allow the inherent complexity of pedagogical work in PE to be examined more broadly and inclusively. In doing so, Complexity Thinking in Physical Education makes a major contribution to our understanding of pedagogy, curriculum design and development, human movement and educational practice.

The substantive contributions are bookended by an introduction and conclusion, which provide overviews of the history and current disposition of translation in KFL and a prospectus for its future, respectively. The education of teachers has become a major concern in the development and improvement of education systems across the world. In most countries the responsibility for preparing teachers is held by the universities, which has helped raise the status of teaching. This book addresses these concerns directly through a unique series of case studies by leading academics. The book suggests a number of key questions for universities to address in the education of teachers.

Understanding Research in Early Education - Margaret M. Clark
In this newly revised edition of Understanding Research in Early Education, Margaret Clark demonstrates the continuing relevance of research in the homes of young children and in preschool units. Through rigorous yet understandable language, the text stresses the importance of research, acknowledging how easy it can be, amidst the change and flood of documents on early education and care, to overlook the insights to be gained from past research. The author draws on her own studies, and those of others, to illustrate how to avoid common pitfalls, ask the right questions to inform studentsÂ’ research projects, and critically apply findings in the classroom or nursery. The book is one of the few texts for students to bring research alive, analysing key research to consider its limitations and the extent to which results are relevant to policy and practice. Without requiring any prior expertise in research and research methodologies, the third edition will prove invaluable for undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in early yearsÂ’ education, and practitioners undertaking continuing professional development. New content includes: fully revised chapters, an updated reference list, and a new chapter discussing current research on baseline assessment.

Indicators of Teaching Excellence in Higher Education - Aneta Hayes, Nicholas Garnett
An innovative take on the controversial question of teaching excellence in Higher Education (HE). After critiquing the very idea of ''measuring'' teaching excellence, Hayes and Garnett offer a critical approach to re-conceptualising and measuring teaching excellence and the controversies surrounding current teaching excellence rankings in the UK and internationally. The book proposes a shift in conceptualising the ways in which ‘evidence’ of teaching excellence can be produced by higher education providers. It suggests that measurement can be approached as developmental and can create agency for university leaders in making decisions about teaching and learning, in contrast to the performativity of current approaches. It emphasises the impact of teaching and learning processes on student outcomes and the skills required. The book guides readers through statistical approaches which allow exploration of the relationality of epistemic frames of teaching excellence in institutions, ie, how it is comprised of relationships an connections of what happens in classrooms and across the institution.Written in an accessible style tailored for HE leaders at all levels, this book is packed with real-world examples and opportunities for critical reflection, and can be understood by readers who have no prior knowledge of statistics.

Academic Belonging in Higher Education
The concept of belonging has been increasingly understood as the missing piece in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in higher education. This book explores the need to recognize and account for institutional-level factors that shape academic belonging, thereby improving student experience and outcomes.Though recent scholarship has identified several factors that are associated with student belonging in academics, there is little research that addresses what faculty can do in concrete terms to promote belonging, particularly in the domains where they have the most influence. The 12 chapters in this volume introduce readers to an array of collaborative, cutting-edge efforts to develop pedagogies, programs, strategies, and environments that help students develop academic belonging; that is, a sense of connection, competence, and confidence in academic domains. This book is written for higher education faculty, administrators, and researchers who wish to enhance their studentsÂ’ sense of academic belonging by taking informed, practical measures to make them feel valued and supported.

Global Citizenship Education in Praxis

This book is based on a decade of experience of combining all three concepts in the practice of an upper secondary school in Denmark which is linked to 16 schools in 15 countries. The book includes both a description of the project by the teachers who have taken part and an analysis by researchers who have worked with them to deliver the programme.

The Handbook on Music Business and Creative Industries in Education
Creative arts professions (music, media, and performance) remain in a period of flux. As the music industry and related fields adapt to changing business models, student interest in training for a career in the entertainment sector continues to rise. Though the expansion of global degree offerings in the creative industries expands each year, a "state of the field" on educational and pedagogical issues in the music business and the creative industries has yet to be created. Creative arts research encompasses a broad range of sectors in the music and entertainment industries; among these subfields include performance, technology, entrepreneurship, marketing, and social justice. Globally, formal training for such pathways happens most often in higher education. The Handbook provides a practical and engaging resource for faculty, staff, administrators, graduate students, and industry members working on the "front lines" in teaching and learning. It presents a wide range of global perspectives from academics, BIPOC voices, and ECRs from the United States, the UK, Europe, Australia, and Canada. Another factor that affects HE stakeholders is the absence of a versatile resource on the teaching and learning issues in music business and related fields. While The Handbook avoids overly prescriptive models of teaching and learning, the ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Decolonising Curricula and Pedagogy in Higher Education
This book brings together voices from the Global South and Global North to think through what it means, in practice, to decolonise contemporary higher education.Occasionally, a theoretical concept arises in academic debate that cuts across individual disciplines. Such concepts – which may well have already been in use and debated for some time - become suddenly newly and increasingly important at a particular historical juncture. Right now, debates around decolonisation are on the rise globally, as we become increasingly aware that many of the old power imbalances brought into play by colonialism have not gone away in the present. The authors in this volume bring theories of decoloniality into conversation with the structural, cultural, institutional, relational and personal logics of curriculum, pedagogy and teaching practice. What is enabled, in practice, when academics set out to decolonize their teaching spaces? What commonalities and differences are there where academics set out to do so in universities across disparate political and geographical spaces? This book explores what is at stake when decolonial work is taken from the level of theory into actual practice. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Third World Thematics.

Decolonial Options in Higher Education
In order for decolonization to avoid becoming yet another orthodoxy, this book argues that it is necessary to recognize the neoliberal ideologies and imperatives that drive so much work in universities in both the Global Norths and Global Souths, and to understand the enmeshment (both historical and ongoing) of universities in colonial practices. The chapters interrogate both these issues and the terms in which they are usually critiqued in order to identify the cracks and fissures within institutions that may enable decolonization to be leveraged as a praxis and a means of radical change. The chapters explore a range of issues across Higher Education including reparations, allyship, soft power, academic publishing and the politics of race within the university; together they represent an argument for the necessity of continually rethinking and re-making the theories, methods and assumptions of decolonization.
