The History of England - Jane Austenová

Billed a history 'from the reign of Henry IV to Charles I by a partial, prejudiced and ignorant historian', The History of England pokes fun at the overly verbose and grand histories of Austen's day. Written when she was just fifteen, this is a comic tour de force that shows Austen's wit developing into the satirical prowess she is remembered for.

History Hit Story of England - History Hit & Dan Snow

From battlefields, cathedrals and museums to castles and stately homes, from the Lancastrians and Yorkists to the Roundheads, Royalists and an abundance of kings called Edward (and Henry!), the history of our island nation unravels its rich tapestry beneath our very feet - if only you know where to look.Take, for instance, the Tower of London, which housed a royal menagerie - featuring lions, an African elephant and even a polar bear - some three hundred years before it bore witness to Anne Boleyn''s final jest with her executioner. Or the Liverpool Docks, which in the 19th century handled a whopping 9% of global trade. Or, indeed, the atomic weapons base at Orford Ness, which was used to secretly test nuclear weapons during the most heated periods of the Cold War. . . You do not have to travel far for English history to spring into rich and vivid life.In their Story of England, historian Dan Snow and the History Hit team take us on a journey through thousands of years of unceasing drama. It''s a tale of invaders and immigrants and visitors and what they brought here. It''s a tale of how our ancestors overcame, co-operated and shaped this country to their liking, affecting our landscape, our character, our language, industries, laws, religions and settlements with each passing century. And, ultimately, it''s a tale of how England came to be how it is today.

Emma - Jane Austenová

With an Introduction and Notes by Dr Nicola Bradbury, University of Reading. Jane Austen teased readers with the idea of a 'heroine whom no one but myself will much like', but Emma is irresistible. 'Handsome, clever, and rich', Emma is also an 'imaginist', 'on fire with speculation and foresight'. She sees the signs of romance all around her, but thinks she will never be married. Her matchmaking maps out relationships that Jane Austen ironically tweaks into a clearer perspective. Judgement and imagination are matched in games the reader too can enjoy, and the end is a triumph of understanding.

Emma - Jane Austenová

V dobách, kdy ženy bývaly křehké květinky a mladé dívky často interesantně omdlévaly, vytvořila Jane Austenová ve své Emmě hrdinku z jiného kadlubu.

In the vein of Downton Abbey, Jane Austen's beloved but unfinished masterpiece-often considered her most modern and exciting novel-gets a spectacular second act in this tie-in to a major new limited television series. Written only months before Austen's death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the humorous, charming (and slightly wild!) Sidney Parker. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to the would-be coastal resort of the eponymous title, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make, and the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success. The History of the Hobbit - John D. Rateliff

In one volume for the first time, this revised and updated examination of how J.R.R.Tolkien came to write his original masterpiece The Hobbit includes his complete unpublished draft version of the story, together with notes and illustrations by Tolkien himself. The Hobbit was first published on 21 September 1937. Like its sequel, The Lord of the Rings, it is a story that ‘grew in the telling', and many characters and plot threads in the published text are quite different from the story J.R.R. Tolkien first wrote to read aloud to his young sons as one of their ‘fireside reads'. Together in one volume, The History of the Hobbit presents the complete text of the unpublished manuscript of The Hobbit, accompanied by John Rateliff's lively and informative account of how the book came to be written and published. Recording the numerous changes made to the story both before and after publication, he examines - chapter by chapter - why those changes were made and how they reflect Tolkien's ever-growing concept of Middle-earth. As well as reproducing the original version of one of the world's most popular novels - both on its own merits and as the foundation for The Lord of the Rings- this book includes many little-known illustrations and draft maps for The Hobbit by Tolkien himself. Also featured are extensive commentaries on the dates of composition, how Tolkien's professional and early mythological writings influenced the story, the imaginary geography he created, and how Tolkien came to revise the book years after publication to accommodate events in The Lord of the Rings. Endorsed by Christopher Tolkien as a companion to his essential 12-volume The History of Middle-earth, this thoughtful and exhaustive examination of one of the most treasured stories in English literature offers fascinating new insights for those who have grown up with this enchanting tale, and will delight any who are about to enter Bilbo's round door for the first time.

The History of African Art - Suzanne Preston Blier

A concise, accessible and up-to-date overview of the arts of Africa from prehistoric times to the present day. This indispensable introductory guide explores the art of the African continent from its early origins over 150,000 years ago to the contemporary, set in the context of post-colonial debates, the restitution of cultural objects and artefacts, and the challenges of the present. This enormous and complex field of study, once under-appreciated by the Western art world, is now of global importance and an essential subject of education in art history. For ease of reference and analysis, this indispensable guide is structured chronologically into manageable and meaningful chapters covering ancient art, the Middle Ages, travel and trade, encounters with Europe in the age of exploration, the colonial era, the rebuilding of the continent in recent times, and contemporary art. It addresses core, continent-wide themes in African visual and cultural expression, from the life-cycle (motherhood, children, initiation, religion) to the body and representations of power dynamics. Important regional artistic expressions are also explored, such as the cultures of Mali (the Western Sudan), Nigeria (the lower Niger and Benue area), the Congo Basin and various nomadic populations across the continent. Written from an inclusive modern perspective, focusing not only on royal traditions but also the broader global history of the continent and its artistic practices, this is an excellent introduction for students, museum visitors and anyone with an interest in fine art, African history and cultural studies.

