Lawlerova kniha je vyprovokována obtíží, kterou bolestně pociťuje řada lidí: papež František se pro ně stal obtížně srozumitelným. V úvodu knihy autor říká, že z počátku papeži velmi fandil a radoval se z něj. Postupně ale problémy narůstaly a knihu vlastně napsal pro ty, kteří podobně jako on zůstávají v nejistotě a v rozpacích. V knize Ztracení, jež pojednává o zrůstu a pádu katolicismu v Bostonské diecézi a českému čtenáři je dobře známa, se Lawler ukázal jako dobrý novinář, kterému jde o fakta a je umírněný v ideologickém hodnocení a nálepkování. Proto stojí za to věnovat pozornost i této knize. Pokud totiž nezastáváme zcestnou tezi, že o současném pontifikátu se nesmí říci nic kritického. Pak tedy musíme uvítat kultivovanou a neemotivní podobu Lawlerova textu, který mapuje slova a události, dává je do souvislosti a do kontextu, ale nenutí čtenáře, aby přijal nějaké prefabrikované rozhodnutí či zaujal nějaký žádoucí postoj. Nechává na čtenáři, aby si věc promyslel a udělal si názor sám.
