Císař a král Karel IV. se zasloužil o vybudování celé řady monumentálních staveb, ovšem zvláštní pozornost věnoval Svatovítské katedrále na Pražském hradě. Měla se stát vrcholným dílem gotiky - kamenným ztělesněním víry, symbolem královského majestátu, sídlem arcibiskupa, střediskem kultu zemských patronů, dějištěm slavnostních korunovací, pohřebištěm královským a vlastně i národním. Žádný jiný kostel v Evropě nespojoval tolik důležitých funkcí najednou. Projekt prvního stavitele katedrály Matyáše z Arrasu patřil už ve své době doslova ke stavebním zázrakům. A tak chrám zasvěcený původně neznámému sicilskému mučedníku Vítovi v srdci naší metropole budí i v 21. století úžas svou impozantní vznešeností z dálky, z blízka i zevnitř. Pražská katedrála není nejstarší, nejširší ani nejvyšší v Evropě. Její jedinečnost spočívá v ohromující vyváženosti. Celková délka stavby je 124 metrů a šířka transeptu dosahuje 60 metrů. Klenba se tyčí do výšky pres 33 metrů a téměř stometrová tzv. jižní věž dodává hlavnímu městu čitelné charakteristické panorama. Slovo Boží může v posvátném prostoru katedrály vyslechnout najednou víc než osm tisíc lidí. V anglickém jazyce.

Michel Fingesten se narodil ve vsi Bučkovice v českém Slezsku. Umění začal studovat v roce 1900 ve Vídni, záhy však odejel do Ameriky, kde cestoval a živil se kresbou pro noviny. Po návratu do Evropy v roce 1907 studoval rok u Franze Stucka v Mnichově. Pak opět vyrazil na cestu do Asie, kde strávil čtyři roky na východních mořích. V roce 1911 krátce pobýval v Paříži a poté se usadil v Berlíně. Zde se začal intenzivně věnovat grafické tvorbě. Brzy se stal známým umělcem, jeho díla byla často vystavována a oceňována pro svoji originalitu. Po roce 1933 byly jeho práce označeny za „zvrhlé umění“ a Fingesten odešel do Milána, kde organizoval výstavy a ve svém díle s ironií a sarkasmem komentoval vládu nacistů v Německu. Pro svůj židovský původ byl v roce 1940 internován v koncentračním táboře v Civitella del Tronto a později ve Ferramonti di Tarsia. Zemřel na infekci 8. 10. 1943 v Cosenze několik dní po osvobození americkou armádou.

Kromě přehodnocení práce hlavních představitelů (Mathesius, Vančura a další) a posuzování vývoje na literaturu orientovaných pražských studií angličtiny a s ohledem na pražský strukturalismus, se kniha zaměří na metodologické problémy oboru v souvislosti s transformací humanistické a stejně tak moderní filologie, hledání souvislostí mezi dvěma historicky odlišnými interdisciplinárními projekty: humanistickou filologií a strukturalistickou sémiologií. Spolu s Paulem de Man, lze tento odkaz identifikovat jako problém rétoriky - jeho těžko postřehnutelné postavení mezi gramatikou a logikou, strukturou a významem a performativitou a hodnotou jazyka. Přehodnocení tohoto problému se zdá mít zásadní význam pro pochopení dynamiky současné transformace filologie a strukturalistické metodologie, jež jsou diskutovány v závěrečné části. Další zásadní metodologický problém je metodologie literární historie. Kniha, která se dočkala už dvou dotisků, zároveň zvítězila v anketě historiků o knihu roku. Stejný autorský kolektiv pak připravuje na rok 2003 rozšířenou Ilustrovanou encyklopedii českých klášterů ve velkém formátu. Úvodní kapitoly seznamují čtenáře s různými druhy řeholního života a jeho dějinami v Čechách. Další jsou zaměřeny především na architektonický vývoj, který se způsobem řeholního života úzce souvisel. Proto jsou podoby a vývoj řeholních domů ilustrovány na pozadí jednotlivých řádů či kongregací, jejichž přehled obsahuje další kapitola. Základ encyklopedie však tvoří hesla všech lokalit vznikajících od uvedení prvních řeholních komunit do Čech až po josefínské reformy, doplněné ještě výběrově o část mladších domů z 19. a 20. století. Obsahuje na 340 hesel, které se týkají i dávno zaniklých komunit či jen pokusů o vytvoření takových společenstev. Každé heslo doplňuje soupis základní literatury týkající se příslušné lokality. Nezbytné odborné výrazy vysvětluje samostatný slovníček. Knížka obsahuje v závěru i podrobný seznam literatury, mapku s vyznačením příslušných lokalit a také rejstřík osobností, které se podílely na monastické architektuře. Text doplňuje na 400 ilustrací, zčásti dobové kresby, zčásti půdorysy nových archeologických výzkumů, přičemž platí, že i řada vyobrazení je zde publikována poprvé. První vydání této publikace se umístilo na 1.-2. místě ankety historiků časopisu Dějiny a současnost o nejlepší historickou knihu roku 1997.
