A native of Pilsen Gottfried Lindauer was an artist with a remarkable life story whose work was left unacknowledged for a long period of time. While in the Czech Republic his work is known by only a small number of specialists, in New Zealand, where he moved from Pilsen in 1874, his paintings of the indigenous Maori people are considered a part of the national cultural heritage and Lindauer is one of the most popular painters of the colonial era there. Mnichovská Akademie umění si postupně vybudovala pověst nejprestižnějšího uměleckého učiliště ve střední Evropě. For the past ten years, London-based Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers Ltd. has been publishing a series titled Director's Choice presenting the world's major museums and galleries through the eyes of their respective directors. One of the 2019 additions to this edition is a selection by Roman Musil, Director of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, which introduces - in Czech and English versions - thirty-seven landmark works from the institution's extensive art collections. The book comprises works of art from the mid-fourteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The Gallery of West Bohemia has thus joined an exclusive club of world institutions such as the Albertina in Vienna, the National Gallery in London, the Alte and Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the Frick Collection in New York, or the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. In the same year as the publication of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, similar books were published for the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The collection of the fin de siécle art from the collections of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen is one of the best in the context of Czech public collections. Czech art at this time was in the process of integration into international structures and many artists from the Czech lands studied, exhibited or worked in the key cultural capitals of Europe, such as Vienna, Munich and Paris. Two personalities who achieved worldwide fame are represented in the Pilsen collection: one of the most important representatives of art nouveau, Alfons Mucha, and the later co-founder of abstract painting, František Kupka. Tato kniha je zaměřena na architekturu města Znojma v jejích kulturně-historických souvislostech. Skladba komorní délky zachycuje básníka neznalého lásky, jenž po dni stráveném nad latinskými spisy usíná neklidným spánkem. Ve snu se mu zjevuje římský vojevůdce Scipio Africanus, který se mu stává průvodcem a zavádí jej do alegorické zahrady, v níž "plodný květen vládne celý věk" a kde básník poprvé dostává příležitost poznat (byť jen jako svědek) lásku a její rituály zblízka. Ptačí sněm je ukázkou tzv. snového vidění, jednoho z nejoblíbenějších literárních žánrů vrcholného a pozdního středověku. O zdomácnění této formy se v anglickém prostředí nemalou měrou zasloužil právě Geoffrey Chaucer, a to jak překladem, tak vlastní tvorbou. Přestože datace i účel Ptačího sněmu jsou do značné míry spekulativní, mnohými historiky bývá báseň kladena do přímé souvislosti s námluvami mladého anglického krále Richarda II. a Annou Českou, dcerou římského císaře Karla IV., jíž vzdal Chaucer hold hned v několika svých skladbách. Zároveň se jedná o jeden z nejranějších dokladů spojení kultu svatého Valentýna s milostnou tematikou.
