The first presentation in book form of Josef Lada (1887-1957) as a major exponent of Central European art of the 20th century, and consequently also a master of world painting. This full-colour pictorial monograph is conceived around the premise that his perennial attachment to quintessentially Czech motifs, the Bohemian landscape, as well as Czech traditions and myths, was essential in enhancing the individuality of his output. In an introductory essay followed by ten thematically focused illustrated chapters, the author of this book documents both Josef Lada´s affinity with many leading figures of world culture (including not only artists), and the uniqueness and exceptionality of Lada´s painterly idiom. The artist´s greatness is seen as stemming primarily from his intrinsically defined creative method which accounts for the overall spirit of harmony emanating from his works and assigning him the status of an artist of worldwide import. The multi-authored monograph The Christian Roots of European Identity: A Central European Perspective offers views on European identity from academics based at universities in Central Europe: Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, the University of Prešov, Slovakia, and the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, Poland. Because of the high relevance of Islam in Europe today, a specialist from the Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich, Germany, was also invited to contribute to the book. eBook: This book reflects on the changing role of the judiciary in Central Europe. From among the many problems associated with the position of courts in contemporary states, the authors focus on various questions of how the courts’ decision-making can reinforce the overall coherence of the law, rather than contribute to its fragmentation. These questions are as follows, for example: What role can be played by the way judges use interpretation methods in terms of strengthening or weakening the law as a system? Is it legitimate for the courts to formulate, in their decisions, general principles and rules which have a potential to impact a very broad circle of future cases? What is the role of courts in strengthening the unity of law in relation to the other branches of government, and to international bodies and institutions? The first part of the book focuses on the theoretical and doctrinal foundations of judicial law-making in Central European countries. The authors deal with topics concerning the relationship among the judiciary, the constitution and statutory law; legal casuistry, as opposed to a systemic approach to law; judge’s decision-making in a situation where there is no a priori regulation; and the role of settled practice in terms of the traditional doctrine on the sources of law. eBook: During the Roman Period, the region of the basin of the Výrovka Stream, a left-bank tributary of the Elbe River on the border of the districts of Kolín and Nymburk, contains an extraordinary concentration of funerary sites of particular European importance and which belong to the representative part of the National Museum collection (Dobřichov-Pičhora, Dobřichov-Třebická). The determined settlements thus far are an unexploited source of knowledge about the development of these key regions in Bohemia during the Roman Period. In recent years, the assemblage from the Vrbová Lhota site stands out among the other settlement sites from the 3rd century AD. The collection of the finds is characterised by a large number of metal finds, among which Roman imports stand out: parts of bronze vessels, bells, brooches, fittings and a bronze anthropomorphic statue. Also known from the site are numerous indicators of non-ferrous metalworking activities – these are often interpreted as some of the evidence of the presence of elites, who were suppliers of raw materials (often of Roman origin), but also customers of the finale products. Additional evidence of the presence of local elites is a rich collection of bronze, silver and gold coins dated to the 2nd century up to the second half of the 3rd century AD. The aim of this study is to evaluate an unpublished set of finds along with new ones coming from surface surveys (2020–2021 seasons) and based on the results of the archaeometric study of selected metal finds. With the aid of archaeometry, we attempt to analyse the metallurgical activities at the site and their relationship with other sites in the Central European part of the Barbaricum. Oblast povodí říčky Výrovky, levobřežního přítoku Labe na hranici okresů Kolín a Nymburk v době římské představuje mimořádnou koncentraci evropsky významných funerálních lokalit, které patří k reprezentativní součásti sbírky Národního muzea (Dobřichov-Pičhora, Dobřichov-Třebická). Dosud známé sídlištní lokality představují dosud nevyužitý pramen k poznání vývoje tohoto klíčového regionu ve středních Čechách doby římské. Mezi jinými lokalitami ze 3. století n. l. vyniká poslední roky obohacovaný soubor z lokality Vrbová Lhota. Nálezový soubor se vyznačuje množstvím kovových nálezů, mezi nimiž vynikají římské importy: části bronzových nádob, zvonky, spony, kování a bronzová antropomorfní plastika. Z lokality jsou také známy četné doklady zpracování neželezných kovů – ty jsou často interpretovány jako jeden z dokladů přítomnosti elit, které byly dodavateli surovin (často římského původu), ale také odběrateli finálních výrobků. Dalším dokladem přítomnosti místních elit je bohatá sbírka bronzových, stříbrných a zlatých mincí, datovaná do 2. až 2. poloviny 3. století našeho letopočtu. Cílem této studie je zhodnocení dosud nepublikovaného souboru nálezů získaného povrchovou prospekcí za pomoci detektorů kovu a interpretace metalografických analýz, které na něm byly provedeny. Based on period documents and photography, the book maps in detail the development of Czech non-university sciences from the 18th century when the Society of Unknown Scholars in the Austrian Lands was founded in Olomouc. The main attention is focused on the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and its most important precursors, whether the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, active in 1953-1992, or earlier institutions, such as the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts (originally the Emperor Franz Joseph Czech Academy for Sciences, Literature and Arts), founded in 1890, or the Royal Bohemian Society of Learning, which existed already from the 18th century. Individual chapters are devoted also to Masaryk Academy of Labour and the main scientific institutions of the Germans living in the Czech lands - Gesellschaft zur Förderung Deutscher Wissenschaft, Kunst und Literatur in Böhmen (Society for the Support of German Sciences, Arts and Literature in Bohemia). Attention is, however, also devoted to our most important scientists with whose research results as well as the milieu in which they worked and work the reader is acquainted with through archival and contemporary sources.