Zmodernizovanou verzi látky předložili i američtí filmaři, kteří do role pletichářky obsadili Alicii Silverstoneovou. „Satira zabalená do dramatické romance se u Austenové plně vyrovná jak Pýše a předsudku, tak Rozumu a citu. Na snobsky pomýlené spasitelství ani lepšího léku není.“ – Vox. „Tak palčivé, a přitom lemované tolika delikátními žerty. Úžasný dobový vhled do duše nespolehlivé hrdinky inspiroval Brontëovou, Flaubert¬a, Prousta, Lawrence i další…“ – The Guardian.

Adultery is not a typical Jane Austen theme, but when it disturbs the relatively peaceful household at Mansfield Park, it has quite unexpected results. The diffident and much put-upon heroine Fanny Price has to struggle to cope with the results, re-examining her own feelings while enduring the cheerful amorality, old-fashioned indifference and priggish disapproval of those around her.

Hrdinky příběhu, upřímná, naivní mladičká Catherine a její mazaná přítelkyně Isabella, si toto své poslání zpestřují četbou strašidelných gotických románů a jejich rekvizity vidí na každém kroku. Tato situace nabízí Jane Austenové skvělou příležitost rozehrát svůj typický smysl pro humor a ironický vtip.

Northanger Abbey - Jane Austenová

While enjoying a six weeks' stay in fashionable Bath, the young and callow Catherine Morland is introduced to the delights of high society. Jane Austenová - Lucy Worsleyová

Nové a neotřelé vyprávění o životě Jane Austenové osvětluje, jak autorka žila, proč si zvolila svou cestu a jaké prostředí ji ovlivňovalo.

V mondénních anglických lázních Bath bývaly v době Jane Austenové mladé slečny uváděny do společnosti, aby se obrousily a pod dohledem matinek získaly žádoucí partii. Ačkoliv má hlavu popletenou hrůzostrašnými gotickými romány, tehdejší oblíbenou dívčí četbou, a často vidí i v úkazech zcela běžných romantické drama, nakonec jí bystrý rozum ukáže správnou cestu a s milou Catherine - jak jinak - všechno dopadne šťastně.

Northanger Abbey - Jane Austenová

This is the "Penguin English Library Edition" of "Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen. 'To look almost pretty, is an acquisition of higher delight to a girl who has been looking plain the first fifteen years of her life, than a beauty from her cradle can ever receive'. During an eventful season at Bath, young, naive Catherine Morland experiences the joys of fashionable society for the first time. She is delighted with her new acquaintances: flirtatious Isabella, who shares Catherine's love of Gothic romance and horror, and sophisticated Henry and Eleanor Tilney, who invite her to their father's mysterious house, Northanger Abbey. There, her imagination influenced by novels of sensation and intrigue, Catherine imagines terrible crimes committed by General Tilney. With its broad comedy and irrepressible heroine, this is the most youthful and optimistic of Jane Austen's works. "The Penguin English Library" - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

Northanger Abbey - Jane Austenová

Introduction and Notes by David Blair, University of Kent. Northanger Abbey tells the story of a young girl, Catherine Morland who leaves her sheltered, rural home to enter the busy, sophisticated world of Bath in the late 1790s. Austen observes with insight and humour the interaction between Catherine and the various characters whom she meets there, and tracks her growing understanding of the world about her. In this, her first full-length novel, Austen also fixes her sharp, ironic gaze on other kinds of contemporary novel, especially the Gothic school made famous by Ann Radcliffe. Catherine's reading becomes intertwined with her social and romantic adventures, adding to the uncertainties and embarrassments she must undergo before finding happiness.

Mansfield Park - Jane Austenová

Little treasures, the FLAME TREE COLLECTABLE CLASSICS are chosen to create a delightful and timeless home library. Each stunning, gift edition features deluxe cover treatments, ribbon markers, luxury endpapers and gilded edges. The unabridged text is accompanied by a Glossary of Victorian and Literary terms produced for the modern reader.Mansfield Park was written just after Pride and Prejudice, offering an opposite view of the world and bringing a very modern perspective on the relative merits of hard work vs inherited wealth. Fanny Price is a meek, downtrodden heroine who wins out in the end through sheer resourcefulness and good character. The book deals with slavery, love, betrayal, rivalry and meritocracy, highlighted by the mesmerising tension between The Crawford's metropolitan attitudes and the people of Mansfield Park who become enthralled by the illicit, seductive behaviour of their visitors.Probably Jane Austen's most ambitious novel, and worth reading again, and again for it's subtle layering of themes.

The History of Middle-Earth 03: Lays of Beleriand - J. R. R. Tolkien

The third volume that contains the early myths and legends which led to the writing of Tolkien's epic tale of war, The Silmarillion. This, the third volume of The History of Middle-earth, gives us a priviledged insight into the creation of the mythology of Middle-earth, through the alliterative verse tales of two of the most crucial stories in Tolkien's world -- those of Turien and Luthien. The first of the poems is the unpublished Lay of The Children of Hurin, narrating on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. The second is the moving Lay of Leithian, the chief source of the tale of Beren and Luthien in The Silmarillion, telling of the Quest of the Silmaril and the encounter with Morgoth in his subterranean fortress. Accompanying the poems are commentaries on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days. Also included is the notable criticism of The Lay of The Leithian by CS Lewis, who read the poem in 1929.
