The collection of the fin de siécle art from the collections of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen is one of the best in the context of Czech public collections. It includes all the important styles and trends that appeared on the art scene of the time, i.e. naturalism, symbolism, impressionism and art nouveau. Czech art at this time was in the process of integration into international structures and many artists from the Czech lands studied, exhibited or worked in the key cultural capitals of Europe, such as Vienna, Munich and Paris. Two personalities who achieved worldwide fame are represented in the Pilsen collection: one of the most important representatives of art nouveau, Alfons Mucha, and the later co-founder of abstract painting, František Kupka. For the past ten years, London-based Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers Ltd. has been publishing a series titled Director's Choice presenting the world's major museums and galleries through the eyes of their respective directors. One of the 2019 additions to this edition is a selection by Roman Musil, Director of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, which introduces - in Czech and English versions - thirty-seven landmark works from the institution's extensive art collections. The book comprises works of art from the mid-fourteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The Gallery of West Bohemia has thus joined an exclusive club of world institutions such as the Albertina in Vienna, the National Gallery in London, the Alte and Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the Frick Collection in New York, or the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. In the same year as the publication of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, similar books were published for the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. A native of Pilsen Gottfried Lindauer was an artist with a remarkable life story whose work was left unacknowledged for a long period of time. While in the Czech Republic his work is known by only a small number of specialists, in New Zealand, where he moved from Pilsen in 1874, his paintings of the indigenous Maori people are considered a part of the national cultural heritage and Lindauer is one of the most popular painters of the colonial era there. In Beyond the Avant Garde, scholars from Czechia, Canada, Germany, and Hungary take a new approach to exploring the work of one of Central Europe’s most interesting modernist painters -- Bohumil Kubišta. While many art historians have consigned Kubišta’s work into an idealized Czech canon, Kubišta did not identify with a nation state clearly defined by ethnicity, language, and territorial reach. Although born and raised in the Czech lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he traveled widely, maintained important international contacts, and served as a successful artillery officer in Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. Taking a transnational approach that incorporates thorough topographical research, the authors of Beyond the Avant-Garde: Bohumil Kubišta and European Modern Art attempt to redraw the current map of European modernism by exploring the artist’s subversive approach to the stylistic currents of his time. The mummies were examined using non-invasive methods, and the results were compared to those published in the past.The containers, two boxes, two hampers, and two jars represent only a small part of typological repertoire of containers used for the deposition of burials of non-adult individuals.While the non-adult mummies and their isolated parts are without provenience, all of the six containers come from modern excavations at well-documented cemeteries at Deir el-Medina and Abusir. Examination by non-invasive methods, especially computed tomography, brought to light several findings including one possible case of traumatic death, and one possible case of rickets. Na základě kvalitativní analýzy biografických rozhovorů s přistěhovalci z Běloruska, Ukrajiny a Ruska žijících v České republice autorka zjišťuje, jak se utvářejí symbolické hranice přináležení skrze stigma v každodenních interakcích v sociálním a kulturním kontextu imigrace. Kniha si všímá rozporuplné kulturní reprezentace této skupiny migrantů v českém prostoru etnizovaných vztahů – zvláštního napětí mezi pozicí ‚Druhého‘ (‚Other) a ‚Bratra‘ (‚Brother‘) ve vztahu k Čechům. Toto napětí odráží minulé i současné procesy vytváření národa ve střední a východní Evropě, historické politické vztahy mezi socialistickým Československem a Sovětským svazem a migrační procesy v období po roce 1989. Based on period documents and photography, the book maps in detail the development of Czech non-university sciences from the 18th century when the Society of Unknown Scholars in the Austrian Lands was founded in Olomouc. The main attention is focused on the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and its most important precursors, whether the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, active in 1953-1992, or earlier institutions, such as the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts (originally the Emperor Franz Joseph Czech Academy for Sciences, Literature and Arts), founded in 1890, or the Royal Bohemian Society of Learning, which existed already from the 18th century. Individual chapters are devoted also to Masaryk Academy of Labour and the main scientific institutions of the Germans living in the Czech lands - Gesellschaft zur Förderung Deutscher Wissenschaft, Kunst und Literatur in Böhmen (Society for the Support of German Sciences, Arts and Literature in Bohemia). Attention is, however, also devoted to our most important scientists with whose research results as well as the milieu in which they worked and work the reader is acquainted with through archival and contemporary sources.
