V přednáškách z konce první světové války Rudolf Steiner odhaluje duchovní pozadí historických událostí a krizí moderní doby. Vysvětluje, že od roku 1879 působí na lidské myšlení tzv. duchové temnoty - zaostalé andělské bytosti, které po porážce v bitvě s archandělem Michaelem byly svrženy z duchovních světů na Zemi. Jejich vliv lze podle Steinera vnímat v materialismu, jednostranném intelektualismu i v pokusech o budování utopických společenských řádů. Steiner zároveň ukazuje, že lidé mají možnost vědomě se rozhodnout spolupracovat s duchy světla, kteří otevírají cestu k osvobození od pout rasy, národa a krve. Zajímavé jsou Steinerovy postřehy k osobnostem, které podle něj formovaly epochu: od mystiků J. V. Andreae, V. Solovjova či Saint-Martina přes politické lídry jako Woodrow Wilson a David Lloyd George až po Goetha a Darwina. Publikace odkrývá napětí mezi intelektuálním a morálním vývojem lidstva, upozorňuje na nebezpečí "umrtvování živého myšlení" a objasňuje úlohu andělských a archandělských bytostí v lidském organismu i v dějinách.
