Zveřejnění Lutherových 95 tezí nebylo prvním reformačním krokem středověku. Kořen reformace začal růst mnohem dříve – za Jana Viklefa v Anglii či Jana Husa v Čechách. Martin Luther se ve skutečnosti původně nehodlal pouštět do celkové reformace církve. Neusiloval o získání vlivu, nechtěl se stát známou osobností, nepřál si zakládat novou církev či sbory. Události ale brzy nabraly jiný směr a Luther, poslušen Božího vedení, zdvihl pochodeň svých předků, aby z jejího světla rozdmýchal oheň, který pročistil celou tehdejší Evropu.
