Lévi-Strauss, Saint-John Perse), takže přirozeným základem jeho polyglotství i komparatistického myšlení zůstane spojení středoevropského humanismu s francouzským univerzalismem. Vedle toho v New Yorku také přistupuje k bar micva a osobně tak za další východisko svého myšlení přijímá židovství. Studuje na univerzitě v Chicagu (B. A. 1948), na Harvardu (M. A. 1950) a v Oxfordu (PhD. 1955). Ve své první knize Tolstoj, nebo Dostojevskij (Tolstoy or Dostoevsky: An Essay in the Old Criticism, 1959) staví Steiner proti Tolstého dějinnému humanismu Dostojevského naddějinnou přesažnost a vyzvedá pochopení tohoto autora pro temné stránky a tragičnost člověka. V následující Smrti tragédie (The Death of Tragedy, 1961) konstatuje zánik tohoto jedinečného západního žánru, podkopaného osvícenským sekulárním optimismem a demokratizací společnosti. Hugo Steiner (1880, Praha - 1945, New York) byl jedním z nejvýznamnějších česko-německých knižních tvůrců 20. století židovského původu, jehož dílo je z velké části spjaté s Čechy. V roce 1900 odchází z Prahy do Mnichova, v roce 1933 se do ní z antisemitských důvodů vrací, aby ji v roce 1938 ze stejných důvodů, již definitivně opustil. I v době pobytu v Německu si v Praze držel ateliér. Steinerův přínos nespočívá jenom v jeho samostatné vynikající výtvarné tvorbě, ale patří k němu též jeho inovátorský přístup týkající se knižních vazeb, propagace knihy i významné pedagogické činnosti. Je až neuvěřitelné kolik prací stihl za svůj život vytvořit a kolika oborům se věnoval. Zdrcující skutečností je, že velká část jeho práce z německého období byla zničena. Po válce byl odsunut na okraj zájmu i společnosti, protože jeho výstavní a organizační práce byly spojeny s Lipskem a s Berlínskými nakladatelskými domy a pro nově vzniklou NDR bylo Steinerovo jméno, jako zásadního antikomunisty, nepřijatelné připomínat. Pro řadu Němců zase svým přízviskem Prag patřil do Čech. V Čechách vadil ze stejného důvodu jako v NDR a zároveň svou německou příslušností. Hugo Steiner-Prag změnil knižní svět jako úpravce, ilustrátor, tiskař a propagátor knižní tvorby. Největší část svého profesního života strávil (33 let) v Německu, ale svou tvorbou zůstal spjatý s Prahou. Nejen cykly ilustrací ke Golemovi, ale i ilustracemi ke knihám Paula Leppina či albem Finis Prag. Po své nucené emigraci založil v Praze soukromou školu Officina Pragensis, jejíž žáci udávali směr české knižní úpravy a ilustrace 60. let. Monografie je splátkou letitého dluhu významnému autorovi, jehož dílo bylo v Čechách, přes jeho úzkou vazbu k Praze a zásadní zásluhy o rozkvět české kultury, téměř zapomenuto.
